Background / History
Ai’s home village was devastated by a Rampage combined with unusually heavy rain. An Almudron directed floodwaters through its defenses, scattering the inhabitants and killing many hunters and Palicoes. A Zinogre separated Ai from the main group; while fleeing, she encountered scavenging Great Jaggis. Just before they caught her, she heard a voice offering to save her life and subsequently appeared before Xie Wen’s group 160.
Upon joining the Palico Research Commission, Ai accepted her new circumstances with weary resignation. She cooperated with assigned work and read the medical books Xie Wen provided, but otherwise avoided conversation and slept alone. Klee Meow’s persistent companionship and Hua Mei Meow’s affection gradually helped her engage with the crew 139 140 141.
Her early insecurity centered on feeling unnecessary: the crew rarely needed medical treatment, leaving her anxious about her usefulness despite knowing Xie Wen would not abandon her. Treating patients in the Sorbet Kingdom and helping cure Bonney gave her a clear place within the Commission. As she became more secure, her guarded behavior increasingly gave way to teasing and elaborate mischief 169 170 186 187.
Appearance
Ai is a small, shorthaired kitten with blue eyes and brown hair, introduced wearing a white laboratory coat 139 162.
- Breed: Xie Wen considers her an ordinary domestic cat, though her head and ears remind him of a British Shorthair; he does not identify her breed conclusively 139.
- Medical attire: Wears a white coat and glasses while reporting on Bonney’s condition 173.
- Raid Suit: Uses a brown “Almudron set” during the Punk Hazard expedition 374.
- Defensive posture: When uncomfortable in Xie Wen’s arms, initially curls into a ball with her limbs tucked in and her tail held tightly against herself 141.
Personality
Ai is cautious, sensitive, and inclined to pessimism, particularly when danger or separation is involved. She questions unnecessarily hazardous routes and initially struggles to trust the crew’s unconventional methods. Her prickliness serves partly as protection in unfamiliar surroundings rather than simple dislike of others 140 142 169 187.
She habitually denies enjoying affection even while purring, leaning into a hand, or clinging to Xie Wen. Embarrassment often prompts a sharp retort, bite, or scratch. This defensiveness persists long after she becomes comfortable riding on his shoulder 141 155 723.
Once settled into the Commission, Ai becomes an inventive schemer. She exploits distractions, prepares plausible excuses, and collaborates with Klee on pranks—including a Tearshroom drink that makes Xie Wen cry uncontrollably. Her research obsession also leads her to dodge training, although Hua Mei Meow rarely lets her succeed 175 205 508.
Her curiosity has ethical limits. She avoids testing a theory about slave-brand concealment when failure could renew the victims’ fear, and refuses to create intelligent clones because she considers it toying with life. She also objects when rescued slaves volunteer as experimental subjects out of gratitude 509 758.
Abilities & Skills
Medicine and Clinical Care
Ai combines healing-Palico aptitude with continuing study of the new world’s medicine 139 140 170.
- Wins the confidence of Sorbet Kingdom patients and doctors through diagnosis, dietary advice, and medical discussion 170.
- Serves as Bonney’s attending physician; Bonney later credits Ai and Law with restoring her health 183 528.
- Evaluates Whitebeard’s severe aging realistically: ordinary treatment can prolong his life but cannot restore youth 673.
- Teaches Marco Kureha’s health-maintenance methods after Whitebeard rejects rejuvenation and cloning 673.
- Provides frontline care at Marineford because she cannot treat allies promptly from too far away 771.
Pharmaceutical Development
Ai specializes in medicines that heal, enhance, incapacitate, or poison, often combining several effects in one combat-support system 258 408 444.
- Potion-1306: Heals Wiper’s wounds but leaves him contorting and unresponsive; afterward, recalling the experience visibly frightens him 256 257.
- Enhancement medicines: Uses Demondrug, Armorskin, and Dash Juice to improve allies’ combat performance 444.
- Debuffs: Applies paralysis, sleep, poison, and experimental mixtures against opponents 444.
- Utility preparations: Makes gas masks, a deodorizer with a faint catnip scent, and Tearshroom extract capable of inducing uncontrollable crying 226 302 508.
- Liberation Potion: Develops an injectable treatment intended to free Reiju from Judge’s Factor Chain 784.
