Background / History
Underground origins and meeting Han Shuo
Gilbert grew up in Black Dragon City in the Underground World, where his grandfather Gilges was patriarch. His father taught him that treasure and beautiful women were essential to earning other Black Dragons’ respect. Gilbert secretly left home on his first journey, became lost, and accepted the Lizardmen’s promises of treasure, women, and guidance to the surface 146 147 375.
Helping the Lizardmen attack a Dark Elf settlement brought him into conflict with Han Shuo’s party. A Dark Elf’s life-force-powered arrow badly wounded him, and the Forest Trolls subsequently overwhelmed him. Gilbert surrendered, transformed into a young man, and entered a master-servant contract with Han Shuo 145 146 147.
Han Shuo treated his wounds with Gorgon blood essence and took him toward the surface. Along the way, the Lizardmen rewarded Gilbert with a chest of crystals, which Han Shuo promptly placed in his own Spatial Ring for “safekeeping” 147.
Death Cemetery and Warren City
While recovering, Gilbert watched over the site where Han Shuo was refining the Earth Armor Zombie. He disliked being confined to the Death Cemetery and repeatedly begged to be taken outside 165 180.
During the operation at Aski Manor, Gilbert’s dragon form became the party’s means of breaking through buildings and escaping into the air. The subsequent flight from Warren City exposed his inexperience: two archmages caught him off guard, injured him, and slowed his flight. Han Shuo eventually sent him back to the Death Cemetery to recover 183 184 188 191.
Gilbert later hunted high-level magical beasts with Han Shuo and absorbed their cores to heal. His dismissive treatment of the Earth Armor Zombie also earned him a lesson when the emerging undead trapped him inside a fissure 207.
Forbidden Land
After following a Golden Dragon and a Cyclops into the Forbidden Land, Gilbert lost access to powers suppressed by its seal, including flight. His actions provoked both creatures into pursuing him, forcing him to call for Han Shuo’s help 241 242.
When Han Shuo lost control of the power he had absorbed, Gilbert initially refused to fight his master even in self-defense. The Golden Dragon and Cyclops persuaded him to help restrain Han Shuo as a rescue attempt. Han Shuo nearly killed Gilbert with a hundred-meter blade attack, but recovered enough control to injure his own arm and redirect the strike into the sky, breaking the seal 244.
Gilbert helped the injured Han Shuo sit upright and remained beside him during his recovery. This display of loyalty later influenced Han Shuo’s decision to obtain a Green Dragon’s core for his evolution 245 351.
Soul Annihilation Mercenary Group
Gilbert worked alongside Trunks on missions while using Han Shuo’s cultivation technique to increase his strength. He also helped the group escape a contested mithril mine with sacks of raw ore 266 351.
After evolving to the second tier, Gilbert became stronger than Trunks and commanded considerable authority among the mercenaries. When Trunks was critically injured, Gilbert stopped enraged members from rushing into a retaliatory attack. He subsequently helped defend their cliffside headquarters, attacking the enemy’s airborne advance with poisonous dragon breath 375 404.
Sacrifice for the Black Dragon Clan
An urgent message from Gilges brought Gilbert to his knees before Han Shuo, pleading for help. On reaching the clan’s canyon, they found four dead Black Dragons, including Gilbert’s father, and seventeen survivors imprisoned by the Ice and Snow God Temple 466 467.
During the rescue, Gilbert carried Elizabeth and the Ice Jade Cage toward the Fire-Extreme Land while the Fire Armored Corpse fought the spreading cold. With the passengers nearing death and insufficient time remaining, Gilbert burned his life force to double his speed. He ignored Han Shuo’s and Gilges’s pleas to stop, reached the valley, and died 475.
Little Skeleton urged Han Shuo to preserve Gilbert’s soul. Han Shuo subsequently offered him a return as either a Bone Dragon through necromancy or a demon through demonic cultivation. Gilbert chose the latter because he wanted greater strength 475 484.
Resurrection and loss of his clan
While awaiting a new body, Gilbert cultivated his soul inside the Soul-Hiding Ring. He preferred to wait until Han Shuo could recover his original remains rather than accept a different foundation for the reconstruction 486 540.
Han Shuo eventually used rare materials, objects from the Abyss, and Gilbert’s remains to rebuild him in the Fire-Extreme Land. Gilbert trained inside a blood cocoon to synchronize his soul with the new body and understand the darkness divine power in his bones. He emerged alive at the same place where he had died 588 589 598.
Gilbert later reunited with Gilges and paid respects to his father. His grandfather taught him clan secrets in preparation for succession, but Gilbert had little interest in leadership and wanted to return to Han Shuo 649.
