Background / History

Early life

Lu Mingfei grew up with his uncle and aunt while his parents were absent. Both parents were once prominent S-Ranks, but Cassell’s trustees describe them as having been unheard from for nearly a decade. His aunt mistreated him, and his school record was marked by poor grades, internet-café visits, and an unrequited crush on Chen Wenwen 58.

His reputation at Shilan High School worsened after a seventh-grade fight over classmates mocking his absent parents. When the school summoned the families, his uncle apologized while his aunt forced Lu Mingfei to admit fault. Xia Mi also knew him during his school years, when she worked at an internet café he regularly visited 142 167 170.

Life in the EVA world

After crossing into another world, Lu Mingfei initially mistook the experience for a dream and then imagined himself its protagonist. Learning that people around him had lost their families and never experienced ordinary things such as natural meat, changing seasons, or snowfall dispelled that excitement 147.

He worked in NERV logistics, where repeated losses turned him into a veteran responsible for newcomers and the unfinished wishes of dead colleagues. He lived with Misato and the others, handled household money, and was eventually selected by the Marduk Agency as the Fourth Children to pilot Unit-03 9 54 70.

Unit-03’s parasitism and destruction left him unconscious and undergoing Angelification. Ritsuko’s team developed a suppression collar after others persuaded Gendo Ikari to postpone his execution. Lu Mingfei later learned that Ritsuko’s original collar had not included the explosive function he feared 95.

His memories include Asuka dying in his arms, Rei’s self-sacrifice, and people dissolving into LCL. By the time he returned, he believed that everyone he had known had died and that their world had vanished 5 17 54 92.

Return to his original world

Lu Mingfei returned to his nearly eighteen-year-old life with the memories and habits of a war survivor. Familiar classmates became difficult to recognize, loud noises triggered defensive reactions, and ordinary errands felt disorienting. His former feelings for Chen Wenwen no longer carried their old emotional weight 2 3 6.

Initially unwilling to enter another dangerous institution, he nevertheless investigated Cassell and Lake Ashi for signs of a threat. Nono’s companionship in Hakone helped him enjoy peaceful surroundings again. After telling her about his lost world, he accepted the possibility that his companions might exist safely elsewhere and agreed to attend Cassell 6 9 17.

Appearance

• Delicate features and melancholy eyes: Susie describes him as gentle-looking despite his overwhelming combat strength 73.
• Pale complexion: Nono comments on his pallor and urges him to spend more time outside 65.
• Increasingly perfected physique: Caesar finds his body virtually flawless; Lu Mingfei suspects this is a passive consequence of Angelification rather than exercise 110.
• Changed impression in formalwear: His fitted black suit and upright bearing astonish Xia Mi, although his crooked bow tie still needs adjusting 170.

Personality

Lu Mingfei’s experience of war leaves him watchful, world-weary, and detached from ordinary student life. He instinctively assesses people’s combat readiness and distrusts unsolicited kindness because his former world taught him to expect an agenda. Although he can connect with comrades in danger, he struggles to initiate friendships with students in peaceful surroundings 6 31 66.

His gentleness coexists with decisive violence. He comforts Su Xiaoqiang after her humiliation, carefully avoids hurting others in daily interactions, and places himself between danger and the people around him. In battle, however, he focuses on survival rather than heroic sentiment: when Angers asks what he thought while killing a dragon, his answer is simply how to kill it before it killed him 10 56 73.

He repeatedly neglects his own needs. Zero observes that, without supervision, he looks capable of wasting away in a ruin; he forgets meals and withdraws into his dormitory. His reduced appetite eventually proves partly physiological, but his isolation remains something his friends actively challenge 39 66 67 138.

Romantic attention easily flusters him. He initially fails to recognize Zero’s courtship or Nono’s interest, despite understanding battlefield threats immediately. Even after acknowledging his relationship with Zero, he remains uncertain about his feelings toward Nono and worries about respecting her relationship with Caesar 28 30 69.

A.T. Field / Absolute Domain

An ability brought back from the EVA world, initially treated by Cassell as an unidentified Word Spirit. Lu Mingfei names it Absolute Domain when explaining it to Angers; Lu Mingze later clarifies that the A.T. Field is not his actual Word Spirit 56 94.

High-Energy Attacks

• Ramiel-inspired cannon: Arranges A.T. Field panels into a rotating lens array to imitate the Fifth Angel’s high-energy attack without possessing Ramiel’s energy core. The attack kills the Bronze City’s Third-Generation guardian but leaves Lu Mingfei unconscious 52 56.
• Cross-shaped eye beams: Uses a standard Angel attack against Norton and Samson. Less powerful than the Ramiel imitation, it offers low consumption, rapid firing, and aim directed by his gaze 119.

Angelification

His transformation continues after the removal of the DSS collar 95.

• Reduced metabolic needs: Progressively requires less food; he later describes eating and drinking as habits rather than necessities 94 138.
• Physical refinement: Attributes his altered physique to passive changes from Angelification 110.
• Underwater endurance: Swims for ten minutes without taking a breath and places first in Cassell’s diving test 110.

Lu Mingze identifies Lu Mingfei’s innate Authority as Life, distinct from his A.T. Field 96.

• Changed cost: Lu Mingze’s abandoned plan charged a quarter of Lu Mingfei’s life per use; his greatly increased vitality now allows free use 96.
• Body creation: His LCL blood can provide material for new bodies. Lu Mingze explains that such Lilin bodies would be maintained by A.T. Fields under Lu Mingfei’s control 96.
