Background / History

Youth and disillusionment

Kaido originally yearned for peace and did not particularly enjoy meaningless fighting. Betrayal by the king he served, followed by Kurozumi Higurashi’s influence, helped turn him toward a worldview in which the strong preyed upon the weak 452 790.

He served under Rocks before becoming one of the Four Emperors. At God Valley, he encountered Saint Saturn, whom he later recognized during the fighting at Egghead 558 707.

Captivity and Vegapunk

Kaido was captured and subjected to research at Punk Hazard. Vegapunk used his Lineage Factor to reproduce the Azure Dragon Fruit’s abilities in an artificial fruit, which Xie Wen eventually obtained and gave to Kaido Meow 608 648.

Kaido subsequently attempted several raids on Punk Hazard to abduct Vegapunk. These failed because the scientist either hid beforehand or was protected by Marines and CP agents. Kaido instead recruited Queen, another former MADS scientist 648.

Occupation of Wano Country

Kaido and Kurozumi Orochi exploited Kozuki Oden’s misplaced trust and failure to seek assistance to take over Wano Country. Kaido initially wanted information about the One Piece and Oden’s ability to translate Poneglyphs; after Oden’s death, he used Wano as an industrial base to strengthen his forces 445 645.

Wano’s arms business also involved cooperation with the World Government. Queen designed many of the weapons manufactured there, making him particularly valuable to Kaido’s operation 580 646.

Appearance

• Human form: Has a pair of oni horns and a beard; wears clothing that resembles Kaido Meow’s Japanese-style outfit and carries a spiked club 452 454 493 816.
• Azure Dragon Form: An enormous blue dragon capable of flying through the clouds 371 646.
• Human-Beast Form: A half-human, half-dragon combat form in which he continues wielding a kanabō 647 695.
• Missing horn: Loses one horn during the Research Commission’s attack in Wano. Xie Wen later uses it as material for Beasts’ Oni Horn: Sever 667 787.

Personality

Kaido treats strength as the foundation of authority. He considers death through weakness natural, regards ordinary soldiers as replaceable, and repeatedly tries to recruit powerful opponents. Nevertheless, he has genuine affection for trusted senior officers and reacts strongly to Queen’s death 554 646 649.

His drunkenness produces abrupt shifts between grief, rage, suicidal declarations, and destructive rampages. These episodes are familiar enough that his subordinates routinely flee and clean up afterward. Beneath that volatility, he remains calculating: he avoids unnecessary war with Whitebeard and Red-Hair, protects profitable business arrangements, and ultimately accepts limits on his rule rather than risk another confrontation with the cats 371 554 580 816.

Despite his brutal ambitions, Kaido retains a private hope for a savior. King’s account of Joy Boy interests him, but he insists that anyone worthy of that name must at least be able to defeat him. He comes to regard Xie Wen as Joy Boy because of his unusual concern for others and the joyful life he shares with his companions 790 816.

Physical Strength, Durability, and Endurance

Kaido’s naturally tough body and immense stamina make him exceptionally difficult to injure, even before he uses his Devil Fruit transformations 394.

• Xie Wen’s prepared attack only barely penetrates his defenses; Meow Jūshirō and Suika Meow initially fail to wound him 394.
• He overwhelms Vergo’s combined Armament Haki and Iron Body with a Thunder Bagua 393.
• His unarmed strikes remain formidable after Hassaikai is shrunk 397.

Kaido’s apparently straightforward attacks are the product of years of combat experience. Even Yamato learns only a handful despite enduring his attacks throughout childhood and adulthood 647.

• Hassaikai: His original spiked kanabō. Suika Meow shrinks it to approximately the size of his palm, depriving him of its normal reach 371 394.
• Receive the Eight Precepts: A newly forged kanabō used during the Wano battle and his later rematch with Xie Wen 647 653 787.
• Drinking gourd: Carries liquor and continues drinking during negotiations over the Four Seas Alliance 816.

