Background / History

Previous Life and Academy Years

Anyo retains memories of a previous life, including skilled use of very short blades and partial knowledge of Naruto. He remembers the broad plot and the finale, but not every supporting character. His soul survived death and a prolonged existence in darkness before crossing into the shinobi world 7 10 18 20 64 129.

Orphaned in his new life, he establishes an independent household and enrolls at the Ninja Academy. Mikoto, who knew him after his parents’ deaths, checks on him and is reassured by his independence. Anyo later tells her that she was the first person he saw after arriving in this world 70 286.

At school, he deliberately conceals his strength. He befriends and spars with Minato, partly because he knows Minato will become the Fourth Hokage. His early theft of the Scroll of Seals also draws scrutiny: during his graduation examination, he suspects that Orochimaru or the Third Hokage discovered the theft and chose to observe him rather than expose him 5 7 9.

White Fang’s Student and the Second Shinobi World War

After witnessing White Fang’s extraordinary swordsmanship, Anyo becomes his student. White Fang teaches him the Thirteen Forms and emphasizes speed, precision, and the resolve to fight to the death. Anyo resolves not merely to inherit the style, but eventually to develop his own 7 10 11.

Anyo annihilates a Sand ninja force using darkness-based genjutsu and a physically punishing sword strike. White Fang reports the feat to the Third Hokage, whose praise is tempered by concern that Anyo might become another Madara Uchiha 15 17.

Dan Katō’s explanation of the Spirit Transformation Technique leads Anyo to investigate his own soul. He succeeds, but White Fang immediately warns him that leaving his physical body defenseless could make the technique fatal to its user 17 18 19.

His wartime training expands beyond swordsmanship. He studies puppetry under Ebizo in Sunagakure, learns medicine and poison research under Tsunade, and receives promotions to chunin, jonin, and Anbu squad captain 27 48 54 57.

Prison and Cooperation with Orochimaru

Following White Fang’s death, Anyo is imprisoned on charges that include killing ninja from his own village. Shinku accepts part of the responsibility for his actions, helping reduce the sentence from five years to three. Anyo later identifies Heiye as the first person he targeted in revenge for his teacher 108 109 449.

Orochimaru secretly brings him into an underground laboratory, where they create a clone to occupy his cell during routine inspections. Anyo spends much of the sentence researching souls and toxins rather than enduring the deprivation imagined by his visitors. Tsunade also helps him leave the prison temporarily and later spends two months imprisoned under his identity 107 108 116 131.

During this period, Anyo studies his Mangekyō Sharingan and explores soul division. He refuses Orochimaru’s offer to resurrect White Fang through Impure World Reincarnation 108 111.

After Orochimaru’s defection, Anyo declines to leave Konoha with him. He values the people still living there and recognizes that neither man would willingly surrender ultimate authority to the other. Instead, they formally agree to cooperate as independent partners 130.

Third Shinobi World War

Anyo assembles a five-person team consisting of himself, Haku, Yugao, Shisui, and Inoichi. He trains them together before leading them to the Iwagakure front 141.

Fighting Ōnoki exposes his limited ranged options. Unable to learn Flying Thunder God despite Minato’s instruction, Anyo develops Okatana Swordsmanship and strengthens his Lightning Swordsmanship instead. His later encounters with Ōnoki demonstrate how greatly his ranged blade control has improved 145 147 149 226.

His relationship with Tsunade becomes romantic, and they promise to marry and leave Konoha after the war. Their plans unravel as his command decisions and willingness to accept casualties provoke increasingly bitter disputes 156 235.

At Kikyo Mountain Base, Anyo orders Yugao to remove Tsunade despite her vow never to forgive him if he does so. He remains to face the Four-Nation Allied Forces; his later account describes confronting more than twenty thousand troops. During the fighting, inspiration from Tobirama’s swordsmanship produces the Weapon Control Technique 241 250 252 376.

After the war, he returns to Konoha exhausted and injured, only to learn that Tsunade has left without a message 259.

Nine-Tails Rampage and Reconstruction

During the Nine-Tails Rampage, Anyo attempts to reverse Minato’s injuries but exhausts his Mangekyō and loses his sight. When the Reaper claims a sacrifice, he substitutes Kushina’s soul for Minato’s, takes Minato’s soul into his own body, and brings the bodies to Orochimaru. Hashirama cells and Nine-Tails chakra keep Minato’s body alive, though initially not under Minato’s control 283 284.

Anyo subsequently transfers Minato’s soul into the puppet Bumblebee. Before withdrawing from Konoha, he makes arrangements for Mikoto’s survival and leaves a Wood Release Clone to respond to the anticipated Uchiha massacre 285 286 287.

