Background / History

Origins at Autumn Mountain Slaughterhouse

Jinbao formed from the accumulated grievances of cats and dogs at Autumn Mountain Slaughterhouse. Before becoming Qin Yan’s companion, it killed animal torturers and poachers in incidents including the Lane 38 case, where victims appeared to have been mauled by wild beasts 31.

Investigators later discovered a resentment-gathering formation beneath the slaughterhouse pit, establishing that the anomaly’s creation was not accidental. However, the formation alone could produce only a B-rank anomaly. Jinbao revealed that a tomb containing a special stone lay beneath the slaughterhouse, but refused to explain further. Xiao Zhen concluded that the people attempting to create an anomaly had failed to control it and had instead been killed by it 35.

Becoming Qin Yan’s Companion

Qin Yan said she had found Jinbao and named it after asking the little black puppy which name it wanted. She bathed it, brought it to bed, and began introducing it to people at Fu Yunting’s company 25 27.

To Jinbao, Qin Yan’s soul appeared as a warm light that attracted it without causing the pain sunlight could inflict on yin creatures. Her gentleness and sincere affection won it over, and it willingly compressed itself into a tiny shell to remain beside her 31.

Fu Nanshan initially assessed Jinbao as a Super A-Class anomaly, but subsequently identified it as S-rank. This was a correction of his assessment, not a documented increase in Jinbao’s power. Xiao Zhen later recognized it as YS-02, the Hellhound 27 30 34.

Appearance

Jinbao usually appears as a small, chubby black puppy, concealing a much larger, two-headed form 25 27 30.

  • Puppy form: Fluffy black fur and jet-black eyes with a difficult-to-notice dark red beneath them 25.
  • True form: Enormous, compared to a small mountain, with two powerful heads and scarlet eyes 30.
  • Eerie aura: Its true form is surrounded by energy capable of terrifying observers or driving them insane 30.
  • Contrasting expressions: It readily switches from threatening looks toward others to a harmless, affectionate expression for Qin Yan 35.

Personality

Jinbao is fiercely protective of cats and dogs and deeply hostile toward humans who abuse them. It condemns the unequal treatment of human and animal lives, resenting a system in which innocent animals may suffer punishment for retaliating against human cruelty. When confronted by Fu Nanshan, it argues that strength gives it the right to decide whether the abusers live 30 32.

Despite its pride and violent temper, Jinbao can be persuaded. It accepts Fu Nanshan’s promise to secure punishment for the abusers, then adopts Fu Yunting’s argument that revenge need not mean immediate death 30 32.

With Qin Yan, it is affectionate, eager for praise, and openly devoted. It nuzzles her, wags its tail enthusiastically, and delights in being held. Its contemptuous treatment of other people contrasts sharply with its willingness to act like an ordinary pampered puppy for her 33 35 40.

Abilities & Skills

Form Changing

Jinbao can shift between its tiny puppy appearance and its enormous two-headed form 30.

  • Compresses itself into a small shell to live beside Qin Yan 31.
  • Can appear harmless enough that Special Administration Bureau personnel fail to recognize its true nature 39.
  • Its disguise does not prevent animals or experienced observers from sensing danger 25 34.

Physical Combat

Jinbao possesses overwhelming strength, particularly against lower-ranked anomalies 38 39.

  • Pins an attacker beneath one paw with enough force to crack the ground 38.
  • Beats the B-rank Blood Wedding Dress into tatters and carries it back in its mouth 39.
  • Captures a B-rank Dreamweaving Butterfly and brings it home 33.
  • Fu Nanshan admits that he cannot defeat Jinbao 31.

Eerie Energy

Jinbao manifests black mist and dangerous eerie energy 30.

  • Uses a gust and black mist during its attack on the animal abusers’ villa 30.
  • Injures Fu Nanshan with black mist despite his defensive Golden Bell of Sanskrit script 30.
  • Fu Nanshan warns that an uncontrolled release could affect people within dozens of miles, potentially turning nearby or physically vulnerable people into eerie monsters 30.
  • Its presence deters lower-ranking Anomaly from approaching Qin Yan 43.

Supernatural Communication

Jinbao communicates through an energy manifestation rather than ordinary spoken speech 43.

  • Discusses punishment and justice with Qin Yan’s uncles 30 32.
  • Reveals this ability to Qin Yan when it promises to protect her 33.

Limitations

  • Mental attacks: Meimei describes Jinbao’s attacks as primarily physical and says it cannot counter mental attacks effectively 45.
  • Concealed Nightmare Qi: Jinbao and the others fail to detect the Nightmare Qi hidden on the Blood Wedding Dress, allowing it to enter Qin Yan’s dream 43.
  • Education: It refuses to read Fu Nanshan’s report and later acknowledges that it has neither read books nor attended school 31 45.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Rescue of the Abused Animals

  • Jinbao frees the cats and dogs used in staged rescue videos and lets them attack their abusers 29 30.
  • Fu Nanshan stops it from killing the fleeing perpetrators and promises that they will pay. Jinbao agrees provisionally, warning that it will return if their punishment is unsatisfactory 30.
  • It leads the injured animals to the Fu residence, where Qin Yan and Doctor Song care for them 30 31.
  • Fu Yunting persuades it to pursue public exposure, loss of income, and prolonged suffering rather than simply killing the perpetrators 32.
  • Jinbao leaves to obtain a nightmare-causing entity and breaks into the Special Administration Bureau, triggering a red alert. It returns carrying the Dreamweaving Butterfly 32 33.

Blood Wedding Dress and Nightmare

  • Jinbao intervenes when the Blood Wedding Dress’s controlled bride threatens Qin Yan with a bloodied dagger 38.
  • It defeats the anomaly, while Fu Nanshan publicly takes credit for subduing it. Most bureau personnel do not recognize Jinbao’s involvement 39.
  • Its successful defense of Qin Yan eases Fu Yunting and Fu Nanshan’s earlier concerns about keeping it nearby 40.
  • Its protection proves incomplete against Nightmare’s concealed mental intrusion. After Qin Yan’s rescue, Jinbao warns that Nightmare itself remains alive; only a wisp of its incarnation was destroyed 43.

Life with Qin Yan’s Companions

  • Qin Yan shares Meimei’s spirit fruits with Jinbao 44.
  • Meimei claims leadership of the companions, arguing that intelligence and experience matter more than combat strength. Jinbao challenges the claim but eventually stops arguing 45.
  • Jinbao continues staying near Qin Yan, resting in her room alongside her growing group of unusual companions 50.

Relationships

  • Qin Yan — Its accepted master and the focus of its loyalty. Her warmth and affection draw it to her; they promise to protect one another 31 33.
  • Fu Nanshan — Initially a wary opponent who suffers injuries while restraining Jinbao. Jinbao nevertheless grants him a chance to arrange justice for the abused animals 30.
  • Fu Yunting — Persuades Jinbao to reconsider how it takes revenge. His initial alarm over its presence diminishes after it protects Qin Yan 31 32 40.
  • Xiao Zhen — Recognizes Jinbao as the S-rank Hellhound. Jinbao treats him contemptuously, while Xiao Zhen keeps its connection to Qin Yan secret to protect her 34 35.

  • Zhaocai — The calico cat fears Jinbao, prompting Fu Yunting to arrange for the cat to live at his company after recovery 25.