- Limit: Her existing potions do not work on Moria’s animated corpses, an interaction she had failed to anticipate 285.
Bioengineering and Devil Fruit Research
Ai’s principal research interests are bioengineering and pharmaceuticals, contrasting with Meowrah’s stronger focus on mechanical inventions 258.
- Steals Germa’s lineage-factor, genetic-modification, and Raid Suit research by photographing laboratory records 205 206.
- Converts Caesar’s poison gas into Sherry’s nontoxic universal stock solution, which can blend with different medicines 474.
- Creates medicine- and powder-based creatures using Zoan Devil Fruits 473 475 714.
- Possesses an extensive collection of Paramecia lineage factors and green-blood technology. Recipients of a blood replacement would subsequently require matching green blood for transfusions 758.
- Can technically create intelligent clones, including Seraphim-like beings, but refuses on ethical grounds 758.
- Cannot use Seastone or Poneglyph shavings as bodies for Devil Fruit abilities; uses strengthened alloy powder instead 474.
Equipment Engineering
Ai reverse-engineers imported technology and adapts it to the Commission’s needs 208 209 210.
- Raid Suits: Adds jet propulsion and reinforces resistance to flames, heat, sound waves, and explosive impacts. Klee’s suit uses thermal energy and flames, amplifies fire, and briefly protects her from full seawater immersion 210.
- Insect Glaive: Studies and rebuilds Xie Wen’s weapon; its charged pneumatic system can operate continuously for roughly ten days 208 210.
- Katydid Bracer: Creates the Wirebug substitute designated 0311, later named Dudusi by Klee. It supports grappling and adapted Silkbind techniques and can be upgraded without another Wirebug-type Devil Fruit 354.
- Detector Dial: Modifies a Tone Dial into a detector used with a collected poison-gas sample; its alert consists of recordings of her own meows 374.
- Collaborative work: Helps Meowrah make Kyros a prosthetic leg and studies Shirahoshi’s Sea King communication and Dudu’s Klabautermann form 345 431 554.
Haki and Physical Techniques
- Observation Haki: Particularly sensitive to spies. Alerts her to Stussy and to the similar impression given by Lucci and Kaku; she also notices the Sorbet doctors’ concealed purpose 147 152 170 426.
- Armament Haki: Can reinforce her scratching attacks enough to hurt Xie Wen 743.
- Mink Tribe Mode: Generates electricity through fur friction, adding electrical attacks and stimulating muscles to increase speed 162.
- Limit: Her personal fighting strength is comparatively low. Against Inuarashi, her effectiveness comes from supporting Jinx and layering debilitating medicines rather than matching him physically 444.
Covert Communication and Planning
- Invents Palico Morse code, using facial expressions and body movements to communicate secretly with Klee 207.
- Plans the Germa theft around Klee’s disruptions and luck, while presenting herself as the better-behaved kitten to reduce Hua Mei Meow’s scrutiny 204 205.
- Recognizes political risks when they might interfere with important medical exchanges, including the Drum Kingdom’s control over its doctors 514.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spatial Pouch / Backpack — Carries medicines, research tools, a compact cat-head camera, masks, and other supplies. Stores most of Jean’s metal-powder body when it is not needed 205 226 475.
- Gas masks — Originally made alongside self-defense poison gas bombs; later distributed against Nanohana’s overpowering perfume. Ai retires the bombs after acquiring Germa technology 226.
- Seastone-fitted glove — Used to restrain Vodka after it damages her Weather Garden 714.
- Sea-bream-shaped pistol — Drawn against attackers concealed among Sabaody’s mangrove roots 302.
- Flared-muzzle gun — Fires a pellet that collapses a powder-bodied bird and subsequently retrieves a barrier-enclosed white sphere 751.
