First Appearance Chapter 105 105

Background / History

Giyu was injured by the first demon that attacked him during his Final Selection. By the time he became the Water Pillar, Sosuke judged him capable of clearing every demon on Fujikasane Mountain alone 311.

Giyu sent Tanjiro Kamado to former Water Pillar Urokodaki Sakonji for training. He knew that Tanjiro’s sister Nezuko was a demon, but did not kill her 184.

Appearance

Giyu’s calm gaze and expressionless face can make him seem intimidating or unapproachable 105 106 153.

  • Eyes — described as calm as still water 105.
  • Hair — kept so neatly that Sosuke notices not a strand out of place 527.

Personality

Giyu speaks little and is often mistaken for cold or aloof. Sosuke instead finds that he can be unsure how to express himself: on one visit, Giyu waits outside the Hammer Hut because he does not know how to say hello 106 527. His concern is similarly quiet. He brings Sosuke medicine after an injury and leaves rather than interrupting a private moment between Sosuke and Kanae 412 156.

He is direct when duty requires it. He points out that an early intervention would expose the Pillars’ preparations, and later accepts command of a seven-day demon hunt without hesitation 549 1098.

Abilities & Skills

Water Breathing

Giyu demonstrates all ten Water Breathing forms for Sosuke’s blade design, repeating forms that Sosuke cannot clearly record 107.

  • First Form: Water Surface Slash — a fast, level strike that Giyu aims at Sosuke’s neck to open a sparring match 154.

Swordsmanship and training

  • Giyu teaches Sosuke chiefly through repeated, demanding spars rather than verbal advice. After their training, Sosuke can evade most of his slashes 156 157.
  • He helps train Tanjiro and Inosuke at the Hammer Hut. Once the younger pair is exhausted, Giyu spars with Sosuke until he reaches his own limit 953.
  • During the fight against Kokushibo, Giyu severs the demon’s head and immediately counters when Kokushibo survives and attacks again 594.

Cooking

  • Giyu prepares food that Sosuke praises for its appearance, smell, and taste. He also cooks the right amount of rice for a gathering of Pillars 527 536.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade — Giyu initially carries a well-maintained but heavily worn sword. Sosuke forges him a replacement with a pronounced curve; when Giyu draws it, the blade turns ocean blue with red streaks, and holding it brings him a calming coolness 106 116.
  • Water Stone–modified blade — a later modification produces a controlled, circling current of water when Giyu uses it 951 952.

Relationships

  • Tetsu no Sosuke — his swordsmith, former trainee, and later sparring partner. Giyu gives him medicine and welcomes the challenge posed by Sosuke’s improvement 105 153 412 953.
  • Tanjiro Kamado — his junior apprentice. Giyu directs him to Urokodaki, later trains alongside him, and invites him to stay at his home 184 860 953 957.
  • Kanae Kocho — a fellow Pillar who initially reads Giyu as aloof, then revises her impression after seeing him cooperate with Sosuke 105 107.
  • Shinobu Kocho — a fellow Demon Slayer with whom Giyu fights in coordinated operations 576 725.

Story Role / Major Arcs

  • Battle against Kokushibo — Giyu joins the Pillars’ coordinated assault and apparently finishes Kokushibo by decapitation. After the battle lasts until dawn, he voices concern that Muzan may be even harder to contain 576 594 599.
  • Attack at his residence — trapped in a demon’s Spiritual World, Giyu escapes as its control weakens and kills its true body, saving the others caught in its layered illusion 1094.
  • Final demon hunt — Sosuke entrusts Giyu with leading Tanjiro and two others to join the Hashira and hunt demons for seven days, leaving Muzan for later 1098.
