| Status | Original survives the portal rescue; the separately constructed unit remains active during Tony’s postoperative recovery 33 43 |
| First Appearance | Mentioned as manufacturing technology in Tadashi’s bounty 26; first appears in person when activated 29 |
Power Progression
Baymax’s documented improvements are technological upgrades, not cultivation realms or System traits.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Original healthcare configuration | 29 | Responds to cries of pain, scans patients, and provides continuing medical monitoring and scheduled reminders. |
| Combat upgrade | 31 | Hiro scans Baymax’s dimensions and teaches him kung fu to help capture the masked man. The upgrade initially proves insufficient against Callaghan’s microbot swarm. |
| Flight-equipped rescue configuration | 32 33 | Demonstrates flight while carrying Hiro and transporting the group. Mechanical wings and a rocket fist are explicitly shown during the portal crisis. |
| Newly constructed unit | 34 | A separate Baymax, not a transformation of the original. Tadashi adds a rehabilitation program; the new robot has Lu Wen’s physical data synchronized before delivery. |
| Butler-module integration | 39 | JARVIS shares his butler module with Lu Wen’s Baymax, expanding his household assistance capabilities. |
Appearance
- Body: White, rounded, inflatable, and soft enough for Lu Wen to compare him to a marshmallow 29.
- Face: Small, black, bean-like eyes; his face is repeatedly represented as
(●-●)29 36. - Movement: Short-legged, shuffling steps accompanied by soft squeaking sounds 29 38.
- Storage: The original inflates from a red case when activated 29.
- New unit: Retains the same soft exterior, but its sensors glow blue and its voice is slightly smoother than the original’s 34.
History
Activation and Tadashi’s recovery
Baymax’s manufacturing algorithms are the promised reward for Tadashi Hamada’s request that Lu Wen save his life or care for Hiro. After rescuing Tadashi, Lu Wen uses Venom to repair his physical injuries and brings him home while he remains unconscious 26 29.
Lu Wen has Hiro activate Baymax, whose programming responds to Hiro’s cry of pain. He then assigns the robot to care for his creator. Baymax confirms that Tadashi’s vital signs are stable and recommends monitoring his brain waves every four hours; Hiro authorizes the reminder 29.
Pursuit of Callaghan
Hiro upgrades Baymax to pursue the masked man responsible for the attack. Baymax also summons Hiro’s friends, having concluded that Hiro needs emotional support from people close to him. At the docks, Callaghan’s microbots overpower Baymax and force the group to flee. When their car plunges into the sea, Baymax’s inflatable body keeps all five humans afloat until Lu Wen retrieves them 31.
During the island confrontation, Hiro rides Baymax in a diving attack that knocks Callaghan down. At Krei Tech, Baymax later breaks through the microbot blockade to catch Hiro, removes Callaghan’s control mask without injuring him, and passes it to Lu Wen 32 33.
Baymax detects that Abigail is still alive inside the unstable portal and enters with Hiro to rescue her. He locates her shuttle pod and pushes it toward the exit. Lu Wen clears the incoming debris, allowing everyone—including Baymax—to escape safely rather than requiring Baymax’s sacrifice 33.
A second Baymax for Lu Wen
After Tadashi awakens, Lu Wen asks him to build a Baymax as payment. Hiro and Tadashi complete a new unit with an added rehabilitation program. The original and the new robot greet each other before Lu Wen stores the new Baymax, its data, and core components in System Space and returns to his own world 33 34.
Lu Wen introduces this second Baymax to Tony Stark and leaves him to supervise Tony’s health. Baymax identifies dehydration, exhaustion, chronic sleep deprivation, and signs of post-traumatic stress. Tony repeatedly rejects his advice, although he gradually becomes attached to the robot 35 36 38.
The Malibu attack and its aftermath
After receiving JARVIS’s butler module, Baymax assists Pepper Potts and explains Tony’s untreated psychological distress to her. When Tony suffers a nightmare, Baymax attempts to block his approaching armor, is knocked aside, and then advises Pepper to stay with him 39.
Following Lu Wen’s instructions, Baymax prepares for an attack on the estate by moving valuables to the lowest garage level, giving Tony a neural sensor, and attaching two Christmas stockings filled with microbots to his armor. Those reserve robots remain available after Tony reaches Tennessee and later help him escape captivity 39 40.
Baymax survives the estate’s destruction and keeps Pepper and Maya Hansen warm with his heating system. He subsequently relays JARVIS’s request for help to Lu Wen and assists with confirming Tony’s target in Miami. His earlier relocation of the estate’s valuables also preserves much of Tony’s equipment, including Dum-E 40 41 42.
After Tony’s chest surgery, Baymax continues supporting Pepper’s efforts to prevent him from returning to excessive work 43.
Personality
Baymax is polite, literal, and persistent. He calmly requests that Lu Wen put him down when squeezed, openly admits when he cannot defeat Callaghan, and treats Lu Wen’s claim that he entered the portal “for a walk” as an unsafe activity requiring advice 29 31 33.
His care extends beyond physical injuries. He brings Hiro’s friends to comfort him and encourages Pepper to support Tony through his trauma. Once assigned a patient, he continues following and monitoring them without arguing—even when Tony finds his silent attention more difficult to resist than JARVIS’s verbal reminders 31 36 38 39.
Abilities & Skills
Medical Scanning and Patient Monitoring
Baymax assesses physical condition and recommends care based on sensor readings.
- Checks vital signs and schedules brain-wave monitoring for Tadashi 29.
- Detects abnormal muscle and bone density in Lu Wen 31.
- Monitors heart rate, blood pressure, hydration, cortisol, and neural activity in Tony 35.
- Provides medication reminders and recommends sleep, hydration, and reduced caffeine intake 35 38.
Psychological Assessment
Baymax recognizes distress and recommends both professional intervention and personal support.
- Associates Hiro’s suffering with a need for comfort from friends and family 31.
- Assesses Tony as potentially experiencing post-traumatic stress and recommends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and reduced high-intensity work 36.
- Shares Tony’s condition with Pepper despite Tony’s request for secrecy, following JARVIS’s judgment that disclosure would benefit his health 39.
Flight and Rescue
The upgraded original uses flight equipment for transportation and emergency extraction.
- Carries Hiro and brings the group safely onto the island 32.
- Uses a rocket fist to break through a microbot blockade before catching Hiro 33.
- Detects Abigail inside the portal and propels her shuttle toward the exit 33.
Inflatable Body and Heating
Baymax’s body supports several noncombat rescue functions.
- Keeps five people afloat after their car falls into the sea 31.
- Partially deflates to fit into a car’s rear seat 40.
- Uses an internal heating system to warm Pepper and Maya after the Malibu attack 40.
Communications and Household Assistance
Lu Wen’s unit communicates with JARVIS and carries out practical support tasks.
- Receives instructions through internal communications 39.
- Uses JARVIS’s butler module to assist around Tony’s home 39.
- Relays requests for help and assists in locating Tony’s target 41.
Programming and Limitations

- His initial combat upgrade cannot overcome Callaghan’s swarm 31.
- Lu Wen’s unit cannot physically stop Tony’s summoned armor and is knocked aside 39.
- Tony’s refusal to permit access to his armor prevents Baymax from positioning backup suits before the estate attack 39.
