Weapon Sharpness Levels record the quality of individual blades forged or restored by Tetsu no Sosuke; they are not upgrades to one single Nichirin Blade.

Characteristics

Nichirin Blades are forged from Scarlet Sand Iron and Scarlet Stone Ore, materials that absorb sunlight and grant the weapons their demon-killing nature 15. A demon can regenerate severe injuries, but decapitation with a Nichirin Blade destroys it permanently 323.

Their form is not fixed. A smith may alter a blade’s length, curve, width, weight, guard, flexibility, and auxiliary functions to match a wielder’s body and swordsmanship 12 17.

• The blades are valuable Corps weapons and are personally delivered to their intended Demon Hunters rather than casually disposed of 442.
• Pillar blades may bear the engraving “Slay Demons” 7.
• A wielder’s grip can reveal a blade’s changing coloration and distinctive feel, as seen with Kanae’s clear-blue blade and Giyu’s sea-blue blade threaded with red 25 58.
• Sosuke’s personal Nichirin Blade displays the red coloration associated with his Breath of the Sun 76 197.

Sunblaze / Sunflare

Sunblaze, later referred to as Sunflare, is a forging attribute associated with a Nichirin Blade’s ability to suppress demon regeneration. It is principally increased during impurity removal through Gale Sun, a hammering method driven by the Breath of the Sun 33 42.

• A blade with 91 Sunblaze demonstrated regeneration-suppressing potential, though its effect was expected to be less effective against larger wounds 33 43.
• Sosuke initially found 100 Sunflare to be an apparent limit: attempts to exceed it caused the blade to fail and lose its other attributes 109 375.
• After his later breakthrough, the Golden Ratio Scale could inject Sunflare up to 180 points, though Sosuke continued seeking a way beyond that limit 394.
• The attribute depends on both the smith’s skill and focus; the Heavenly Crafting Hammer improves efficiency but does not replace craftsmanship 43.

Forging Methods and Enhancements

Bloodforging Method

The Bloodforging Method merges a blade with a drop of its intended owner’s blood during forging 9.

• The owner experiences the weapon as an extension of their body, with its weight adjusted to suit them regardless of its actual mass 9 25.
• It preserves a natural sense of momentum even when the weapon feels weightless 146.
• Individual wielders receive different effects:
  • Kanae’s blade reduces her stamina consumption 58.
  • Giyu’s blade produces a cool, calming sensation that steadies his mind 58.
  • Mitsuri reported a sensation of bodily lightness 76.
• Sosuke theorized that naming and cherishing a blade may extend its Bloodforging-derived effect even when it remains sheathed, based on Kyojuro Rengoku’s bond with Enkiri 108 224.
• Bloodforging cannot be combined with the Poison Forging Method; blood applied to poison-forged material simply vanishes without effect 54.

Poison Forging Method

The Poison Forging Method infuses iron with toxins during forging 49.

• Poison-forged material releases toxic gases while being worked, requiring attention to wind direction and ventilation 49.
• Any wound that breaks a demon’s skin allows the blade’s poison to spread through its body 54.
• Poison affinity reduces Sunblaze adhesion, forcing a trade-off between anti-regeneration power and toxin delivery 54.
• Shinobu Kocho’s poison-forged Nichirin Blade reached only 36 Sunblaze, compared with Obanai’s 91-point blade 54.

Restoration Art

Restoration Art allows severely worn or damaged Nichirin Blades to be restored and improved beyond their original condition 109.

• Sosuke’s first Nichirin repair restored a snapped Pillar blade’s hardness and sharpness perfectly 9.
• Repairs can amplify a weapon’s inherent attributes, but do not increase its Sunflare attribute 109.
• The Artisan’s Toolkit permits compact, temporary field repairs, though a blade still requires proper restoration after battle 109.

Attribute Stone Embedding

After acquiring the Embedding Technique Guide, Sosuke began embedding special stones into Nichirin Blades to add externalized elemental effects 396 460.

• An initial Flame Stone attempt destroyed both the stone and the Nichirin Blade 460.
• A successful Flame Stone embedding produces flames when activated through a Breathing Technique 460.
• Embedded effects can be consciously activated or suppressed by the wielder 476 479.
• A Water Stone allowed Giyu’s blade to manifest a controlled water stream, while Tanjiro’s modified blade could spout water during Breathing Technique use 476 479.
• Shinobu’s Wind Stone modification scatters poison on the wind, expanding the reach and unpredictability of her attacks 500.

Production and Distribution

Sosuke attempted to share part of his Breath-enhanced forging method with the Swordsmith Village so other smiths could create Nichirin Blades that suppress demon regeneration 38.

• Only three smiths initially succeeded in using the technique 73.
• Each successful blade required roughly seven days to half a month of labor, followed by a comparable recovery period for the exhausted smith 73.
• The results varied between smiths: identical wounds regenerated at different rates depending on which blade inflicted them 73.
• Sosuke later proposed templates that could be assembled and distributed to improve the Demon Slayer Corps’ overall strength 222.
• The Village Chief and Kotetsu began planning mass production based on Sosuke’s blueprints 224.

Historical Specimen

A mechanism-filled music box recovered by Sosuke, Kanae, and Yuichiro contained a deliberately forged half-length Nichirin Blade 472.

• Despite its short length, the relic exceeded Sosuke’s weapons in both sharpness and strength 472.
• Accompanying illustrated cloth recorded its creation, including thousands of hammer strikes and an edge said to be able to kill flies from an inch away 472.
