History

Demonic Bargain and the Invasion of Azeroth

A former student of Ner'zhul, Gul'dan helped persuade his teacher to cooperate with demons. He later carried out Kil'jaeden's demand to slaughter the Draenei in exchange for immense power. After Shattrath's destruction and the Draenei's near extinction, Kil'jaeden abandoned Draenor without fulfilling that promise, leaving behind a devastated world and a bloodthirsty Horde 149 294 326.

Gul'dan and the Shadow Council ruled through Warchief Blackhand. As Draenor's resources disappeared and the clans began fighting over food, that arrangement became increasingly precarious. A mysterious hooded stranger defeated Gul'dan and instructed him where to build a portal if Draenor faced destruction. With remaining on Draenor meaning starvation, Gul'dan rallied the Horde beneath Hellfire Citadel and sent it through the Dark Portal into Azeroth 94 95.

The stranger was Sargeras acting through Medivh's body. Gul'dan obeyed his instructions, concealing the Black Morass with fel-generated fog and preparing food, timber, and offerings for demon summoning. Eventually, he reported that every clan except the hidden Mag'har had crossed into Azeroth 112 145 149.

Betrayal of Sargeras and Loss of the Shadow Council

Durotan exposed Gul'dan's bargain with demons and warned that the Horde was being used to prepare another world for demonic conquest. Gul'dan responded by having Blackhand exile the Frostwolf Clan and sending assassins after Durotan, Draka, and their infant son. Durotan and Draka were killed, while Go'el survived. Their murders drove Orgrim Doomhammer to seek Gul'dan's overthrow 145 189.

Gul'dan also plotted against Sargeras. Their mental connection had revealed secrets of the Burning Legion, including the Tomb of Sargeras and the power hidden within it. Unwilling to be discarded as he had been by Kil'jaeden, Gul'dan accepted Karin's invitation to help strike Sargeras. He gathered more than a dozen Shadow Council warlocks into a ritual and attacked Sargeras's mind through a paired crystal ball. The interruption allowed Medivh to regain control briefly, giving Karin the opening to stab him 149 150.

The attack left Gul'dan unconscious with severe mental trauma. Orgrim's spy reported his condition, and Orgrim used Blackhand's authorization to seize him. Talongor surrendered the council's weapons, but Orgrim killed him and ordered the slaughter of the assembled warlocks. Gul'dan was spared and bound 152.

Service Under Orgrim and Execution

Gul'dan retained his life by demonstrating his usefulness. Still chained alongside Cho'gall, he presented Orgrim with death knights made from fallen human knights and the souls of dead warlocks. These soldiers combined their hosts' martial strength with spellcasting 169.

During the campaign against Quel'Thalas, Gul'dan broke the elves' runestone barrier and supplied roughly two hundred spellcasting, two-headed ogres. Released from his chains to eliminate the elven spellcasters, he overwhelmed Kane Sunfury and Solarian. Anasterian Sunstrider intervened, and a coordinated attack by the king and the Grand Archmage left Gul'dan gravely wounded 209 214 215 216.

Orgrim then ordered Gul'dan tortured for Durotan's murder. Talon Bloodmaw—formerly his apprentice Talongor—cut away his flesh before stabbing him through the heart. Cho'gall was ordered to provide a human knight's corpse for his conversion into a death knight. Gul'dan's final request for a male host went unanswered; his later body is explicitly identified as a female knight's 225 310.

As a death knight, Gul'dan killed an unnamed Alliance king during the Battle of Lordaeron. After Orgrim's death, he escaped with Jazba Soulrender and other death knights while Talon Bloodmaw covered their retreat. They seized a ship at Southshore and returned to Draenor before Karin destroyed the Dark Portal 294.

Rebuilding the Horde and Raiding the Tomb

On the dying Draenor, Gul'dan approached Ner'zhul with a plan to rebuild the Dark Portal, recover artifacts from Azeroth, and use them to reach a living world. Ner'zhul initially ordered his former student's death but accepted the proposal because he wanted to survive. Jazba subsequently pledged the remaining death knights to Gul'dan's leadership 293 294 296.

Gul'dan reopened the Dark Portal after Ner'zhul rallied the surviving clans. Once the Horde entered Azeroth, he left its warriors to distract the Alliance and departed with the death knights. He later took a stolen Stormwind boat into the Great Sea and raised the submerged island containing the Tomb of Sargeras 298 300 303 309.

Inside the tomb, Gul'dan repeatedly destroyed his own host body, consumed Shadow Demons, and seized his companions' bodies. After killing the guardian of the Scepter of Sargeras, he possessed his last companion, Drak'Sool, and claimed the artifact. With no spare hosts remaining, he abandoned his immediate attempt to obtain the Eye of Sargeras 310.

