Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Tirisfal power implanted in childhood 147 Aegwynn placed the power of Tirisfal into his young body. During the final confrontation, the possessed Medivh claims that his body could not withstand it and that fel power preserved his life.
Control of the Guardian’s power after awakening 88 117 His power erupted at fourteen, killing his father and leaving him unconscious for six years. On awakening at about twenty, he could control an immensely powerful force, and his magical mastery advanced rapidly.

Background

Medivh was born to Aegwynn and Nielas Aran, a powerful court mage. His name means “guardian” in Thalassian; although Karin initially attributes the choice to his father, Medivh explains that Aegwynn named him and invested her hopes in that name 105.

He grew up in Stormwind Keep alongside Llane and Anduin Lothar. When his magic erupted at fourteen, Aran died trying to save him. Llane and Lothar fetched Faol from Northshire Abbey, where priests saved Medivh’s life. He remained unconscious there for six years 117.

After awakening, Medivh possessed extraordinary magical power but suffered headaches and unexplained gaps in his memory. He eventually made his home in Deadwind Pass and built Karazhan, maintaining a household that included the steward Moroes and the cook Kuke 94 117 126.

Appearance

Medivh looks more like an unkempt old man than the world’s most powerful mage 103.

  • Clothing: Coarse, simply decorated mage robes and a gray cloak over broad shoulders; he also wears a black robe and hood 103 121 133.
  • Physical condition: His frame is thin and light enough for Karin’s raven form to carry. During episodes of distress, he becomes pale and visibly exhausted 111 117 126.
  • Signs of possession: Karin observes two shadows behind him. When Sargeras reveals himself, Medivh’s body becomes shadow and flame, his hair and beard ignite, and dark horns emerge from his forehead 121 131.
  • Earlier demonic manifestation: Lothar recalls seeing his unconscious friend with a bronze-like body, horns, and a beard made of flames 139.

Personality

In his ordinary interactions, Medivh is talkative, intellectually curious, and eccentric. His breakfast conversations range from competing arcane theories to hypothetical troll varieties and whether mages should levitate while putting on trousers. He appreciates Karin’s quick thinking and gradually becomes fond of him 112 115 126.

His memory failures make him dangerous even to familiar people. After forgetting Karin’s identity, he attacks him as a thief, then releases him and apologizes once he remembers. Ale repeatedly accompanies his recovery from these episodes, though the passages do not establish why it helps 110 117.

Sargeras’s control produces a sharply different demeanor: mocking, cruel, and openly delighted by suffering. Nevertheless, Medivh retains attachments that the demon cannot completely suppress. Seeing Moroes and Kuke dead prompts him to resist, and his final words acknowledge both his struggle and his inability to overcome Sargeras alone 133 135 150.

Abilities & Skills

Guardian Magic

Medivh possesses the Guardian’s power and is regarded as the strongest mage in the world; Meryl states that he can fight a demon lord alone 88.

  • Large-scale destruction: A legendary spell rains fire upon an orc army outside Stormwind, leaving at least ten thousand dead 125.
  • Force and restraint: He effortlessly tears apart Karin’s Fourth Ring Arcane Barrier, suspends him in the air, and later crushes the orc warlock Northgrin 110 115.
  • Defensive magic: An invisible shield blocks Arcanagos’s dragon breath while Medivh forcibly holds the bronze dragon in midair 110.
  • Limits: The spell used to defend Stormwind genuinely exhausts his mental energy, leaving him unconscious and dependent on Karin for transport 125 126.

Transformation and Mobility

Medivh can transform into a raven and use magical movement in human form 94 116.

  • Raven form: Used to travel from his meeting with Gul’dan and to accompany Karin after giving him a gryphon 94 116.
  • Blink: Used to escape Lothar’s enthusiastic embrace 116.
  • Flying mounts: He calls gryphons to Karazhan with Atiesh 113.
  • Teaching transformation: He directs Karin to a book on crow transformation and lends him Atiesh to make the spell work. Karin later confirms that Medivh taught him the technique and that he still requires the staff 125 269.

Enchanting and Protective Wards

Medivh enchants weapons and maintains specialized protections around Karazhan 118 134.

  • Glamdring’s warning enchantment: Makes Karin’s sword glow faintly near orcs or demons 118.
  • Demon protection ward: Blocks demons from entering Karazhan but does not stop ordinary beings. Karin exploits it against Sargeras once the demon openly manifests 134.
  • A vulnerability in disguise: Sargeras can pass through the ward while appearing as Medivh, making it ineffective until his demonic nature is exposed 134.

Magical Knowledge and Instruction

Medivh teaches through practical demonstrations, questions, and directions to books in his private library 105 115 118.

  • Countering magic resistance: Explains that demons resistant to arcane magic can still be cut down with a conjured blade or a physical weapon 117 118.
  • Gryphon riding: After striking Karin on the head with Atiesh, Karin abruptly gains detailed knowledge of gryphon behavior and riding techniques 113.
  • Library guidance: Points Karin toward Aegwynn’s writing on Imprisonment and later toward crow transformation 115 125.
  • Possible foresight: Knows the contents of Antonidas’s letter before Karin explains them, prompting Karin to suggest prophecy. Karin later concludes that Medivh anticipated the crisis and left clues that enabled his escape 104 140.

Powers Used Under Sargeras’s Control

The possessed Medivh combines access to the Guardian’s power with Sargeras’s demonic abilities; these feats should not be treated as actions of Medivh’s unpossessed self 132 160.

