Background / History
Construction-Site Battle and Survival
Venom previously bonded with Peter Parker, who rejected and removed it. It subsequently bonded with Eddie and joined Sandman in attacking Peter at a construction site. Peter recognized the alien suit and associated it with the increasingly extreme thoughts he had experienced while wearing it 10.
Lu Wen intervened during Peter’s rescue of Mary Jane and overwhelmed Venom Eddie in close combat. He tore away a piece of the symbiote, impaled it on reinforcing steel, and weakened it with radiation-generated heat from his chest. After sealing the fragment in an iron bucket, he stored it in System Space 11.
Peter later used the sound of steel pipes to separate the remaining Venom from Eddie. Eddie deliberately returned to the symbiote, and both were consumed by a Pumpkin Bomb’s flames. The fragment already taken by Lu Wen survived 12 16.
Bonding with Lu Wen
When Lu Wen released the fragment, it had shrunk to roughly one-third of its captured size and could barely communicate. It accepted his offer of survival under the condition that it neither control him nor interfere with his mind. After entering through his pores, it began feeding on his cellular energy and addressed him as “boss” 16.
Venom considered Lu Wen an unusually favorable host: physically compatible like Peter, but also possessing the intense mental state that Venom valued in Eddie. Its recovery was slowed by Lu Wen’s internal heat, although absorbing his genes gradually strengthened it and improved its tolerance 16 28 29.
Healing and Support Work
After recovering, Venom repaired Tadashi Hamada’s injuries. It subsequently accompanied a tracker attached to Hiro, helped Lu Wen pursue and rescue Hiro’s group, and protected the team from a boulder during Callaghan’s ambush 29 30 31 32.
Venom later healed Happy and Tony Stark. Lu Wen also supplied Tony with a prepared symbiote sample for research into combining symbiote material with nanotechnology; the proposed adaptive armor remained a research objective at that point 41 43.
Nirvana Research Institute
At the institute, Venom’s senses exposed camouflaged Sting Eels and located Devorants’ Spirit Breath Seeds. Its suit concealed Lu Wen’s human biofield from the Mana Ecology, while toxin-bearing webbing allowed him to capture the scavengers silently 45.
Venom also blocked the Crimson Substance’s neurotoxic mist. During the Calyx Beast battle, it anchored Lu Wen’s feet with tendrils and helped release the finishing Nuclear Chest Cannon. Lu Wen considered having it possess the beast and copy its genes, but rejected the untested experiment 46 48.
Appearance
- Unbonded form: Black, oil-like slime capable of gathering into a ball, spreading into a puddle, or extending thin filaments. Even the weakened fragment could form a crude face to speak 11 16.
- Eddie’s bonded form: A black covering with claws, sharp teeth, and a long scarlet tongue. It could swell into a visibly larger body during combat 11.
- Lu Wen’s bonded form: A muscular, pitch-black suit that increases his apparent bulk and height to approximately two meters. His usual configuration has a closed, full-face mask rather than an exposed mouth 32.
- Alterable features: Can reveal an enormous fanged mouth for intimidation or open its face covering to admit equipment such as Callaghan’s control mask 33.
- Energy discharge: Orange veins appear across the black chest covering when Venom channels Lu Wen’s Nuclear Chest Cannon 48.
Personality
Venom is strongly motivated by survival. After Lu Wen nearly destroys the captured fragment, it becomes cautious and compliant, accepts his restrictions, and consistently calls him “boss.” It is attentive to his moods, quietly cleaning his ransacked home when he is angry, though it timidly asks not to be made to scrub the toilet again 16 37.
Its compatibility with a host is emotional as well as physical. Venom instinctively responds to obsessions, negative emotions, and intense mental states. It regards Peter as physically ideal but mentally incompatible, while valuing Eddie’s emotional intensity despite his weaker body 16.
Venom also takes pride in its improvement. Having been mocked by other symbiotes as useless, it imagines returning without the weakness to fire and proving them wrong. It becomes openly excited about wielding the same high-heat energy it once feared, and is enthusiastic about chocolate and opportunities to feed 29 37 41 48.
Abilities & Skills
Symbiosis and Genetic Adaptation
- Enters a host through the skin and draws on cellular life energy to sustain and repair itself 16.
- Gains abilities through compatible hosts: Peter supplied its Spider-Man-derived powers, while Lu Wen’s genes strengthened the recovered fragment 16 29.
- Enhances Lu Wen’s existing physical capabilities while bonded rather than removing the fixed genetic ceiling imposed by his Compound V 46.
- Lu Wen estimates that the recovered Venom increases his overall capabilities roughly threefold, placing his enhanced strength around the hundred-ton range. This is an estimate rather than a precise measurement 36.
- Requires both physiological compatibility and emotional resonance for stable symbiosis 16.
Spider-Man-Derived Powers
- Webbing: Produces black strands for swinging, restraining targets, catching objects, and retrieving equipment 11 31 33.