Elemental Beasts and Medicine Aggregates
| Creation | Composition / Form | Uses and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Sherry | Axolotl-shaped universal medicinal solution derived from Caesar’s poison gas | Carries interchangeable healing, enhancement, sleep, poison, and experimental mixtures. Can become mist or condense herself; her underlying stock solution cannot currently be changed further 408 474. |
| Vermouth | Translucent, silvery-white Healing Potion White Bat; designation 2511 | Can self-regulate medicinal properties and is large enough for Ai to ride, but is less versatile than Sherry 473 474 729 771. |
| Jean | Metal Panther made from strengthened alloy powder and the Tiger-Tiger Fruit | Dedicated fighter and mount. Normally kept around large-dog size; cannot switch between gas and liquid or freely alter size like Sherry and Vermouth 474 475 729. |
| Vodka | Reddish husky made from Demon Drug and the Husky-Dog Fruit | Uses Ai’s modified drug as its core. Its destructive behavior includes digging up her Weather Garden 714 729. |
- Shared vulnerability: Contact with Seastone returns the creatures to their original material forms. Cat Princess exploits this to drench Ai in the medicines carried by Sherry and Vermouth 729.
Relationships
- Xie Wen — Leader, protector, frequent test subject, and favorite target of teasing. He helps her feel valued; she grows comfortable seeking his affection while continuing to deny it 141 169 187 454 723.
- Klee Meow — Closest young companion and frequent partner in mischief. Klee’s affection helps break through Ai’s isolation; they later coordinate the Germa theft and Tearshroom prank 139 141 205 508.
- Hua Mei Meow — Protective elder-sister figure and strict training supervisor. Ai accepts her grooming and reassurance but cannot reliably escape her exercise requirements 140 141 162 175.
- Meowrah — Fellow researcher and regular collaborator on medical equipment, unusual life-forms, and new technologies 258 345 431 554.
- Bonney — Patient and friend whose treatment helps Ai overcome her fear of being useless to the Commission 186 528.
- Reiju — The motivation behind Ai’s investigation of Germa’s control mechanisms; eventually receives her Liberation Potion 205 207 784.
- Whitebeard — Patient whose condition Ai manages without promising an impossible cure. She accompanies his forces to Marineford as his attending physician 673 771.
- Stussy — Distrusted from their early encounters. Ai’s spy-sensitive Observation Haki contributes to her refusal to engage when Stussy probes for research information 147 426.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Sorbet Kingdom and Bonney’s treatment: Demonstrates her medical ability at a free clinic, examines Bonney’s Azure Jade Scale Disease, and prioritizes working with Law over the other cats’ proposed sparring 170 173 183.
- Germa technology theft: Obtains the research needed for independent equipment production while seeking a way to free Reiju from Judge’s control 205 206 207.
- Sky Island: Tests Potion-1306 on Wiper and investigates the potential applications of Dials. Later refuses the lightning Devil Fruit because she hates lightning and believes a combat specialist would benefit more 256 258 270.
- Punk Hazard and subsequent research: Helps investigate poison gas and Smiley. Assimilating the island’s research later advances several stalled projects and her growing force of artificial creatures 374 375 475.
- Zou: Demonstrates the effectiveness of pharmaceutical support against Inuarashi and openly explains that the crew are Palicoes rather than Cat Minks 443 444 450.
- Medical exchanges: Visits Drum Island to meet its doctors, obtains medicines and cultivation methods from the Tontatta, and secures Shiki’s offer of access to IQ plants and research materials 517 554 583.
- Revolutionary Army research: Explains green-blood replacement risks and rejects indebted former slaves’ offers to become test subjects. Sabo volunteers to be the first recipient, but the procedure is not performed immediately 758 759.
- Marineford: Remains aboard the Moby Dick as a healer, protected by Whitebeard’s crew and her “Black Organization Squad” 771.
- Reiju reunion: Delivers the Liberation Potion. Reiju injects it but chooses to remain with her family and the Charlotte Family rather than leave them 784.
Notable Quotes
“Even a Healing Palico has to take part in battles!” 285
“If it were beasts without much intelligence, that would be one thing, but creating intelligent beings would make me feel like I was toying with life, meow. How would that be any different from those awful Celestial Dragons or those guys from Germa?” 758
Trivia
- Chooses “Cat’s Brain” herself after rejecting Xie Wen’s proposed nickname, “Doraemon,” because she thinks it better represents her intelligence 403.
- Her refusal to learn Mink Tribe Mode initially appears trauma-related, but the crew concludes that her actual objection is fear of static electricity 162.
- Enjoys fashion magazines while dismissing the other cats’ antics as childish 238.
- Shiki underestimates her partly because she has the Commission’s lowest bounty and appears too young to possess advanced medical knowledge 583.