  • Demonic transformation: Manifests horns, flames, claws, and a monstrous physical form 131 133 148.
  • Fel fire: Burns Karazhan’s banquet hall with dark green flames and overcomes the Shade of Aran’s fire attack 133 148.
  • Draining vitality: Strips magic and youth from Aegwynn, then attempts to take Karin’s life force, youth, and magic 133 148.
  • Overwhelming restraint and defense: Immobilizes Aegwynn, knocks Lothar down, repels Khadgar’s magic, and defeats Kel’Thuzad 148.
  • Dark Portal creation: Uses Tirisfal power to open the portal that brings the orcs into Azeroth 131.

Equipment and Resources

  • Atiesh, Legendary Staff of the Guardian — An unassuming, fire-poker-like staff with protrusions at its tip. Medivh uses it against Arcanagos, to call gryphons, and to support Karin’s crow transformation 110 113 125.
  • Glamdring — A slender, exceptionally sharp sword given to Karin and named by him. Medivh adds its orc- and demon-detection enchantment; Karin ultimately uses it to deliver Medivh’s fatal wound 118 149 150.
  • Private library — Contains advanced magical knowledge, including works on enchanting, protection, the mind, and transformation. Several books bite, evade readers, resist opening, or change their appearance 109 125 127.
  • Golden gryphon — A flying mount used during his journey with Karin and later housed at Stormwind Keep 115 116 119.

Relationships

  • Karin Sunfury — Assistant, librarian, and ultimately student. Medivh values his intelligence, gives him Glamdring, and entrusts him with Atiesh during their escape from Stormwind 112 118 125 150.
  • Aegwynn — Mother and source of his inherited Tirisfal power. She confronts him over the Dark Portal, while the possessed Medivh accuses her of treating him as a tool in her power struggles 105 131 147.
  • Nielas Aran — Father, killed while trying to save him during his childhood magical eruption. His shade later appeals to Medivh and attacks Sargeras 117 147 148.
  • King Llane Wrynn — Childhood friend and ruler whom Medivh advises. Llane refuses to believe Khadgar’s warning, trusting that Medivh’s apparent misconduct serves a greater plan 105 117 139.
  • Anduin Lothar — Childhood friend who calls him “Med.” Concerned by his changing behavior, Lothar sends apprentices to Karazhan and eventually joins the attempt to stop him 116 119 140.
  • Moroes and Kuke — Household servants whose deaths provoke Medivh’s resistance to Sargeras. Both had cared for him through his episodes of weakness and amnesia 126 135.
  • Garona — Guest whom the possessed Medivh presents as a former slave betraying Gul’dan. She affectionately calls him “Grandpa” and defends him against Khadgar’s accusations 128 139.
  • Varian Wrynn — Llane’s son, who says Medivh has always treated him kindly and visits out of personal concern 120.
  • Sargeras — Possessing entity attached to his soul. Medivh’s surviving will remains crucial to Karin’s eventual victory 126 160.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Investigation of Karazhan

After five Council of Tirisfal members disappear, Meryl and Nalaras suspect Medivh of collaborating with demons. Alexis had last gone to Karazhan to meet him. Unable to confront Medivh themselves, they ask Antonidas to prepare for demons and send investigators 88.

Medivh’s request for an apprentice gives Antonidas an opening. Karin is selected to investigate under the cover of cleaning and organizing the private library. His preparation includes mental sealing to conceal the mission from Medivh 97.

Karin’s Apprenticeship and Stormwind’s Defense

Medivh greets Karin as “our young Mr. Spy,” then questions him about magic, travel, other peoples, and demons. Life in Karazhan alternates between scholarly conversation and alarming encounters caused by Medivh’s unstable memory 103 104 105 110 112.

During their journey through the Redridge Mountains, Medivh rescues Karin from orcs and warns Lothar that an army is advancing on Stormwind 115 116. After court mage Haglin’s murder, he produces a dead satyr as the supposed culprit, although Karin suspects a cover-up 121 122. Medivh later devastates the attacking orc army, exhausting himself so completely that Karin must carry him back to Karazhan 125 126.

Sargeras’s Revelation and the Massacre

Aegwynn confronts Medivh after recognizing Tirisfal power in the Dark Portal. Speaking through his body, Sargeras admits opening the portal, killing Jazba, Alexis, and Haglin, and destroying the Council of Tirisfal 131.

Sargeras overpowers Aegwynn, kills Moroes, and massacres the nobles attending Karazhan’s banquet. Kuke kills herself after finding Moroes’s body 133. Karin uses their bodies to provoke Medivh’s grief and disrupt the possession long enough to escape 135.

Final Confrontation and Death

Karin returns with allies before Sargeras can completely consume Medivh’s soul. The possessed mage reveals a plan to control the orcs through Gul’dan, reach the Tomb of Sargeras, and achieve rebirth 140 147.

Appeals from Aegwynn, Aran’s shade, and Lothar fail to stop him. Sargeras defeats the defenders and begins draining Karin, but Gul’dan’s surprise mental attack briefly wounds the demon’s soul. Medivh’s familiar face returns, his eyes pleading, and Karin drives Glamdring through his heart 147 148 149 150.

Medivh dies thanking Karin. Sargeras’s form fully manifests as death takes hold 150.

Legacy and Official Account

Karin recognizes that he was Medivh’s student, not merely his assistant, and later declares himself Guardian of Azeroth 150 153. He continues using the raven transformation Medivh taught him with Atiesh’s assistance 269.

Stormwind’s leadership publicly presents Medivh as having died fighting the Horde. Karin later invokes this account before Silvermoon’s council to demonstrate the invasion’s seriousness; even the proud elven mages regard Medivh’s legendary strength with respect 208.
