Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was the youngest son of Yu Yuanzhen and a former Young Sect Master of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. His expected Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Martial Soul degenerated into Luo Sanpao upon awakening, while his Innate Soul Power was only half a level. The humiliation he endured within the clan became a lasting source of insecurity. 14 113 222

To prove himself, Yu Xiaogang left the clan and joined Spirit Hall. Through his relationship with the then-Saintess Bibi Dong, he gained access to higher floors of Spirit City’s Central Library and obtained Soul Master knowledge that later formed the basis of his published theories. Spirit Hall eventually accused him of plagiarizing its research and expelled him. 31 41 75

During his time in Spirit City, Bibi Dong secretly arranged for her admirers and pursuers to harass and humiliate him while outwardly maintaining the appearance of closeness. Yu Xiaogang endured the persecution because he still hoped to use Bibi Dong’s status to access more of Spirit Hall’s secret collections and find a way to evolve Luo Sanpao. 19 20

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man usually dressed in a black scholar robe. He has a close-cropped haircut, an ordinary and somewhat stiff-looking face, and deliberately maintains an aloof, melancholy scholarly bearing. 112 197

Personality

Yu Xiaogang presents himself as calm, scholarly, reserved, and devoted to Martial Soul research. He frequently stands with his hands behind his back and adopts the bearing of a seasoned master, particularly when addressing students or those he wishes to impress. 112 115 197

Beneath this façade, he is portrayed as deeply insecure, sensitive about his weak Martial Soul and low cultivation, and intensely concerned with recognition. Being called “trash” provokes extreme anger, while public embarrassment often causes him to retreat, panic, or attempt to preserve his dignity through evasive explanations. 14 33 200

His ambition is closely tied to proving that he is not worthless. He endured repeated mistreatment in Spirit City to reach its collections, attempted to build his reputation through Martial Soul theory, and repeatedly sought talented disciples whose achievements could validate his status as a master. 19 20 112 115

Spirit City and the plagiarism scandal

Yu Xiaogang attempts to enter Spirit City Central Library’s restricted fourth floor and is arrested after Bibi Dong alerts the guards. His claim that Bibi Dong brought him there is dismissed, and his Luo Sanpao Martial Soul Certificate becomes another source of humiliation. 13 14

He remains in Spirit City despite repeated persecution because of his desire to access Spirit Hall’s collections. Qian Xunji later accuses him of deceiving Bibi Dong and plagiarizing Spirit Hall knowledge, then has him beaten, tortured, and imprisoned. 19 31

Golden Iron Triangle and the broken wedding

Yu Xiaogang, Flender, and Liu Erlong are rescued from a Blazing Sun Earthwalking Dragon by Spirit Hall forces. Yu Xiaogang reacts to his rescuers with hostility due to his resentment toward Spirit Hall. 41

With Flender’s help, Yu Xiaogang accepts Liu Erlong’s confession and agrees to marry her. Their ceremony is interrupted by Yu Luomian, who reveals that Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong are cousins; Yu Xiaogang flees in despair. 70 72

Public exposure and the search for disciples

Bibi Dong publicly exposes Yu Xiaogang’s alleged plagiarism through recordings, leaving him unable to defend the origins of his theories. 75

At Notting Academy, Yu Xiaogang first tries to recruit Xiao Wu as his disciple, claiming that he alone can properly guide an Innate Full Soul Power genius. Su Mo humiliates him and challenges the value of his knowledge and resources. 112 113

Immediately afterward, Yu Xiaogang encounters Tang San, recognizes his Twin Martial Souls, and successfully accepts him as a disciple. 115

Shrek Academy decline

Yu Xiaogang trains the Shrek Seven Devils and promotes teamwork, but several students question the value of his methods. His past as a long-term freeloader at Notting Academy is exposed, further damaging his credibility. 197 200

After witnessing Canghui Academy’s Seven-in-One Fusion Technique, he promises to create one for the Shrek Team. He fails to do so, leading Flender to publicly apologize for trusting him and withdraw his support; Yu Xiaogang’s reputation becomes a subject of ridicule across Heaven Dou Imperial City. 228 230

Return to Spirit City and crippling

Yu Xiaogang travels to Spirit City to ask Bibi Dong how Tang San can cultivate Twin Martial Souls without suffering a body-explosion crisis. He assumes that Bibi Dong still has feelings for him and tries to guarantee Tang San’s loyalty on her behalf. 233 234 235

Bibi Dong rejects him, orders his cultivation crippled and his leg broken, and has him thrown into a garbage heap outside Spirit City. He is later mistaken for a beggar, tortured by the City Management Department, and forced to survive by sleeping on the streets and scavenging for food. 236 237

Yu Xiaogang eventually escapes during Tang Hao’s attack on Spirit City and returns to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. After the clan’s downfall, he is captured and imprisoned by Spirit Hall. 283 395

Final leverage against Tang San

Su Mo later produces Yu Xiaogang as a hostage while confronting Tang San, using the former teacher’s life to pressure Tang San into submission. Yu Xiaogang urges Tang San to flee rather than save him. 514
