Background / History

Nichirin Blade production is an established responsibility of Swordsmith Village. Apprentices practice with ordinary iron because they are not yet qualified to use the specialized materials. Sosuke’s first sword, Sun, impresses both Chintetsu and Kanae, but remains an ordinary-iron practice weapon rather than a Nichirin Blade 1 2 8 11.

Kanae’s request for a custom sword gives Sosuke his first opportunity to work with Nichirin material. Chintetsu requires him to repair her existing blade before accepting the commission. Despite the sword being snapped in two, heavily worn, and curled along parts of its edge, Sosuke successfully restores it after two sleepless nights 11 13 18.

After developing regeneration-suppressing blades, Sosuke sends part of his forging technique to Chintetsu for other smiths to test. Only three smiths initially reproduce the effect. Their blades are weaker than Sosuke’s, and each forging requires seven days to half a month, followed by a similar recovery period—making mass production impractical 75 146.

Sosuke later expands his commissions beyond the Pillars to exceptional Corps members recommended by Kagaya. Their requests provide new design ideas, while his research progresses from improving Sunblaze through forging to embedding special stones in finished weapons 755 827 921 949.

Appearance and Known Designs

• Wielder-responsive colors: Kanae’s custom blade turns clear blue after briefly displaying red threads; Giyu’s turns ocean blue with red streaks 50 116.
• Sun Breathing coloration: Sosuke’s personal blade becomes a vivid, flame-like red. Kokushibo recognizes its color as a sign of Breath of the Sun 151 393.
• Custom shapes: Designs range from conventional swords to butterfly-wing blades, flexible swords, and a chained axe-and-ball weapon 50 109 791.

Solar Demon-Slaying Power

Nichirin material contains the sun’s power, allowing a blade to kill demons through decapitation 29 646 647.

• An ordinary kitchen knife can sever a demon’s limb, but the demon regenerates; Nichirin decapitation ends Sosuke’s demonstration fight 646.
• Solar material does not guarantee that every strike penetrates a powerful demon. One slayer’s attack only breaks the skin of a demon’s arm 464.
• Muzan survives Sosuke’s Nichirin attack through his hand, head, and torso, healing almost immediately despite feeling pain from the Sun Breathing strike 1100.

Sunblaze and Regeneration Suppression

Sosuke’s use of Breath of the Sun during forging adds the Sunblaze attribute. His enhanced blades inhibit demon regeneration, unlike the basic killing property shared by Nichirin Blades 29 646.

• One measured use of Gale Sun adds three Sunblaze points during impurity removal 84.
• Against Doma, minor wounds fail to heal while a severed arm regenerates quickly. Sosuke theorizes that insufficient Sunblaze explains the difference, but does not establish it as fact 60 65.
• Faster forging techniques shorten the stages in which Sunblaze can be added. Maximizing the attribute may also unbalance a weapon and introduce a dangerous flaw 65.

Bloodforging and Owner-Specific Enhancements

The Bloodforging Method fuses the intended owner’s blood into the blade through special hammering. In that owner’s hands, the weapon feels like an extension of their body 18.

• Apparent weight reduction: A blade can feel almost weightless to its owner without losing its actual mass. Shinobu finds Kanae’s sword heavier than her own, despite Kanae’s experience of lighter movement 18 60.
• Individual benefits: Kanae receives warmth through the hilt and reduced stamina loss; Giyu experiences a cool sensation that calms and steadies his thoughts 60 116.
• Component limit: Bloodforging a blade does not lighten its attached guard, hilt, or hammer sheath. Those components require separate treatment 151.
• Naming and care: Rengoku reports benefits from Enkiri merely by carrying it. Sosuke suspects that naming and attentive maintenance deepen the bond, rather than treating this explanation as proven 215 447.

Poison Forging

The Poison Forging Method locks a chosen poison into iron as the material cools 97 98.

• Shinobu’s sharpened blade tip introduces poison when it penetrates skin 108.
• Sosuke states that each hit doubles the accumulated poison 620.
• Poison-forged material cannot be Bloodforged: added blood disappears, making the method ineffective 108.

Embedded Stones

Special stones add properties beyond those obtained through conventional forging 921 923.

• Inlay process: Heat cannot complete the inlay. At the final refining stage, the stone is immersed in water to form a protective layer, then pressed against the weapon; it gradually fuses with the blade within a day 949.
• Directed effects: Giyu produces a controlled, dragon-like current of water. Sosuke shapes his flames into an armored giant, but spreading them too thin weakens the effect 951.
• Wind Stone: Shinobu’s modified blade is intended to carry poison through the air unseen and undetected 999.
• Resonance: Rengoku discovers that synchronizing his breathing with the embedded stone lets him channel flames without drawing his sword 1040.

Handling and Maintenance

• Repair: Heavenly Craft: Repair can restore worn weapons and strengthen their existing traits, though Sunblaze remains an exception 109 217.
• Inspection: Sosuke calls a Nichirin Blade a swordsman’s lifeline and asks Kanae to bring any damaged blade to him immediately 169.
• Training wear: Sosuke supplies an ordinary practice sword for his spar with Giyu to avoid wearing down valuable Nichirin Blades 154.
• Hammer sheath: Sosuke initially stores his blade inside an Iron Hammer. After that hammer is destroyed, he builds a sturdier, Bloodforged Hammer Sword assembly; a later lost Hammer Sheath is temporarily replaced with a conventional scabbard 151 257 292 758.
