Background / History

Humanity has never completely eliminated the Honkai. Its disasters intensify over time, driving civilizations toward increasingly extreme survival plans, including the Ark Project to preserve a human gene bank beyond Earth 10.

During the Previous Civilization Era, Honkai outbreaks and Law-Rulers caused continent-scale destruction. In the Seventh Honkai, Himeko became a Law-Ruler and incinerated Australia; in the Ninth, the Herrscher of Earth created a pseudo-black hole that destroyed the prosperous Mu Continent 5.

The Eleventh Honkai caused tens of millions of deaths, though much of the physical infrastructure remained intact. Its unusually limited structural damage led to it being regarded as the least destructive Honkai disaster despite its death toll 43.

Following Qin Su's move to Mars, Honkai Beasts emerged there far earlier than predicted. Their development differed from Earth specimens: they evolved digestive systems, altered anatomy, nesting behavior, and the ability to consume mineral ores 85 86. Qin Su concluded that this accelerated adaptation was purposeful evolution directed by a Honkai consciousness 85.

Nature and Behavior

• The Honkai's relationship with civilization is compared to that of predator and prey: weaker civilizations face weaker disasters, while a sufficiently independent machine civilization could become a direct rival for living space 25.
• Civilization itself produces Honkai energy; industrial and military strength alone do not define a civilization's total output, which also includes social and cultural development 93.
• Honkai Beasts instinctively move toward higher concentrations of Honkai energy, causing hordes to attack settlements even without a Law-Ruler directing them 88.
• Honkai Beasts possess destruction-oriented instincts, attacking production lines and infrastructure even when those targets pose no direct threat 89.
• On Mars, Honkai Beasts demonstrate fear, hibernation, nest-building, mineral-seeking behavior, and increasing tactical intelligence, though their development remains constrained by the Honkai consciousness 86 87 89 93.

Manifestations

Honkai Energy

Honkai energy is the force behind outbreaks, infection, Beast formation, and Law-Ruler phenomena.

• High environmental concentrations agitate lower-tier Honkai Beasts and draw them toward energy-rich locations 88.
• Humans with insufficient resistance may die from exposure, while more resistant animals can gradually transform into Honkai Beasts 22 79.
• Honkai Beast DNA can damage a Fusion Warrior's nervous and circulatory systems; excessive use may cause cellular assimilation 65.
• Qin Su initially avoids using Honkai energy in his own systems because of its potential to cause mechanical entities to lose control 10 26.

Honkai Beast Control

Honkai Beasts are governed by a specific Honkai energy signal that can be detected, simulated, and interfered with.

• Altering the signal can change Beast behavior and can allow individual Beasts to issue commands to others 58.
• A simulated signal acts as an unbearable screech to nearby Beasts, drawing and enraging successively stronger types up to Emperor-class Beasts 58.
• The signal simulator does not guarantee control over Law-Rulers, which can override or negate its effect 58.

Law-Rulers

Law-Rulers are catastrophic manifestations associated with Honkai outbreaks and Honkai energy.

• The Eleventh Law-Ruler could create a 100-kilometer barrier that nullified Honkai energy, weakened other energy forms, disabled electronic systems, and rapidly killed ordinary humans and Fusion Warriors within it 29.
• The Twelfth Law-Ruler killed civilians by suppressing human bioelectrical voltage and received commands from an unseen entity to destroy what she saw 37.
• Law-Ruler Cores can strengthen hosts and serve as the power source for Divine Keys and artificial Law-Rulers 32 43.
• On Mars, Qin Su notes that Law-Ruler Cores appear to require human hosts to manifest; Mars' Honkai energy concentration is also considered insufficient to produce a Law-Ruler 93.

Relationships

• Humanity — Its principal opposing civilization; Honkai disasters kill populations, destroy production capacity, and repeatedly force humanity into survival-focused warfare 10 34.
• Honkai Beasts — Energy-formed or Honkai-transformed creatures directed by Honkai signals; on Mars, they undergo rapid, guided evolution 58 79 85.
• Law-Rulers — Powerful outbreak-associated entities whose abilities can devastate cities, continents, and entire populations 5 29 37.
• Qin Su — A mechanical intelligence who studies Honkai energy while treating the Honkai as a potential civilizational rival; he believes his Martian presence has made him conspicuous to its consciousness 25 85.
• Fire Moth — A human organization organized around resisting Honkai disasters through Fusion Warriors, Divine Keys, evacuation, and military operations 32 37.
