Appearance
- Hair and complexion: Short, soft red hair and pale, smooth skin 119.
- Eyes: Clear black eyes, described as warm during his reunion with Anyo 119.
- Apparent age: Retains a teenage appearance after obtaining Dragon Vein Power; Deidara initially wonders whether Sasori is younger than him 406.
- Concealed identity: Wears a mask as Blackarachnia, keeping his true identity hidden even after becoming Kazekage 335 337.
- Sage transformation: Develops prominent dragon horns while blue-green chakra surrounds his body 309.
Personality
As a child, Sasori is considerate, proud of his inventions, and eager to share them with someone who takes his abilities seriously. His friendship with Anyo develops rapidly because Anyo treats him as a peer rather than merely a talented child 48 49.
His parents’ deaths leave him cold and emotionally withdrawn. Anyo and, later, Tenten become rare exceptions to that distance. Chiyo attributes his avoidance of Tenten to his inability to confront his feelings and his fear of hurting her 322 403.
Sasori’s loyalty to Anyo is exceptionally strong. He offers him money without hesitation, develops a poison contingency to prevent another Kikyo Mountain crisis, and openly declares that Anyo is the only person he does not suspect. He eventually recognizes that this reliance sometimes makes him overlook solutions he could devise himself 120 319 335 398.
His enthusiasm for invention coexists with considerable ruthlessness. He kidnaps a merchant’s daughter as leverage, considers turning Yamato into a puppet, and proposes destroying Kumogakure to prevent future resistance. Anyo repeatedly limits these impulses 271 397 473.
Sasori regards durable, reusable puppets as eternal art. To him, an explosion is only a fleeting effect; the machine capable of producing it repeatedly is the true artistic achievement 406.
Abilities & Skills
Puppet Technique and Mechanical Engineering
Sasori’s work develops from handmade childhood puppets into automated aircraft and large-scale mechanical forces 48 306 406.
- Controls numerous combat puppets simultaneously and equips them with blades, senbon, poison gas, and concealed traps 151 413.
- Produces lifelike puppets that can impersonate ninja; Deidara initially fails to recognize Sunagakure’s puppet guards 180 406.
- Uses even early experimental models for village construction, earning Blackarachnia considerable prestige in Sunagakure 318.
- Counters Kankuro’s Crow with a tiny hornet puppet, intercepting its weapons and gas bombs before taking control of the larger puppet 320.
- Designs fighter aircraft, missiles, transforming mecha, and specialized weapons based partly on Anyo’s ideas 205 370 406.
Poison and Antidote Development
Sasori begins experimenting with potent toxins in childhood and continues developing them as battlefield weapons 50 319.
- Creates an addictive, slow-acting poison intended for the Third Kazekage; Anyo helps refine it to increase lethality and concealment 120.
- Uses poison mist to incapacitate groups rather than kill them when ordered 151 166.
- Supplies explosive poison-filled puppets used in Sunagakure’s attack on Konoha 190.
- Cultivates Death Poison Valley’s poisonous organisms as a long-term contingency intended to exceed the Pot Poison Technique’s toxic range 319.
- Identifies the mandrake-leaf basis and limitations of Kankuro’s paralytic poison by smell 320.
Ryūmyaku / Dragon Vein Power
Sasori distributes Dragon Vein Power through his puppets rather than relying solely on his own body to contain it 178.
- Provides enormous chakra reserves and restores damaged puppets 175 178 205.
- Enhances the Third Kazekage puppet beyond its original chakra capacity 175 176.
- Powers a substitute puppet that can nearly reproduce its user’s abilities when supplied with their chakra 426.
- Limit: The energy is chaotic. Before distributing the overflow, Sasori approaches the point where his body can no longer safely contain it 178.
Soul-Based Puppet Control
Anyo initially performs the soul division and transfer; Sasori subsequently researches how to move that separated soul power between puppet vessels 182 307.
- Experiences the Third Kazekage puppet as another body, using its chakra and Magnet Release directly 182.
- Maintains a distant presence for communication, infiltration, and field operations 271 307 434.
- Survives the destruction of his Akatsuki puppet because its core scroll houses only his divided soul; Anyo retrieves that soul afterward 415.
- Conceals his real body behind proxies, a defense Anyo recommends against the Reaper Death Seal 335.
Ryūchi Cave Senjutsu
Sasori selects Ryūchi Cave’s teachings for their compatibility with his puppet army and masters them soon afterward 307 309.
- Finds Dragon Vein Power highly compatible with Ryūchi Cave senjutsu energy 309.
- Recognizes the senjutsu-like chakra in Sasuke’s cursed seal 317.
- Uses Sage Mode and interacting chakra sources as protection against genjutsu, but is still deceived by Itachi’s Kotoamatsukami 437.
