Background and History

Childhood ambition and work in Mondstadt

Sucrose’s childhood dream is to create a wonderland inhabited by fantastical creatures, including beings such as pegasi. She studies Biological Alchemy to make that dream possible, initially working with ordinary species because she lacks the knowledge and materials needed to create entirely new creatures 184.

As an alchemist of the Knights of Favonius, she also improves crops for practical use. The Knights provide her with research funding and a fully equipped laboratory; crop improvement is one of her duties rather than merely a personal interest 278 282.

Partnership with Li Qiuzhi

Sucrose meets Li Qiuzhi after he offers a shattered Stonehide Lawachurl bone mask in exchange for Elemental Potions. Their first material-gathering expedition takes them to Windwail Highland, where Amber helps them locate the plants and ores they need. After completing the potions, Sucrose establishes an ongoing exchange: fresh monster bones and rare research materials in return for more potions 65 66 71 72 74.

She later commissions Li Qiuzhi to accompany her to the Whispering Woods for Blooming Mushrooms. The expedition yields a Windbell Bird Egg and Lawachurl bone as additional research specimens. On their return, she pays him 50,000 Mora and gives him a wallet she embroidered herself, marking her growing personal attachment to him 180 184 189.

Romance and Wonderland

During a later laboratory visit, Li Qiuzhi obtains permission to touch Sucrose’s ears briefly but continues until she becomes overwhelmed and falls asleep. She wakes in tears, and he apologizes. After an accidental first kiss, she asks him to take responsibility; he proposes that they become a couple, and she agrees 280 281 282.

Li Qiuzhi subsequently gives her an Interstellar Travel Beacon. Its connection to his other companions reveals that he has other romantic relationships, which he had not explained before she agreed to date him. Sucrose expresses jealousy and displeasure but continues their relationship 283.

After Li Qiuzhi supplies powerful demon blood and assists her research over several days, her Friendship reaches its maximum. This grants him Fairyland of Dreams, an independent world reflecting her lifelong ambition. He later shows her around the space and encourages her to spend time there with Mona, another scholar 301 302 377.

Later research collaborations

Sucrose continues working alongside the scholars associated with Wonderland. She expresses interest in consulting Tighnari about botany and later joins Lisa and Greater Lord Rukkhadevata in examining blood collected from a Cosmic Beast 459 557.

Interstellar Travel also gives her convenient access to Sumeru, where the Akasha Internet offers opportunities to exchange ideas and research findings with other scholars 564.

Personality

Sucrose is gentle and socially hesitant, often stammering, looking away, or blushing during conversation. Her apparent introversion is explained as discomfort with the many considerations involved in social interaction—particularly manners and other people’s emotions—rather than a simple lack of interest in company 66 278.

Research transforms her manner. When studying formulas or conducting experiments, she speaks confidently and loses much of her usual hesitation. Her concentration can be so complete that she fails to hear repeated knocking, while promising new specimens can immediately brighten her mood 73 277 278.

She is careful with living subjects. She asks Li Qiuzhi to pick berries gently, excavates Valberry plants intact to preserve their health, and requests that an experimental mouse be rendered unconscious before she makes an incision so it will not suffer 67 72 278.

Her research enthusiasm coexists with a sense of obligation: despite wanting to examine newly acquired specimens immediately, she first fulfills her promise to brew Li Qiuzhi’s potions. She also shares a portion of the Lawachurl mask with Timaeus and welcomes him to observe her work 66 72.
