Elevated ontological rank 712 Following treatment by the newly deified Prison Doctor, the Doctor identifies her increased rank as the reason she cannot yet control her ability. Emotional shock triggers uncontrolled flesh growth.
Entry onto the Godhood Path 902 Bypasses the ritual and steps directly onto a stairway to godhood, decorated with flowers and fresh leaves and accompanied by musicians resembling angels. The passage documents her ascent, not its completion.

Background / History

Old World Origins

Nini is not one of the gene-replicated children raised alongside Liuguang. According to the Warden, Shadow brought her back from Mount Kunlun before the Spark Plan, together with Dan Guofeng and the infant Dante. Shadow refused to explain her origins and spent much of his time beside her. Chief Bai named her Liu Ni because she was shy. She, Dante, and Bai Ning were subsequently cryogenically frozen because they were too young to undergo modification 692.

Historical scenes connect her infancy to Lu Xiao’s experience acting as Liu Guang. Dan Qingrong calls the baby Nini and presses the Wood Heart to her forehead as part of a god-making project. She explains that she can fuse traits into others, although the fusion has not yet succeeded at that point. Lu Xiao later reasons that the child is destined to be sealed away and eventually placed in the orphanage; this is his reconstruction of events rather than a fully established account 596 598.

The Doctor eventually presents Nini with a genetic comparison report showing a 99.9% DNA match between Liu Guang and Liu Ni and explicitly identifies Shadow as her father 711.

Adoption and Exploitation

Nini grows up in the orphanage with Liuguang. Unlike the other children’s adoptive families, her adoptive parents have no identified ties to the Prison Wardens. Neither the Doctor nor the Warden can explain why she was placed with an ordinary couple 691 692.

Her adoptive parents, Zhang Chaoya and Liu Wen, exploit her ability to transfer illnesses. As her condition deteriorates, they negotiate a final deal to surrender her to Liu Mingsheng. An examination of her body within the reconstructed Dreamscape reveals numerous lethal diseases and missing organs 136 137 142.

A driver kills Zhang Chaoya while Nini watches from a locked car. He then intends to deliver her to the final buyer himself. Little Black deceives him with a Dreamscape, making him believe he is travelling to the buyer’s manor while actually bringing Nini back to the orphanage. Police records subsequently list her as missing 139 143.

Rescue and First Treatment

Little Black shelters Nini in beautiful dreams. Within the orphanage Dreamscape, she appears as a cheerful child who plays with the Orphanage Director and shares food with Slick. Her real body is that of a gravely ill young woman 129 130 143.

The Director secures Little Black’s cooperation by promising protection and treatment for her. Liuguang then carries her out of the orphanage. Temporarily blinded by an eye disease, she recognizes his voice and calls him “Big Brother Pidàn” 142 144.

The Prison Doctor diagnoses 331 illnesses and 32 curses, with two curses alone maintaining her vital signs. Assisted by Ivan’s alchemy array and Lu Xiao’s flesh and blood, he spends two days removing diseased tissue and rebuilding her body. All diseases are cleared; the remaining curses are left to be gradually destroyed by Lu Xiao’s blood 145 146 148.

The Doctor arranges a separate room, education, and a future place at the facility for Nini. He initially avoids registering her as a contained anomaly because uploading her ability to the Prison Warden System could expose her to powerful people seeking effortless treatment 148.

The Fall of C03

Nini remains hospitalized with severe surgical complications. When C03 falls to contamination, her attending doctor tears out her medical tubes and injects adrenaline into her heart. During a brief struggle against his madness, he urges her to run and gouges out his own eyes. The injection temporarily restores enough movement for her to escape her bed 319.

She evades the blinded doctor until Slick and Liuguang find her. When Lu Xiao approaches seeking her ability, she agrees to help on the condition that he first save her two “big brothers” from danger 320 321.

Nini transfers Dante’s Cage side effects into herself despite Liuguang’s protests. She then attempts to save Little Black, whose death places him beyond her ordinary ability. Shadow offers temporary divine power in exchange for a future task; she accepts, eats his heart, and receives another Cage injection 322 323.

Her body becomes a constantly changing mass of decaying and regenerating tissue. Shadow insists that she remains contained at C03 and cannot leave without permission, helping drive Liuguang to reject the Prison Wardens 324 325 329.

Genetic Collapse and Recovery

The Prison Doctor can initially do little beyond maintaining Nini’s vital signs. The Doctor identifies the “life” trait in her gene fragments, but her limited mastery of its rules prevents her from repairing herself completely. He considers elevating her existence through another trait and a Godhood Ritual, but cannot resolve the ritual requirement 425 626.

Her condition is later identified as Cage-induced genetic collapse. The effects of two doses—Dante’s transferred burden and Shadow’s injection—accelerate both the deterioration and her pain. The Prison Doctor states that he cannot treat it without attaining godhood 322 323 693.

After the Prison Doctor becomes a deity, the Doctor directs him to cure Nini and take her to Hell. Subsequent scenes show her conscious and recovering, although learning that Shadow was her father and has died causes an emotional crisis. Her newly elevated ability goes out of control, producing masses of new flesh. Lu Qian’s comfort and Little Black’s dream of Liu Guang raising her help her regain composure 706 711 712.

Physician and Goddess

The Prison Doctor teaches Liu Ni medicine without reservation. Her meticulousness and life trait make her a gifted student: within two days, she earns the soldiers’ recognition. While some soldiers pursue her romantically, she remains focused on medicine 772.

She later enters the Godhood Path without performing a ritual. As she gains power and witnesses humanity’s sacrifices in Hell, she decides to shoulder responsibilities of her own and begins to understand her father’s actions 902 1134.