- Considers combining Inorganic Reincarnation with his regenerating puppet army; the initial discussion presents this as his training objective 307.
Elemental Combat and Precision
- His humanlike Akatsuki proxy unleashes all five chakra natures through five scrolls 414.
- Controls four puppets to block combined ninjutsu and form precise water blades, defeating surrounding Mist ninja without killing them 434.
- Combines his giant mecha’s strength with Ōnoki’s ninjutsu to arrest falling meteors 491.

History
Childhood and Anyo’s Friendship
Sasori meets Anyo while Chiyo and Ebizo are away at war. When Anyo seeks help building a flying puppet, Sasori demonstrates his own small bird and joins the project. Their complementary strengths—Anyo’s ideas and Sasori’s craftsmanship—lead to a close friendship and extensive experimentation with puppets and poison 48 49 50.
His parents leave for the battlefield without interrupting his enjoyment of the Eagle Puppet. Both subsequently die at White Fang’s hands. Anyo initially cannot bring himself to tell Sasori, who complains of being lonely with his parents absent and Chiyo constantly occupied 50 63 64 119.
Assassination of the Third Kazekage
At their teenage reunion, Sasori reveals his plan to assassinate the Third Kazekage, whom he blames for the command failures that cost his parents their lives. Anyo agrees to help and returns his parents’ preserved bodies to him 119.
The pair refine Sasori’s poison in Chiyo’s laboratory, and Sasori personally serves it in the Kazekage’s food. Anyo ultimately kills the Kazekage in combat; Sasori checks that nobody knows where the leader went, helping conceal the death. He then leaves Sunagakure with Anyo 120 122.
Sasori proposes converting himself into a puppet to gain strength and eternity. Anyo rejects the idea, arguing that a living body offers greater potential. Sasori instead takes the Kazekage’s corpse to construct Ironhide 122 124.
Zero Organization and Control of Sunagakure
As a Zero Organization operative, Sasori fights alongside Kakuzu and abducts Mabui. He initially misunderstands Anyo’s purpose for capturing her and is ordered to provide an antidote and apologize before she is recruited 151 166 167.
His acquisition of Ryūmyaku power transforms his puppetry. The enhanced Third Kazekage puppet becomes central to Anyo’s scheme to control Sunagakure, while Sasori supplies a puppet army disguised as ninja 175 178 180.
After Anyo transfers part of his soul into the Kazekage puppet, Sasori can impersonate the village leader directly. He uses that authority to mislead Chiyo about the Zero Organization, presenting the Kazekage as its founder 182 203 204.
Sasori’s poison-filled puppets are deployed against Konoha during the war. Although he offers to abandon revenge if Anyo asks, Anyo does not stop their production. Later, Sasori reports that he controls Sunagakure’s Elder Council and has already poisoned Rasa 190 271.
Blackarachnia and Akatsuki Infiltration
Sasori and Kakuzu adopt a public cover story in which they defected after a failed attempt to assassinate the Third Kazekage. Within Sunagakure, Sasori operates as Blackarachnia, supposedly Chiyo’s trained puppeteer. A separate soul-controlled puppet joins Akatsuki through Konan’s recruitment 307.
After mastering senjutsu, he accompanies Anyo into the Chunin Exams under a Takigakure disguise and defeats Kankuro. During the ensuing invasion, he commands Sunagakure’s withdrawal and rescues Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro. By the subsequent negotiations, he is the Fifth Kazekage 309 320 335 337.
Village Reconstruction and Deidara’s Recruitment
Anyo leaves Sasori responsible for Sunagakure’s redevelopment, including roads, railways, and environmental improvements involving Gaara and Yamato. Sasori later credits Yamato with the greatest contribution to the village’s transformation 392 397.
Sasori arranges Deidara’s entry into Sunagakure, reveals his identity, and demonstrates the Mechanical Army. He invites his Akatsuki partner to join Anyo’s side rather than remain with Akatsuki 405 406.
His later encounter with Kakashi reawakens his resentment toward White Fang. Kakashi destroys his proxy’s puppets but is left critically injured and poisoned. Anyo recovers Sasori’s divided soul, and Sasori emerges calmer after understanding how his parents lost to White Fang’s chakra blade 414 415.
Summit, War, and Anyo’s Departure
Sasori uses the Zero Organization’s intelligence network to locate Itachi, but Kotoamatsukami defeats his precautions against genjutsu. He later attempts to rally the Five Kage against Akatsuki 435 437 448.
Reunited with his restored parents, Sasori must personally demonstrate that he has not abandoned his human body. During the war against Madara, he protects them from falling meteors, sends them underground to safety, and joins the Five Kage on the battlefield 464 491.
After the war, Anyo prepares to leave the shinobi world and entrusts Sky City and its God Tree to Sasori and Kaguya. Sasori accepts his departure and promises to catch up with him 517.
