Background / History
Tang San transmigrated into the Douluo world and grew up in Holy Soul Village. His father, Tang Hao, was a neglectful drunk, while his mother, Ah Yin, was absent during his childhood. Lu Ren’s account of Tang San caring for his father—and receiving greater attention only after awakening both inherited Martial Souls—is explicitly confirmed by Tang San’s reaction 317 323.
He eventually ascended to the Divine Realm and became a legendary figure revered by mortal Soul Masters. Ten thousand years later, his legacy remained central to the Tang Sect and Shrek Academy, while he occupied one of the Divine Realm’s highest offices 3 140 263.
His influence also extended into the Holy Spirit Cult. According to Lu Ren’s explanation, the cult repackaged Tang San’s deeds under the identity of its Holy Emperor. Its lower- and middle-ranking Evil Soul Masters unknowingly worshipped Tang San, directing genuine Faith Power to him in the Divine Realm 140.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Long sea-blue hair and deeply azure eyes 214 258.
- Features: A handsome, ordinarily gentle and refined face; repeated failures expose increasingly open anger and malice 214 217.
- Clothing: Magnificent blue robes with flowing, waterlike gleams resembling an ocean woven into the fabric 258.
- Divine manifestations: Sea God power dyes surrounding clouds ocean blue; Asura God transformation envelops him in blood-red light and a murderous aura 217 317.
- Battle armor: Wears blood-colored Asura armor during the confrontation with Lu Ren 318 322.
Personality
Tang San habitually presents himself as gentle, composed, and courteous. When confronted by the Destruction God King over his interference in the mortal world, he quickly replaces his triumphant expression with a refined smile and carefully performed confusion. He uses a similarly reassuring manner when attempting to talk Huo Yuhao out of attacking him 218 309.
Beneath that presentation, he treats mortal affairs as a board on which he moves pieces. He plans Huo Yuhao’s education, marriage, and political role, values Shrek’s followers as a source of Faith Power, and considers using his daughter as a lure to justify action against Lu Ren 214 230.
His contempt for Lu Ren coexists with growing fear. He dismisses him as a mortal “ant,” yet later acknowledges that Lu Ren’s abilities—especially Mahoraga—made him feel an unprecedented threat. He is also capable of tactical restraint: against Huo Yuhao, he endures a beating in his more survivable Sea God state rather than immediately committing to an Asura God offensive 258 286 310.
Defeat ultimately breaks his confidence. After exhausting every resource, he admits that Lu Ren surpassed him in both planning and strength. In his final vision, he chooses the comfort of the past over returning to battle, even knowing that Xiao Wu is still waiting for him 323.
Abilities & Skills
Dual Godhood
Tang San holds the Sea God and Asura God positions and switches between their corresponding forms 263 310.
- Sea God form: Emphasizes survival, healing, control, and trident techniques. Sea God’s Light repairs wounds and forms defensive barriers 310.
- Asura God form: Emphasizes killing power, blood-red sword attacks, and corrosive malevolent force capable of disrupting Lu Ren’s Cursed Energy 310 318.
- Weapon transformation: His Golden Trident changes into the Asura Demon Sword when he assumes Asura God form 317 319.
- Shared authority: Xiao Wu can borrow his Sea God position 298.
Golden Trident Techniques
| Technique | Form | Effect and demonstrated limit |
|---|---|---|
| Unfixed Storm | First | Isolates a target within a severed pocket of space. Huo Yuhao escapes using Asura’s Eye; Tang San later uses it to briefly restrain Lu Ren before his final detonation 310 322. |
| Thousand Years of Emptiness, White Clouds Drift | Second | Produces explosive, cloudlike trident shadows and interferes with space-time, making an opponent experience the sensation of endless years. Huo Yuhao tears through its clouds with Piercing Blood 310. |
| One-Way Journey | Third | Throws the trident with immense force. Huo Yuhao’s Dragon Breath overpowers it and drives it back toward Tang San 310. |
| Sun of the Sea | Tenth | Manifests a rotating blue wheel of light and seawater, identified as the Sea God Trident’s true form. Huo Yuhao shatters it with a palm strike 310. |
Divine Domains
Tang San deploys domains associated with both God Positions 319 320.
