Background / History
Early Education
Hiro graduated from high school at thirteen. Confident in his mechanical knowledge, he initially dismissed college as pointless because it would mean studying things he already knew. Tadashi later introduced him to the university, an experience Hiro recalls when Lu Wen opens his eyes to the possibilities of superhuman science 27 28.
Tadashi’s Hospitalization
Hiro first meets Lu Wen outside the emergency room after the technology expo fire. Lu Wen explains that he rescued Tadashi and that Tadashi asked him to look after Hiro. Although emergency surgery saves Tadashi’s life, his severe injuries and brain trauma leave him unconscious 26 27.
Hiro stays at the hospital overnight and initially has little appetite. Lu Wen draws him out by challenging him to test his supposedly impossible strength. Over the following week, Hiro regains some energy but continues visiting Tadashi every day 28.
Lu Wen eventually uses Venom to repair Tadashi’s injuries while Hiro is away collecting his brother’s belongings. Tadashi returns home physically healed but still unconscious, and Baymax takes over monitoring his condition. Hiro refuses to attend university until his brother can accompany him 29 30.
Pursuit of the Masked Man
Determined to avenge Tadashi, Hiro upgrades Baymax and follows the masked man controlling the stolen microbots. His attempt to confront the suspect at the docks puts him and Tadashi’s four friends in danger. They escape in a car, plunge from a broken bridge, and are pulled to safety by Lu Wen 31.
Hiro then designs equipment suited to his companions’ specialties. At an abandoned island research base, he discovers that the masked man is Callaghan. Callaghan’s claim that Tadashi was responsible for his own fate enrages Hiro enough that he wants to kill him. When his friends object, Hiro leaves the island on Baymax without them 32 33.
Portal Rescue and Return to School
During the confrontation at Krei Tech, Hiro devises a plan against Callaghan and works with the others. He subsequently enters the unstable portal with Baymax to rescue Abigail; Lu Wen follows and helps them escape safely 33.
After Callaghan’s arrest, Lu Wen tells Hiro that Tadashi has awakened. Hiro rushes to the hospital and embraces his brother in tears. A week later, with Tadashi fully recovered and out of observation, the brothers begin attending the institute together 33 34.
Before Lu Wen leaves, Hiro helps prepare a new Baymax for him, with Tadashi adding a rehabilitation program. Hiro asks whether Lu Wen will return, and Lu Wen encourages the brothers to distinguish themselves through their research 34.
Appearance
- Youthful face: Retains some baby fat and is initially described as looking fourteen or fifteen 26.
- Clothing: Wears a hoodie at his first appearance and holds a cap on his knees while waiting outside the emergency room 26.
Personality
Hiro is intellectually proud and intensely curious. He initially rejects Lu Wen’s claim of possessing three-ton arm strength, reasoning that no ordinary human could achieve it without visible enhancement equipment. Once his measurements support the claim, he eagerly asks about genetic enhancement and the stronger beings in Lu Wen’s world 28.
His attachment to Tadashi can override his own needs and plans. He neglects food while waiting at the hospital, visits his brother daily, and delays university for weeks rather than attend without him 28 29 30.
Hiro is also impulsive when angry. He initially insists that Baymax can defeat the masked man despite the danger, and Callaghan’s indifference toward Tadashi briefly turns his desire for justice into an urge to kill. His eventual participation in Abigail’s rescue contrasts with that earlier fixation on revenge 31 33.
Abilities & Skills
Mechanical Engineering and Robotics
Hiro is a precocious mechanic capable of building original machines and adapting existing technology for specialized uses 27 30 32.
- Builds a button-sized tracker at Lu Wen’s request 30.
- Designs weapons tailored to his teammates’ specialties 32.
- Produces laser-blade bracers for Lu Wen based on Wasabi’s equipment 32.
- Helps prepare a new Baymax alongside Tadashi 34.
Microbots and Neural Control
Hiro invents the Swarm Robots, also called microbots, and their neural-control sensor. The system allows its user to arrange large numbers of robots into coordinated forms through thought 28 35.
- Describes the system’s possibilities as limited only by imagination 28.
- Uses his last remaining microbot to locate the masked man at the docks 31.
- His sensor later allows Lu Wen to demonstrate coordinated robot movement and clean Tony Stark’s damaged garage 35.
- The technology becomes a reference point when Lu Wen proposes adaptive nano armor to Tony 43.
Testing and Analysis
Hiro constructs a machine to measure Lu Wen’s strength, obtaining readings of three tons of normal force and sixty tons of maximum explosive force 28.
- Uses a tablet to review the test data 28.
- Questions whether his equipment is malfunctioning because the results appear impossible 28.
- The measurements remain approximate: Lu Wen suspects the improvised machine cannot capture his true upper limit 28 36.
Baymax Modification
Hiro adapts Tadashi’s healthcare robot for pursuit and combat 31.
- Scans Baymax’s exterior measurements before upgrading him 31.
- Adds martial-arts capability to help capture the masked man 31.
- Later operates with a flight-capable Baymax during the island confrontation and portal disaster 33.
Relationships
- Tadashi Hamada — Older brother and a major influence on Hiro’s education. Tadashi’s injuries drive Hiro’s withdrawal, delayed enrollment, and pursuit of Callaghan 27 30 31 34.
- Aunt Cass — Aunt and caregiver. She comforts Hiro at the hospital and sends him food through Lu Wen; Hiro later conceals his outings with Baymax from her 26 28 30.
- Lu Wen — Protector hired through Tadashi’s emergency request. He helps Hiro recover emotionally, repeatedly rescues him, and becomes someone Hiro treats as a teammate 27 28 31 32.
- Baymax — Tadashi’s healthcare robot and Hiro’s investigative partner. Baymax monitors Tadashi, seeks emotional support for Hiro, and accompanies him into the portal to rescue Abigail 29 31 33.
- Wasabi, Honey Lemon, GoGo, and Fred — Tadashi’s classmates and Hiro’s teammates. They support Hiro and join his investigation, but oppose his wish to kill Callaghan 30 31 33.
- Callaghan — Opponent who controls Hiro’s microbots. His dismissal of Tadashi’s sacrifice provokes Hiro’s most violent reaction during the investigation 32 33.
- Krei / Ge Li — Technology businessman contractually committed to funding the Hamada brothers’ research through Lu Wen’s intervention 33 34.
