Background / History
Meeting Anyo
Haku belonged to an Ice Release-bearing clan whose other members had died. Her experiences were tied to Kirigakure’s persecution of kekkei genkai users, and the Seven Ninja Swordsmen later recognized her as a surviving remnant of that clan 97 200 427.
Anyo first encountered her while using genjutsu to force a man to draw a map of Kirigakure. She intervened with ice needles, shielded the man, and offered to answer Anyo’s questions if he released the genjutsu. After carrying her away from the village, Anyo interrupted her attempt to introduce herself and gave her the name Haku, declaring that she should leave her old name behind with her former life 86.
Kirigakure Infiltration
Haku killed two Kirigakure gate guards with precise Ice Needles, helping Anyo lure Anbu into an ambush. After taking an agent’s identity, Anyo ordered her to hide while he entered the village alone. Her immediate fear was that he no longer wanted her; he reassured her that he intended to take her with him after the mission 87.
During the infiltration, Anyo falsely presented her as his older sister. He entered her mental space and coached her through Genji’s investigation. When Genji attacked without warning, her instinctive use of an ice mirror confirmed the Ice Release portion of Anyo’s story 91 92.
Haku subsequently became involved in Anyo’s confrontation with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen and suffered near-fatal injuries. After their escape and Anyo’s recovery, Kakuzu escorted them out of the Land of Water. Anyo brought her to his home in Konoha, where she met Konan 97 102.
Training and Anbu Service
During Anyo’s three-year sentence, Haku continued training with Konan. By his release, their late-night sparring displayed considerable command of Ice Release and Paper Release, with Haku holding the advantage in chakra 131.
She joined Anyo’s Anbu squad alongside Inoichi Yamanaka, Shisui Uchiha, and Yugao. Their training established particularly effective coordination between her Ice Release and Yugao’s swordsmanship. Her early battlefield performance nevertheless exposed a tendency to become distracted, drawing a sharp reprimand from Anyo 141 146.
After escaping Iwagakure ninja, Haku was targeted by Kirigakure Anbu. They trapped her in mist and repeatedly shattered the mirrors she used to evade their attacks. Anyo located her, destroyed her attackers with Susanoo, and treated her when she was close to death from injury and exhaustion 152.
Further training improved her effectiveness: against Killer B, she became her squad’s main fighting force, using Ice Release for both offense and defense. Anyo later used that encounter to rethink her role, emphasizing rear-line support over direct attacks 170 174 200.
Disappearance at Sea
Haku disappeared at sea during the war and was presumed dead. Anyo searched the ocean with his soul techniques and, overcome with grief, annihilated the surrounding Mist ninja. He later spoke of her death as something he had been powerless to prevent 232 282.
In reality, she had used Absolute Zero to preserve herself. Waves carried her to a Land of Snow ship, whose crew recovered her frozen body. The country’s king mistook her appearance and pure Ice Release for evidence that she was the Snow Queen, then built an altar using precious treasures to preserve her faint signs of life 375.
Rescue in the Land of Snow
More than a decade later, Dotō showed Anyo the supposed Goddess of Ice and Snow. Anyo immediately recognized Haku inside the enormous ice crystal, but discovered that breaking it would also shatter her ice-eroded body. Absolute Zero had frozen her soul as well, preventing him from reaching it with the Spirit Transformation Technique 374 375.
Anyo used Ryūchi Cave senjutsu to expand and dilute the ice until he could touch her. He then strengthened her body with Mount Myōboku senjutsu, restored its vitality with Shikkotsu Forest senjutsu, and fed her blood carrying his powerful life force. Haku awakened, and the surrounding crystal broke apart safely 375.
After their reunion, Haku welcomed Kikyo as another family member. She and Anyo became lovers without completing the wedding formalities he had prepared. Their subsequent examination of her altered chakra revealed that her long confinement had produced a unique form of cold-energy senjutsu 376 377.
Return to Family Life
Back in Konoha, Anyo formally introduced Haku to Mikoto, who welcomed her and arranged a room for her. Haku later confirmed that she was pregnant and chose Little White as the baby’s name, which Anyo accepted regardless of the child’s sex 381 390.