As “Mother’s” Chosen One, Liu Ni becomes the Goddess among the Mother God Elves. Her position does not initially grant freedom: after moving into a palace on Mother Goddess Star, she is forbidden to leave or communicate with outsiders. Qin Nuo is her only regular companion during this isolation 1346 1347.

With Lu Xiao’s planning, beneficial policies are promoted in Liu Ni’s name, and she personally participates in their implementation. Over twenty years, she wins support among ordinary Mother God Elves and builds a team loyal to her, preparing for a future accession as Empress. By her later reunion with Lu Xiao, she has become visibly more mature and confident 1442 1474.

Appearance

Nini’s appearance changes dramatically through illness, reconstruction, and adulthood.

  • Childhood Dreamscape: Big, dark eyes and two pigtails 130.
  • Before treatment: Extensive skin ulceration, temporary blindness, missing organs, and eerie white blood 137 144 145.
  • After her first operation: Sutured wounds cover her body, leaving no intact skin 148.
  • During genetic collapse: Becomes an unrecognizable mass of tissue that continually decays and regenerates 329 425.
  • Later adulthood: Described as a dazzling beauty, contrasting with Liu Guang’s unremarkable face. She wears ceremonial star-gauze robes and a crown of stars 1474.

Personality

As a child, Nini is affectionate, generous, and sensitive to perceived rejection. She shares her steamed bun with Slick, becomes deeply hurt when he throws it away, and quickly forgives him after an apology. She then promises to save dumplings for him 129 130.

Years of suffering leave her emotionally numb and convinced that her ability is her only value. During the C03 disaster, the prospect of death briefly feels like release. Nevertheless, she bargains for Slick and Liuguang’s safety and risks herself to save Little Black 319 321 323.

Her later life shows growing purpose and self-confidence. She devotes herself to medicine, accepts responsibility for helping others, and remains considerate despite her elevated status. Qin Nuo particularly admires her frugality and refusal to complain about her living conditions 772 1134 1225 1474.

Abilities & Skills

Illness Transfer

Nini can remove another person’s ailments by transferring them into herself 142 322.

  • Saves Dante by taking on the side effects of Cage through physical contact 322.
  • Bears the transferred harm herself; the treatment is not consequence-free for her 145 322.
  • Cannot ordinarily revive someone who is already dead, as demonstrated by her unsuccessful initial attempt to save Little Black 323.
  • Her painless treatment makes her a target for wealthy clients and potentially powerful Prison Wardens 148.

Life Trait

The Doctor confirms the presence of the “life” trait through information extracted from her gene fragments 626.

  • Her rescue of Dante is identified as a manifestation of the trait 425.
  • Supports her rapid development as a physician 772.
  • Initially cannot overcome her genetic collapse because she lacks sufficient mastery of its rules 626.
  • Becomes difficult to control after her ontological rank rises; uncontrolled activation produces rapid flesh growth 712.

Reconstructed Body

Her diseased flesh and tissue are replaced with material derived from Lu Xiao’s body 146 319 323.

  • Provides regenerative support while Cage destroys her body 323 327.
  • Does not prevent severe surgical complications or genetic collapse 319 693.
  • Slick believes it should grant exceptional resistance to contamination; this is his assessment rather than a demonstrated guarantee 319.

Medicine

Liu Ni studies directly under the Prison Doctor and quickly gains practical recognition 772.

  • Learns through meticulous attention and support from her life trait.
  • Earns soldiers’ confidence within two days.
  • Continues working in an Experiment Room during her time in Hell 772 897.

Relationships

  • Liu Guang / Shadow — Father. He brings her back from Mount Kunlun as an infant; much later, he empowers her in exchange for a task. She learns their relationship only after being told he has died 323 692 711.
  • Liuguang / Pidàn — Orphanage companion whom she calls her big brother. He rescues and protects her, opposes her sacrifice for Dante, and ultimately asks the Doctor to spare her from research. He is a genetic replica of Shadow, distinct from her father 144 322 692 697.
  • Little Black — Protector who returns her to the orphanage and gives her comforting dreams. Her determination to save him leads her to accept Shadow’s bargain 143 323 712.
  • Prison Doctor — Physician and mentor. Reconstructs her body, sustains her through genetic collapse, and later teaches her medicine 146 425 706 772.
  • Doctor — Oversees her protection and treatment, investigates her condition, and reveals her parentage. He promises Liuguang that she will not be used for research 148 626 697 711.
  • Lu Xiao — Provides the flesh and blood used in her reconstruction, later asks her to save Dante, and eventually helps build her political support among the Mother God Elves 146 322 1442.
  • Lu Qian — Affectionate younger companion who calls her “Sister Nini.” Helps calm her after her emotional crisis; Liu Ni finds their meetings comforting 712 897 1476.
  • Slick — Protective friend. Reconciles with her over the discarded bun and later helps Liuguang find her during C03’s fall 130 320.
  • Zhang Chaoya and Liu Wen — Adoptive parents who exploit her ability and negotiate to hand her over to Liu Mingsheng 136 142.
  • Qin Nuo — Companion and attendant on Mother Goddess Star. Fond of Liu Ni, although she maintains a distance during Liu Ni’s confinement 1225 1346.
  • Nico — Close later-life friend. Liu Ni buys an authority for her, and the two later appear walking arm in arm 1471 1474.
  • “Mother” — Grants Liu Ni her status as Chosen One. Her intentions remain uncertain, and she tells Liu Guang that his attitude toward Nini will determine her own 1328 1347.