- Wall movement: Enables climbing and positioning on vertical surfaces 11 45.
- Enhanced reflexes: Supplies a simplified version of Spider-Man’s reflexes to its host 12 16.
- Spider-Sense: Warns of approaching danger through a painful, electrical buzzing sensation. Greater danger produces more intense discomfort 11 32.
- Bonding requirement: Lu Wen must have Venom fully bonded to use its Spider-Man-derived abilities 31.
Shapeshifting, Armor, and Tendrils
- Rapidly spreads over the host as a full-body suit, forms claws and mouths, and changes its apparent bulk 11 32 33.
- Extends tendrils to manipulate tools, hold a phone, collect microbots in a net, or anchor Lu Wen during combat 33 37 38 48.
- Can layer itself over other equipment, including the Green Goblin combat flight suit 47.
- Forms a barrier dense enough to prevent the Crimson Substance’s neurotoxic mist from penetrating 46.
- Can divide into smaller portions for separate tasks, such as blocking a camera or accompanying Hiro’s tracker in a low-power state 29 30.
Healing and Metabolic Control
- Repairs injuries in its host and can temporarily enter other people to treat them 12 29 41 43.
- Heals Tadashi sufficiently for doctors to discharge him, rapidly repairs Happy’s visible injuries, and closes Tony’s chest wound in less than a minute 29 41 43.
- Converts Happy’s fat into energy while stimulating phenethylamine production for feeding; it also follows Lu Wen’s instruction to leave him asleep longer 41.
- Brain-repair limit: Can repair a small amount of damaged tissue, but cannot restore severely damaged important neural regions or replace every cell in a body 28.
Bioelectric and Thermal Perception
- Detects faint bioelectric fields and heat signatures without relying on eyeballs 45.
- Overlays this information onto Lu Wen’s vision, revealing camouflaged Sting Eels as green lights 45.
- Pinpoints Devorants’ Spirit Breath Seeds, allowing Lu Wen to target their vital cores 45.
- Conceals Lu Wen’s human biofield and emotional fluctuations from the Mana Ecology’s detection. This does not make him invisible to ordinary biological eyesight 45 48.
Paralytic Toxin
- Can add a biological toxin to its webbing that paralyzes the target’s nerves 45.
- Lu Wen can choose whether a web carries the toxin 45.
- Toxin production normally consumes substantial symbiote biomass; Lu Wen’s abundant energy supply allows Venom to use it extensively 45.
Heat Adaptation and Nuclear Energy Channeling
- Initially suffers severe injury from Lu Wen’s radiation-generated heat, which also slows its recovery after bonding 11 16 28.
- Eventually reports immunity to the flames it previously feared 39.
- Taps into Lu Wen’s chest reaction and participates in releasing his Nuclear Chest Cannon; the energy source belongs to Lu Wen, not Venom independently 48.
- Remaining weakness: Loud metallic vibrations cause pain and can force separation from a host. No later passage establishes that it overcomes this sonic vulnerability 11 12.
Mental Communication
- Communicates directly in its host’s mind and senses emotional states 16 37.
- Could share the thoughts and memories of previous hosts 16.
- Cannot read Lu Wen’s thoughts or memories because his system automatically maintains a mental barrier. Their direct mental communication remains functional 16.
Internal Storage and Equipment Handling
- Possesses a limited pocket-like storage space within its body 32.
- Stores Lu Wen’s laser wrist blades, clothing, and Green Goblin combat flight suit 32 47 49.
- Retrieves and fits equipment onto him, changing his clothes in approximately two seconds 47 49.
Relationships
- Lu Wen — Current principal host and “boss.” Their bond begins as a coerced survival arrangement and develops into close combat, medical, and everyday cooperation 16 29 37 48.
- Peter Parker — Former host and source of Venom’s Spider-Man-derived powers. Venom values his physical compatibility but acknowledges their lack of mental resonance 10 16.
- Eddie — Former host whose intense emotions sustained a compatible mental bond. Venom considers his body inferior to Peter’s and Lu Wen’s; Eddie dies with the main symbiote mass 12 16.
- Sandman — Former battlefield ally during the construction-site attack on Peter 10.
- Hiro Hamada — Surveillance target under Lu Wen’s instructions and a teammate supported through Venom’s mobility and protection 30 31 32.
- Tadashi Hamada, Happy, and Tony Stark — Recipients of Venom’s healing 29 41 43.
- Other symbiotes on Klyntar — Previously mocked Venom as useless; it hopes its developing fire resistance will overturn that reputation 29.
Trivia
- Phenethylamine is identified as a symbiote’s primary food. Lu Wen’s cellular energy can keep Venom alive, but it still particularly enjoys chocolate 37.
- The captured fragment could not initially enter System Space uncontained. Weakening it and sealing it inside an iron bucket satisfied the system’s restrictions on storing independently conscious life 11.
- The sample given to Tony retains only a faint trace of instinctive consciousness while remaining viable for experimentation 43.