The reunion was temporary. Han Shuo later informed Gilbert that the Black Dragon Clan had been destroyed and Gilges killed. With Caesar, Erickson, and the other culprits already dead, Gilbert was left grieving without anyone remaining against whom to direct his revenge 670.
Continent of the Gods
Gilbert cultivated darkness power after reaching the Continent of the Gods. Alongside Bolands and Blood Spirit, he became one of Celestial Pivot Pharmacy’s three strongest fighters. His unusual body allowed him to defeat opponents whose divine cultivation exceeded his own 748 749 752.
He fought in the Fifth Division’s coordinated formations during the Divine Guard team competition. The division overwhelmed the Seventh Division, defeated the Second Division, and won after Qinglin conceded on behalf of the First Division 792 795.
As a Han Family fighter, Gilbert helped Bolands kill Kelison and joined the attack that finished Quincy. He later wanted immediate retaliation when Shatuo humiliated Bolands, but obeyed Bolands’s order not to endanger the family through an impulsive confrontation 887 897.
When Luca’s forces threatened the Han Family guards, Gilbert identified himself to Boro through his longstanding connection with Han Hao. Han Hao’s confirmation secured Boro’s intervention. During a later Godhunter ambush, Han Hao again protected Gilbert and his companions by confronting Miller and ordering them back to Demon-Hidden Valley 920 960.
Appearance
- Human form: A youthful, reasonably handsome man with coarse, charcoal-dark skin, black eyes, and a muscular physique. After recovering from his initial injuries, he wore gleaming black robes and carefully groomed his hair 165 259 375.
- Dragon form: An enormous Black Dragon with black scales, sharp teeth, lantern-sized eyes, and a deep, resonant voice. His body measured thirty meters long during the flight to the Fire-Extreme Land 183 244 475.
- After his second-tier evolution: Became larger, with ink-black scales carrying an ancient, desolate aura. His human eyes acquired a distant quality, largely obscured by his strong evil aura 375.
- After resurrection: Retained the ability to alternate between an enormous dragon and his familiar dark-skinned human appearance 598.
Personality
Gilbert is boastful, lustful, loud, and extravagantly flattering toward Han Shuo. His early ambition reflects his upbringing: he wants treasure, women, and recognition among Black Dragons. On his first journey, arrogance and lack of combat experience repeatedly expose him to danger. He nevertheless shows little embarrassment about begging for mercy or seeking his master’s protection 146 165 188 242.
Beneath that behavior, Gilbert is deeply loyal to both Han Shuo and his family. He refuses to attack Han Shuo merely to save himself and ultimately sacrifices his life for his grandfather and clansmen. Death and years of disembodied existence give him a more determined attitude toward cultivation; when his body is rebuilt, he treats becoming stronger as a necessity rather than a matter of vanity 244 475 589.
Resurrection does not erase his irreverence or foul-mouthed humor. He continues teasing others and provoking enemies, even using insults to disrupt Kelison’s concentration in battle. His loyalty can also make him rash, as shown by his urge to avenge Bolands immediately and his willingness to propose a suicidal fight against the Death Main God 752 760 887 897 941.
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Transformation and Flight
Gilbert can shift between human and Black Dragon forms amid black radiance 146 185.
- Uses his dragon form to demolish obstacles, scatter enemy ranks, and carry companions through the air 183 184 188.
- His size makes him conspicuous, and the space available on his back limits how many people he can transport at once 185.
- Severe injuries reduce his flight speed; the Forbidden Land’s seal temporarily prevents him from flying 188 242.
- Once doubled his speed by consuming his life force, at the cost of his life 475.
Strength and Durability
Even before resurrection, Gilbert’s human form retained substantial Black Dragon strength. An intermediate swordsman’s battle aura failed to injure him, and ordinary mercenaries could not match him in grappling 181 259.
- His reconstructed body was forged using demonic-artifact methods and is more than ten times tougher than an ordinary deity’s body 887.
- Survived Kelison’s blow without meaningful injury—an attack described as potentially fatal even to Bolands 887.
- As an early-stage Lower God, overwhelmed late-stage Lower Gods and severely wounded an early-stage Middle God who underestimated him 748 752.
- Despite his defenses, he acknowledges that Blood Spirit and Bolands possess greater offensive power 887.
Dragon Breath and Venom Resistance
Gilbert possesses destructive breath attacks and exceptional resistance to poison 145 188 233.
- Sprays acidic venom capable of inflicting severe injuries on groups of enemies 145.