Relationships

• Yamato — His child and a determined opponent of his rule. Kaido places explosive shackles on Yamato at eight years old and confines him in a cave without adequate food. Yamato rejects him after discovering the shackles were genuinely lethal; Kaido eventually entrusts Yamato to Xie Wen 636 816.
• Xie Wen — Initially a recruitment target, later an enemy whose attacks cost him Wano and a horn. Kaido eventually accepts his political terms and continues identifying him as Joy Boy despite his denials 394 646 667 816.
• Kaido Meow — His otherworldly counterpart and rival. Kaido first dismisses him as an imitation, then offers him the vice-captaincy. Their eventual five-day draw leads Kaido to recognize his right to the name 646 649 816.

• Monkey D. Dragon — Negotiates with him over Uranus and later secures his agreement to the Four Seas Alliance’s restrictions 782 816.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Robin Pursuit and the First Clash

While Kaido is absent on a drunken flight, King orders Jack to capture Nico Robin alive or kill her if capture proves impossible. Kaido later arrives near G-5, sees his injured followers, mistakenly blames the Marines, and attacks the base and Vergo 371 393.

Xie Wen and the cats coordinate attacks to create an escape opening. Suika Meow shrinks Hassaikai, while Shalmeow’s lightning and Dudu Golden Lion knock Kaido out of the air. Kaido nevertheless continues pursuing Xie Wen and Sanji Meow underwater for a day and a night before they escape 394 397 398.

Expulsion from Wano

Xie Wen visits Wano primarily to retaliate for the pursuit and let Kaido Meow challenge his counterpart—not because he expects to destroy the Beasts Pirates outright. Kaido is initially away chasing Issho, giving the Research Commission an opportunity to attack Onigashima 629 631.

After learning of Queen’s death, Kaido returns intent on killing Xie Wen. Kaido Meow takes over the fight, matching his dragon powers and signature techniques. Kaido repeatedly attempts to recruit him, but their disagreement over Yamato’s treatment deepens the hostility 646 647 649 652.

When Kaido Meow approaches exhaustion, the Research Commission covers his retreat and launches a coordinated assault. The cats’ bomb destroys part of Ringo, blows off one of Kaido’s horns, and forces his withdrawal. Searches find no body, and the Beasts Pirates retreat from Wano 654 656 657 667.

Hachinosu and the Search for Vegapunk

Kaido takes over Hachinosu, where Ochoku submits with little resistance. Absorbing Ochoku’s followers increases the Beasts Pirates’ strength despite their losses in Wano 661.

The exposure of Kaido Meow’s artificial fruit renews interest in Vegapunk. Kaido and Big Mom divide targets among Marine bases as they search for the scientist 679.

At Egghead, they exploit a temporary barrier failure to attack the Research Layer. When Saint Saturn and Saint Mars arrive, the two pirates strike them with Hakai, only to discover their extraordinary regeneration. A later report states that Sengoku blunts their third assault on the island 706 707 748.

Uranus Negotiations and Xie Wen’s Rematch

After Uranus wipes out most of his subordinates, Kaido attends negotiations with Xie Wen, Dragon, and Big Mom. He proposes representative one-on-one fights to determine leadership of their alliance and the Ancient Weapon’s fate 782 786.

In his rematch with Xie Wen, Kaido immediately recognizes his missing horn in Beasts’ Oni Horn: Sever. Xie Wen can now withstand his blows more directly and evade his barrages using new equipment and Monster Hunter techniques 787 788.

Their subsequent discussion reveals Kaido’s conviction that Xie Wen is Joy Boy. Learning that Joy Boy was a Devil Fruit user briefly disappoints him, but the revelation that the Nika fruit possesses its own will revives his interest 790.

The Four Seas Alliance

After the World Government falls, Kaido agrees to retain his existing territories without plundering civilians or expanding further. He openly admits that another feline bomb could cost him his remaining horn and says he wants to see how Xie Wen will bring laughter to the world 816.

He then resumes his interrupted contest with Kaido Meow. After five days without a victor, he recognizes his counterpart as worthy of the name Kaido and leaves Yamato in Xie Wen’s care 816.

• Kaido believes Kaido Meow’s elemental weapon must be Vegapunk’s technology. This misunderstanding strengthens his determination to abduct the scientist 649 653.
• The narration clarifies that “Strongest Creature on Land, Sea, and Air” describes his reputation across all creatures in one-on-one combat; the title itself is not proof of swimming ability. His underwater pursuit establishes that ability separately in this novel 397 398.