- Sea God Domain: Converts incoming domain slashes into waterlike ripples. He compresses it to within half a foot of his body and uses the Golden Trident as its inner nexus 319.
- Asura Domain: Asura Manifestation: Creates a blood-colored purgatory filled with Asura phantoms and manifests an enormous Asura God figure 320.
- Domain clash: By opening domains three times and drawing on the Divine Realm Center, he manages to cleave Lu Ren’s Malevolent Shrine, ending that exchange in a draw 320.
- Limits: Lu Ren’s fire arrow destroys the Sea God Domain, while domain-eating insects undermine the Asura Domain. Forced collapse inflicts backlash even though Tang San does not suffer Cursed Technique Burnout 320.
Divine Observation and Mortal Intervention
Tang San observes and influences the Douluo Continent from the Divine Realm 209 214 218.
- Uses the Golden Ancient Tree as an intermediary to lend power, restrain Mu En’s lifespan loss, restore his reason, and suppress reversed blood flow 214.
- Directly interrupts Lu Ren’s Domain Expansion by sending divine power through a phantom Sea God Trident 218.
- Leaves protective divine power on Tang Wutong that also enables surveillance of her surroundings and detection of Lu Ren if he approaches sufficiently closely 230.
- Searches Huo Yuhao’s Divine Sea with concealed divine sense, but fails to detect Lu Ren’s presence 263 286.
- Cannot divine Lu Ren’s origins: his investigation returns no past or causal history 214.
- Faces committee restrictions on mortal interference, enforced politically by the Destruction God King 219 259.
Faith Power
Tang San receives Faith Power from believers associated with both his public legacy and the Holy Emperor identity 140 230.
- Holy Spirit Cult worship reaches him despite believers not knowing the Holy Emperor is Tang San 140.
- He regards Shrek’s destruction as the loss of followers capable of supplying vast quantities of faith 230.
Three Realms Judgment Sword
After accepting the origin powers of Goodness and Evil, Tang San can unleash the Three Realms Judgment Sword alone 317.
- Combines Asura power with the two absorbed God King origins.
- Manifests a gigantic sword of red, white, and black light spanning the heavens 317.
Endurance and Combat Limitations
Tang San survives prolonged assaults through divine defenses, artifacts, and external healing rather than matching Lu Ren’s close-combat skill 310 321 322.
- Endures Huo Yuhao’s five-minute enhancement by concentrating on Sea God defenses and healing 310.
- Life Blessing and the Tree of Life restore catastrophic injuries, including dismemberment and bodily fragmentation 318 321.
- Recovery consumes finite reserves; one major attack uses roughly one-third of the Tree of Life’s remaining source power 321.
- His technical shortcomings become decisive against Lu Ren, whose physical strength and combat skill exceed his own. Tang San eventually recognizes that he has relied heavily on superior attributes, artifacts, and accumulated resources 321 322.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden Trident / Sea God Trident — Super Divine Artifact used for Sea God techniques, defense, and domain stabilization; expended in his final detonation 310 319 322.
- Asura Demon Sword / Asura Blood Sword — Super Divine Artifact associated with his Asura God form. Repeated clashes with Lu Ren leave it extensively cracked before its final detonation 293 317 321 322.
- Asura God Armor — Blood-colored armor broken and stripped away during Lu Ren’s attacks 318 319.
- Divine Realm Center — Supplies enormous reserves and rule-level support. Its connection to Tang San is forcibly severed during the final battle 320 322.
- Golden Ancient Tree — Mortal-world intermediary for his covert assistance to Mu En; later destroyed with Shrek Academy 214 230.
Relationships
- Lu Ren — Principal enemy. His disruption of Tang San’s plans escalates into a blood feud over Tang Hao, Ah Yin, and Tang San’s companions, ending in Tang San’s death 214 300 323.
- Xiao Wu — Wife. He places her somewhere safe before confronting Lu Ren and asks the Goddess of Life to care for her if he fails; ultimately chooses not to return to her 298 317 323.
- Tang Wutong — Daughter. Intended as Huo Yuhao’s future wife and later used as a potential lure for Lu Ren 214 230.
