Background / History

Shinobu is Kanae Kocho’s younger sister and lives and works at the Butterfly Estate. During the confrontation with Doma, Upper Moon Two, she withdraws on Kanae’s instruction rather than interfere with a battle beyond her ability. Afterward, she feels guilty about contributing little, while acknowledging that Tetsu no Sosuke saved her life 50 61.

A later mission leaves Shinobu injured and the other members of her team dead or badly hurt. While she recovers, the Butterfly Estate loses its principal caregiver for incoming patients. Sosuke brings her medicine despite their mutual irritation and begins forging a poison-bearing Nichirin Blade suited to her fighting style 97 98 108.

Shinobu continues training and fighting alongside Sosuke. In a mountain battle, her poison weakens a demon before five rapid thrusts finish it, although the effort leaves her unconscious and feverish 125 127 129 130. Her inability to help more against Kokushibo later troubles her deeply. She trains for months afterward and ultimately takes an opening to strike him with Dance of the Bee Stinger: True Drag 395 396 402.

After becoming the Insect Pillar, Shinobu also works on the Corps’ wider use of poison. She studies how wisteria affects the Twelve Demon Moons, collaborates with Tamayo on demon research, and helps care for Sosuke during his own medical troubles 619 685 874 907.

Appearance

Shinobu is petite—described as about a meter and a half tall—but can carry a commanding presence 421.

Personality

Shinobu is fiercely protective of Kanae. She initially watches Sosuke’s growing closeness with her sister with suspicion, interrupts their private time, and challenges him whenever she thinks Kanae might be hurt or excluded 68 83 279. Once Kanae and Sosuke decide to marry, Shinobu accepts their choice after asking directly about the sudden decision 420 422.

Her arguments with Sosuke become a familiar form of family banter, but she trusts him in combat and shows distress when he is gravely injured 568 596 659. She also guards her independence: when he tries to arrange a match for her, she insists that choosing a partner must depend on her own feelings 528.

Shinobu’s self-developed sword style compensates for her limited physical strength by using speed, thrusts, and poison rather than relying on decapitation 69 129 138.

• Her thrusts are fast enough for Sosuke to choose her as the concealed attacker in an ambush plan 383.