A black dragon transported him back to Draenor. Gul'dan concealed how his companions had died and claimed that the scepter alone would barely suffice without the Book of Medivh and the Eye of Dalaran. During the return journey, he also used the scepter to bring down an attacking black dragon and discovered that the Horde was transporting black dragon eggs 311.

Betrayal at the Black Temple

Gul'dan identified Karabor as Draenor's largest ley line nexus and the place needed to open a portal to another world. As the Alliance pursued the Horde, he urged Ner'zhul to leave forces behind and later proposed a route through Auchindoun to reach the Black Temple 317 323 326.

At the Black Temple, Gul'dan and Ner'zhul prepared the portal ritual using the Scepter of Sargeras and the blood of Draenei slaves. Gul'dan poured all his power into the scepter, leaving himself apparently vulnerable. When he announced that his true plan was complete, Ner'zhul forced him to his knees with the artifact—but then lost control of it. The portal revealed only void, and the spell's power stopped amid nearby orc screams 331.

Appearance

Gul'dan's appearance changes substantially between his original orc body, demonic transformation, and successive undead hosts.

  • Original body: A short orc with a twisted expression and frightening facial scars; described as being in his prime during the battle with Anasterian 209 216.
  • Eyes: Emerald green 298.
  • Demon form: Blackened hands, sharp horns, an evil aura, and an extremely hoarse voice 216.
  • Undead hosts: Initially occupies a female knight's body; later takes Jazba Soulrender's body, another death knight's body, and finally Drak'Sool's 310.
  • Clothing: Wears a black hood during preparations to reopen the Dark Portal 300.

Personality

Gul'dan seeks power rather than serving demons out of devotion. He accepts the Horde's use as a Burning Legion pawn but refuses to accept that role for himself. Kil'jaeden's broken promise reinforces his distrust, leading him to feign obedience to Sargeras while preparing a way to betray him 149.

His authority rests heavily on fear. He tortures Garona for trying to escape, orders reprisals against Durotan's family, and treats subordinates as expendable when their bodies become useful to him. After consuming his death-knight companions, he calmly misrepresents their deaths as wartime losses and an accident 125 145 310 311.

Despite his pride, Gul'dan adopts exaggerated humility when dealing with stronger figures. He bows to Sargeras and Orgrim while concealing hostility or pursuing separate plans. Death later makes him more openly defiant: knowing that another body can replace a destroyed host, he challenges Ner'zhul to execute him again 112 169 294.

Abilities & Skills

Fel and Chaos Magic

Gul'dan uses fel power for direct attacks, concealment, and large-scale magical work.

  • Burns Kane Sunfury with emerald flames that penetrate his defenses and inflict soul-searing agony 215.
  • Shrouds the Black Morass in fog to conceal Horde preparations 112.
  • Breaks Quel'Thalas's runestone barrier, describing warlock power as the opposite of the elves' magic 209.
  • Raises the submerged island containing the Tomb of Sargeras 309.
  • Blasts the scepter's demonic guardian apart with chaos magic 310.

Curses

His curses attack a target's strength and emotions.

  • Anasterian's golden flames dispel the curse, demonstrating that it can be countered by sufficiently powerful magic 216.

Demonic Transformation

Gul'dan assumes a demon form during his duel with Anasterian.

  • Exchanges powerful fel attacks with the elven king and gradually gains ground 216.
  • Cannot withstand the combined assault of Anasterian and the Grand Archmage, both Ninth Ring mages 216.

Necromancy and Body Possession

Gul'dan both creates death knights and exploits their form to survive bodily destruction.

  • Places dead warlocks' souls into human knights' corpses, producing warriors capable of spellcasting 169.
  • Uses Corpse Explosion to destroy his own host and release his soul 310.
  • Consumes souls and seizes occupied death-knight bodies, including those of his own followers 310.
  • Needs a physical vessel to avoid becoming trapped in the tomb; the loss of his final spare host prevents him from pursuing the Eye of Sargeras 310.

Accelerated Maturation and Training

He develops servants through magical alteration and coercive training.

  • Uses accelerated maturation on the three-year-old Garona, giving her an adult body 125.
  • Trains her as an assassin and uses her against his enemies 125.
  • Conducts fel experiments on Draenei children, provoking Grommash's disgust 145.

Portal Magic

Gul'dan understands the workings of interworld gateways and the artifacts needed to power them.

  • Recognizes that residual spatial rifts make rebuilding the Dark Portal possible after its destruction 294.
  • Warns Ner'zhul that activity around a two-way portal may alert the humans on the other side 296.
  • Reopens the Dark Portal and later helps prepare the Black Temple ritual 300 331.