She remained attentive to the household, alerting Tsunade when Kikyo disappeared. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, she quietly followed Anyo after his confrontation with Konan and Yugao and helped calm him by reaffirming her unconditional support 438 439 481.
Appearance
- Hair and complexion: Long black hair, a flawless face, and skin described as purer than snow 374.
- Preserved youth: Her decade-plus confinement in ice leaves her youthful appearance unchanged 376.
- Clothing: Wears an Anbu uniform during service and an aqua-blue dress when formally introduced to Mikoto 200 381.
Personality
Haku is gentle, accommodating, and deeply uncomfortable with war. She would prefer an ordinary life, but believes that becoming an ordinary person would leave her unable to keep pace with Anyo. Her dislike of fighting initially prevents her from fully developing her considerable talent 170 182.
Her devotion to Anyo is not dependent on his appearance, strength, or wealth. She prioritizes remaining beside him over ceremony or social expectations, readily cares for his injuries, and reassures him when their long separation leaves him afraid of losing her again 146 376 481.
That gentleness does not prevent her from killing. She follows Anyo’s signals to eliminate enemies and witnesses, and explicitly promises to support him even if his choices are wrong. Her loyalty provides him with emotional security, but does not function as a moral restraint 87 184 481.
Abilities & Skills
Ice Release
Haku possesses genuine Ice Release as a kekkei genkai. Anyo distinguishes it from the Land of Snow ninja’s imitation techniques, which exploit the local climate 86 372.
- Precision attacks: Ice Needles can pierce throats with sufficient speed and accuracy to kill before guards react 87 184.
- Battlefield suppression: Freezing effects slow enemies and can disrupt their chakra and blood circulation, creating openings for allied attackers 170 200.
- Offensive repertoire: Uses Secret Technique: Thousand Flying Water Needles of Death, Ice Release: Twin Dragon Storm Kill, and Ice Release: Dragon-Breaking Fierce Tiger 170.
- Practical control: Can turn her fingers into sharp ice blades to cut away clothing while treating injuries 146.
- Limitations: Her combat awareness initially lags behind her raw ability. Anyo therefore encourages concealed support and avoids exposing her to unnecessary frontline fighting 146 200.
Ice Mirrors and Defensive Techniques
- Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystal: Instinctively forms a mirror to block Genji’s surprise attack 92.
- Mirror movement: Shifts between Ice Crystal Mirrors to evade attackers; sustained assaults can break the mirrors and overwhelm her defense 152.
- Secret Technique: Ice Rock Hall Nothing: Creates an ellipsoidal ice wall to block Anyo’s lightning-infused attack during training 170.
- Ice Armor: Develops protective armor modeled after the Raikage’s Lightning Armor; Anyo considers its defensive power remarkable 200.
Ice Release: Absolute Zero
Developed with Anyo’s guidance, Absolute Zero releases a freezing stream of air capable of instantly encasing him in ice 200.
- Immediate freezing: Immobilizes Anyo during its first test, though he breaks free using flames 200.
- Lingering impairment: Slows chakra circulation and blood flow even after the victim escapes the ice 200.
- Self-preservation: Keeps Haku alive after her disappearance at sea, with additional preservation supplied by the Land of Snow’s altar 375.
- Soul freezing: Prevents Anyo’s soul power from entering her body 375.
- Danger to the user: Prolonged confinement erodes her body until simply breaking the ice would destroy her as well 375.
Cold-Energy Senjutsu
Haku’s prolonged exposure to extreme cold produces a new senjutsu chakra, combining the sealed natural energy with her physical and spiritual energies 376 377.
- Energy storage: Her chakra forms internal ice crystals that store cold energy 378.
- Shared control: Helps Anyo bear the burden of cold energy while he stabilizes it 378.
- Contribution to Anyo’s development: The cold energy provides the separation and stability he needs to unite his other three senjutsu types 378.
- Documented scope: Anyo identifies her potential to become a fourth Sage, but the passages do not establish a completed Sage Mode transformation for Haku 376 378.
Injury Treatment
- Practical experience: Reports having practiced injury treatment for three years 146.
- Field care: Removes damaged clothing, applies bandages, and tends Anyo while he recovers 146.
Mist Concealment
- Quietly follows Anyo without openly revealing herself, then appears as wisps of mist freeze and gather into her figure. The technique is not named 481.
