Background / History

Training at Mount Sagiri

Giyu Tomioka sends Tanjiro to Urokodaki Sakonji, where his demon sister, Nezuko, also stays. When Kanae questions why Nezuko has been spared, Tanjiro steps forward and insists that she will not hurt anyone 184.

Sosuke first meets him chopping firewood outside Urokodaki’s home. The encounter troubles Sosuke, who had unsuccessfully searched for Tanjiro’s family and hoped to change the boy’s path. Tanjiro welcomes Sosuke and Kanae warmly, unaware of the guilt behind Sosuke’s reaction 146 183.

Alongside his mountain training, Tanjiro cooks for the household and helps Sosuke assemble an Automaton Puppet. He treats the assembly like a game, delighting in each completed section 186 189 190 196.

Supporting Demon-Cure Research

Sosuke later requests Nezuko’s blood for research that might help restore demons to humanity. Tanjiro first checks that the amount will not harm her, then supplies the sample himself 712.

When he eventually meets Tamayo, learning about her work immediately excites him. Even so, he hesitates when she asks to examine Nezuko and looks to Sosuke for reassurance 885.

Final Selection

During Final Selection on Fujikasane Mountain, Tanjiro notices a red glow and fears that a fire could threaten the other candidates. Although he expects the Corps to handle it, he cannot ignore the danger. He recruits Kanao and pulls the frightened Zenitsu along to investigate 846.

The group discovers a pig-headed human fighting a suspected demon. Tanjiro rushes to intervene, but the confrontation brings them before Akaza. He prepares to charge until Sosuke arrives, stops him, and orders the younger fighters to watch from safety 847 849.

When Akaza survives decapitation and transforms further, Tanjiro accepts Sosuke’s order to retreat rather than become a burden. He and the others later find Sosuke watching the sunrise, witness his hair turn white, and see him collapse 853 865.

Learning at the Hammer Hut

After passing the trial, Tanjiro visits the Hammer Hut with Nezuko to obtain a blade from Sosuke. He remains modest about his achievement, saying that he still has a long way to go 873.

Sosuke teaches him Meditation and permits him to teach Zenitsu, subject to restrictions against further sharing or recording the method. When Zenitsu subsequently reports another person inside his heart who wants to consume him, Tanjiro alerts Sosuke and asks whether the training could have unexpected side effects 877 881 882.

On a later visit with Giyu and Inosuke, Tanjiro helps test Sosuke’s stone-enhanced weapons. He stays for training, learns to coordinate with Inosuke, and agrees to send Sosuke reports on his modified blade’s performance. Spiritual World and Later Events

Inside a deceptive Spiritual World, Tanjiro follows an apparent Nezuko into a room that seems to extend endlessly. Her changing scent makes him suspicious, and her explanation that the place temporarily restores her humanity convinces him that she is an impostor. Despite recognizing the deception, he is caught by her attack and later reaches Sosuke injured 1068 1078.

Sosuke bandages him and warns him not to trust the apparent corpses of their companions. Tanjiro eventually questions the world’s impossible scale as Sosuke attacks an enormous eye in the sky. When the illusion breaks, he finds himself in the courtyard, holding hands in a circle with Sosuke, Shinobu, Zenitsu, and Inosuke 1078 1079 1082.

Afterward, Tanjiro helps Sosuke retrieve medicine while they maintain the circle. He later learns of Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s death and is present among the fighters assembling ahead of the confrontation with Muzan 1085 1097 1111.