Seeking a way to survive his own deteriorating condition, he trains in Shikkotsu Forest. He eventually combines all three Great Sage Lands’ senjutsu and begins a dangerous reconstruction inside a corrosive pool. Katsuyu and his Wood Release Clone intervene when his life signs weaken; Hashirama estimates that the process could take at least ten years 288 290 302 471.

Return to Konoha and Family Reunions

Anyo returns with a younger-looking, reconstructed body, although his strength has not fully recovered. He participates in the Chunin Exams and defeats Kiba without drawing his blade. At this stage, Sunagakure’s Kazekage is already one of his people, and he offers Orochimaru assistance against Hiruzen 307 311 324.

Kurenai recognizes him and confronts him over his disappearance. He reveals his weakened condition, and she reaffirms her childhood love for him. They later marry in a ceremony modeled on customs from his previous life 339 389.

He also reunites with Tsunade and meets their daughter, Kikyo. After finding Mikoto living in isolation, he recognizes that concealing her from danger has not necessarily made her happy. Mikoto eventually returns to the Uchiha grounds and undertakes their renovation as Anyo’s home 345 360 364.

Anyo’s reunion with Haku ends a separation lasting more than a decade. Haku subsequently announces her pregnancy, and they agree to name the baby Little White 376 390.

Zero Organization and the Final Conflicts

Zero expands covertly across the major nations, while Anyo’s personal alliances give him influence over several Kage. He completes a collection of all nine tailed beasts’ chakra with Orochimaru and prepares to attend the Five Kage Summit 394 431 443.

His relationship with Konan reaches a crisis when he admits that he originally accepted her as a student to obtain the Rinnegan. He nevertheless maintains that she remains his student and someone close to him. Separately, he advances plans against the daimyo, agreeing at White Fang’s request to spare the Land of Fire’s ruler through a staged death 478 480.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he withdraws injured allies from Madara’s battlefield and confronts Obito with the living Rin. He later emerges with black Rinnegan and faces Madara using both dōjutsu and the swordsmanship he has pursued throughout his life 494 500 505.

In the finale, Anyo discovers that Yugao and Konan have gone to the moon. He travels there with Kaguya, defeats Toneri, has Kaguya appoint Yugao princess of the moon, and reunites with both women 521.

Appearance

• Earlier appearance: White hair becomes distinctive enough for Kushina to replace her nickname “Short Hair” with “White Hair” 116.
• Reconstructed body: Long, snow-white hair, a youthful appearance, sharply defined features, and a naturally fragrant body. His features continue becoming more refined as his cells grow more active 345 350 389.
• Wedding appearance: Cuts his hair short, changes it from white to black through senjutsu, and wears a black suit 389.
• Later transformation: His long hair regrows pale blue, and he floats naturally in the air. His Rinnegan are black rather than Madara’s purple 500 505.
• Anbu presentation: Frequently wears a mask, valuing the anonymity it provides and its usefulness in concealing his Uchiha identity 61.

Personality

Anyo is calculating, secretive, and comfortable manipulating how others perceive him. He hides his Academy ability, cultivates a friendship with the future Fourth Hokage, and makes himself look filthy before prison visits so that visitors will not discover his comfortable laboratory life 5 7 108.

His central ambitions are power and personal freedom. He wants strength comparable to or greater than Hashirama and Madara, then intends to abolish the division of the Five Great Nations. He regards political fragmentation as the root of war and rejects the idea that persuasion alone can produce lasting peace 57 129 250 480.

His loyalties are intensely personal rather than institutional. White Fang’s death destroys much of his attachment to Konoha, yet he delays leaving because of the people he loves. He refuses to become the Uchiha clan’s savior simply because of shared ancestry, while going to considerable lengths to protect Mikoto 109 130 230 285.

Anyo openly acknowledges his self-centeredness and does not promise romantic exclusivity. At the same time, he is patient with students, deeply affected by prolonged separations, and unwilling to forget injuries done to those close to him. His protection can become controlling, as shown by his forced evacuation of Tsunade and his instructions to Yugao to intimidate boys who approach Kikyo 79 241 339 364 376.

Swordsmanship

• An experienced short-blade user before receiving formal training, Anyo builds his fighting style on White Fang’s fundamentals 7 10 11.
• He continually combines techniques rather than treating them as isolated moves; by his battle with Pain, transitions among his eight major sword arts are smooth even though their complete fusion remains unfinished 159 281.
• His preferred approach emphasizes creating an opening and finishing the opponent with a decisive strike 170.