- Tang Hao and Ah Yin — Parents, killed by Lu Ren. Tang San hopes to resurrect them, but their complete destruction leaves no remnant souls to recover 300.
- Huo Yuhao — Intended protégé and future son-in-law. Tang San seeks to recruit him after his ascension, but their relationship becomes openly hostile 214 263 309 310.
- Mu En — Crucial mortal agent entrusted with preserving the continent’s balance and guiding Huo Yuhao. Tang San secretly supports him and reacts furiously to his death 214.
- Destruction God King — Political rival who challenges Tang San’s interference and later defeats him in battle; subsequently stands alongside him against Lu Ren 219 279 316.
- Goddess of Life — Final-battle supporter whose blessing repeatedly saves his life 317 318 322.
- Rong Nianbing — God of Emotion and Huo Yuhao’s predecessor. Consults Tang San about the blocked Divine Nature Seed and later asks whether he can defeat Lu Ren 258 316.
- Lie Yan and Ji Dong — God Kings of Goodness and Evil whose sacrificed origin powers strengthen Tang San before the final confrontation 316.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Ten-Thousand-Year Plan
Tang San intends Huo Yuhao to enter Shrek Academy, meet and marry Tang Wutong, become the continent’s strongest, and revitalize the Tang Sect with his talent and Fortune. Mu En serves as a key stabilizing agent in this arrangement 214.
Lu Ren derails that course: Huo Yuhao joins the Body Sect instead, never meets Tang Wutong during the intended period, and becomes disconnected from Tang San’s planned marriage. The Spirit Pagoda’s rise further overturns the existing Soul Master order 209 214.
Intervention and Shrek’s Destruction
Tang San secretly assists Mu En through the Golden Ancient Tree, but Mu En is killed outside Mingdu. As Lu Ren’s strength continues to rise, Tang San decides that the restrictions against interference can no longer dictate his response 214 217.
He directly disrupts Lu Ren’s Domain Expansion during the battle involving Tang Hao and Ah Yin, drawing the Destruction God King’s attention. After promising not to interfere further, he watches Shrek Academy fall. His attempt to obtain a justification for intervention through Tang Wutong also fails because Lu Ren refuses to approach her closely enough 218 219 230.
Divine Realm Infiltration
Tang San initially expects to punish Lu Ren after his ascension. When Huo Yuhao enters the Divine Realm, Tang San examines him, finds nothing abnormal, and believes Lu Ren is already dead 258 263.
After losing a prolonged battle against the Destruction God King, he learns that Huo Yuhao has displayed Lu Ren’s techniques and summoned Mahoraga. He then suspects that Lu Ren has possessed Huo Yuhao and connects this possibility to the unexplained attacks within the Divine Realm 279 286.
The Culling Game
Tang San becomes caught in Lu Ren’s Culling Game, where prohibition techniques complicate combat and flight. Huo Yuhao overwhelms his Sea God form during a temporary enhancement, but Tang San survives until its time limit expires and counterattacks 293 308 310.
He then notices a possible secret in the point-enhancement process when a cursed spirit prevents Huo Yuhao from exchanging points in front of him. Before he can investigate, Lu Ren redirects the frenzied Golden Dragon King toward him, exploiting its hatred of the Asura God and forcing Tang San into a prolonged retreat 310 312.
Shinjuku Showdown
Strengthened by Goodness and Evil’s origins and the Divine Realm Center, Tang San takes the lead against Lu Ren. Despite his confidence, Lu Ren dominates their physical exchanges, repeatedly overcoming his weapons, armor, and domains 316 317 318 320.
The decisive turn comes when Lu Ren’s allies raid the committee and Ji Juechen severs Tang San’s connection to the Center. With his reserves collapsing and Mahoraga pressing the attack, Tang San burns his fundamental Divine Power and attempts mutual destruction by detonating both artifacts and both God Positions 322.
Death and the Choice of South
Lu Ren survives the detonation. Tang San’s final consciousness enters a comforting vision of his parents and former companions, where he admits that he lost completely and could not avenge them 323.
Offered the choice between returning north to the battlefield or going south into the warmth of the past, he chooses south. His body remains severed across the waist on the ruined battlefield, while he abandons the struggle and the prospect of returning to Xiao Wu 323.