- Unleashes flame against Griffin Legion knights 188.
- His second-tier poisonous breath combines toxic effects with powerful physical impact; damp conditions enhance its effectiveness 404.
- Can fight and conceal himself in mire, where his venom resistance makes him well suited to pursuing poisonous opponents 233.
Plucking Yin to Replenish Yang
Han Shuo adapted this technique to Gilbert’s transformed anatomy using Demonic Essence and a seed of Natal Blood Essence 229.
- Allows Gilbert to absorb yin energy during sexual activity and use it to strengthen himself 229 351.
- Was taught to counter the physical harm that excessive indulgence could otherwise cause Black Dragons, particularly during evolution 229.
- Contributed to his rapid growth while he worked with Trunks 351.
Soul Cultivation
Gilbert practices a Demon Gate method for refining Fiendish Souls, initially taught while he existed inside the Soul-Hiding Ring 486.
- Strengthens his soul’s resilience and endurance 486 540.
- Prepared his soul to inhabit the reconstructed body 589.
- Continues to make his divine soul stronger than that of an ordinary darkness deity at the same realm 749.
- Does not guarantee resurrection if his soul’s imprint is destroyed; Han Shuo explicitly warns that such destruction would make his death permanent 941.
Darkness Power and Demonic Fusion
Gilbert cultivates darkness divine power within the same body that contains demonic energy from its refinement. Unlike Han Shuo’s separately cultivated bodies, these powers coexist in one vessel 748 749.
- Produces unusually overbearing darkness divine power with demonic-artifact characteristics 748 749.
- Can still use the divine artifacts of the Continent of the Gods despite his altered power 786.
- Receives guidance from Han Hao on merging darkness power with demonic cultivation 936.
- His body’s strength and compatibility with his soul make another external incarnation unnecessary in Han Shuo’s judgment 943.
- Han Shuo later plans to temper the forged body further with Profound Yin Qi; completion is not shown in the provided account 1012.
Combat Experience and Coordination
- Early limitation: Initially relies on brute force rather than martial technique. Gabriel exploits this weakness and cuts his spear in half 212.
- Formation combat: Fights under Bolands in coordinated Fifth Division and Han Family formations 792 795 887.
- Provocation: Uses sustained verbal abuse to anger opponents and create openings for allies, notably during Kelison’s defeat 887.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pitch-black spear — An early weapon used in human form; broken by Gabriel’s sword aura 212.
- Dragon-language Bone — The means through which Gilges communicated the clan’s emergency to Gilbert 467.
- Soul-Hiding Ring — Crafted by Han Shuo to shelter Gilbert’s disembodied soul and allow communication. It housed him during his soul cultivation before resurrection 484 486 589.
Relationships
- Han Shuo / Brian — Master, rescuer, and closest companion. Their contract initially gives Han Shuo control over Gilbert’s life and death and allows him to sense Gilbert’s location. Their bond grows beyond a conventional familiar relationship, culminating in Gilbert’s sacrifice and Han Shuo’s determination to restore him 147 470 475 598.
- Gilges — Grandfather and Black Dragon patriarch. Deeply concerned for Gilbert after his disappearance, Gilges later hopes to make him his successor. His eventual death devastates Gilbert 375 649 670.
- Unnamed father — Taught Gilbert the Black Dragons’ pursuit of treasure and women. Gilbert finds his body among the clan members killed during the Ice and Snow God Temple’s attack 146 467.
- Trunks — Mercenary comrade. Gilbert completes missions alongside him and helps maintain order and defend the Soul Annihilation Mercenary Group during his incapacitation 351 404.
- Han Hao / Little Skeleton — Longstanding companion from the Qio Continent. Gilbert initially envies Han Shuo’s affection for him, later recognizes his superior strength, and eventually receives his guidance on power fusion 214 405 934 936.
- Earth Armor Zombie — Companion whose abilities Gilbert initially underestimates. After Gilbert mocks him, the zombie traps him in the ground; he later joins Little Skeleton in pressuring Gilbert into digging up Almeric Cotton’s grave 207 245.
- Bolands — Fellow Han Family fighter and formation leader. Gilbert fights alongside him against Kelison and accepts his order to postpone revenge against Shatuo 792 887 897.
- Blood Spirit — Fellow disciple and frequent combat partner. They fight together in major battles, though Blood Spirit eventually becomes strong enough to drive back both Gilbert and Bolands during a joint spar 752 887 934.
- Lanya — Nine-Headed Serpent companion who fights alongside him during the defense of the mercenary headquarters 404 405.
