Background / History
Elemental homeworld
Calamity was born on a planet composed of elements, inhabited by other elemental life-forms. Despite their unusual nature, his people were weak by cosmic standards: reaching Deity rank made him the strongest being in the entire clan. By Earth’s age standards, he became their supreme leader before turning twenty. He later describes himself as a newly mature life-form burdened with his people’s hopes for the future 1362.
His early attitude toward leadership was detached. He regarded both the elements and his people as soldiers and paid little attention to whether they lived or died. He also disliked interacting with believers and eventually left his planet to wander the Universe 513 1362.
While he was away, an outside life-form devoured his home planet. Calamity survived because he had left, but the loss drove him mad and left him without a home to return to. He initially explains this through an analogy in which he is a child whose mother died during his travels 458 459 513.
Life on Earth
On Earth, Calamity alternated between sleep, confusion, and brief periods of lucidity. He brought rain to nearby inhabitants and became an object of their faith, but their worship did little to relieve his despair. His careless use of power sometimes turned drought into flooding 1362.
By the time he met Lu Xiao, Calamity wanted recognition from Earth’s World Will so he could end his wandering. This arrangement became problematic when he learned that the planet’s Creator—and therefore its World Will—was already gone 459 470 758.
Appearance
- Original body: A transparent humanoid shell filled with continuously moving, multicolored elements. Its appearance is compared to a clear glass bottle containing boiling fluorescent dye 459 681.
- Natural features: His elemental body has no hair 734.
- Elderly disguise: Appears as a small, white-bearded old man during his encounter with Lust 478.
- Human skins: Wears supplied flesh or skin over his original body. He later adopts Liu Guang’s appearance, causing an awkward meeting when the real Liu Guang sees him 681 714 1260.
- Raven transformation: Death’s intervention gives him black feathers, talons, and wings. The feathers shimmer in multiple colors because they are composed of differently colored elements 598.
- Later appearance: Appears draped in variegated feathers when delivering Time’s consciousness 1569.
Personality
Calamity initially presents himself as a mature, courteous gentleman. He socializes without insisting on the privileges of a deity, and his praise of Lust is sincere rather than driven by attraction. His nonhuman sense of beauty allows him to appreciate her without sharing the prejudices that shaped her life 481 485 541.
His courtesy does not make him merciful. He engineers the mutual slaughter of Flame Demon survivors and dismisses responsibility on the grounds that they are killing one another. He openly tells Lu Xiao that he was never a good god. Over time, he becomes more calculating, using restraint, intimidation, and indirect pressure instead of relying only on destructive force 530 569 662.
The destruction of his home remains a source of grief beneath his humor. He chooses family affection during the succubi’s emotional experiences and responds warmly to concern from Lu Xiao’s companions. His attachment to Lu Xiao eventually outweighs his old desire to find a permanent planetary home 521 588 714 758.
Calamity is also curious, sociable, and easily drawn into banter. He studies Earth’s internet culture, adopts gaming terminology, and uses ideas from Baidu Tieba in both schemes and combat techniques 568 588 1251.
Abilities & Skills
Authority of Calamity
Calamity’s authority governs the spread and control of disasters, extending from planetary catastrophes to cosmic phenomena 459 1251.
- Disaster detection and suppression: Predicts an imminent earthquake and stops it by touching a wall 460.
- Volcanic and atmospheric disasters: Stirs flame elements to provoke a volcanic eruption, then gathers ash and smoke into a hurricane 524.
- Earth manipulation: Parts the ground, retrieves buried objects, and restrains opponents by leaving them half-buried 460 657 662.
- Exceptional interaction with Hell’s terrain: Can separate soil that Lu Xiao and other Deities cannot physically damage 605.
- Man-made disasters: Expands his understanding of the authority after provoking survivors into killing their own clansmen 530.
- Large-scale destruction: Leaves deep gouges where the Holy City once stood 715.
Elemental Physiology
His body contains numerous elements maintained in a precise balance. Calamity compares them to human blood but stresses that their role is more fundamental 467.
- Instinctive stability: Maintaining this balance is an innate function that persists even when he loses his reason 467.
- Catastrophic imbalance: Claims that disrupting the balance could, at minimum, blow a planet apart. This is described as a potential consequence, not a demonstrated attack 467.
- Material limitation: Cannot freely supply Ivan with bodily elements, since even a small surplus or deficit could collapse his body 467.
- Species reproduction: Two members of his species reproduce by releasing elements that combine into a new life-form 524.
- Dependence on bodily condition: Losing his body temporarily prevents him from using his authority 476.
Wind Manipulation and Flight
Calamity controls wind elements to fly and transport companions 675.
- Carries Lu Xiao at high speed and can evacuate multiple people at once 675 764.
- At full speed, friction among the wind elements produces sparks, making his flight resemble a fiery tornado 764.
- Uses rapid flight to carry a severely deteriorated Lu Xiao toward the mysterious thicket in search of help 682.
“Seemingly Black Hole”
During his Ascension Ceremony, Calamity creates a dark-matter vortex that imitates some visible effects of a black hole 1251.
- Formation: Repeated spatial tremors expose and gather dark matter into a vortex.
- Effects: Distorts light, tears apart spacecraft, and drags crews inward while stripping away their divinity.
- Scale: Used against a formation of nearly ten thousand spacecraft and warships.
- Limit: It is explicitly not a genuine black hole; Calamity cannot create one directly at that stage.
- Inspiration: An inaccurate astronomy post on Baidu Tieba nevertheless gives him the idea for the technique 1251.
Consciousness Manipulation
Calamity can enter a target’s thought layers and extract information from memory 512.
- Learns the Language of Hell from a Wanderer’s memories.
- Offers to teach Lu Xiao the same method 512.
Information Flood
Calamity projects repetitive murmurs that agitate the minds of lower-ranked beings 569.
- Uses the technique alongside his ancient aura to intimidate seven hostile Deities.
- The murmurs affect their emotions and demonstrate his superior ontological rank.
- Its intensity is explicitly weaker than the information flood produced by the being stationed on the Sun 569.
Honorific Name
Calamity’s appellation identifies him through his authority 538:
Lord of Misfortune and Disaster, the source of all disasters.
You are the root of disaster;
You are the Lord who governs divine punishment;
You are Calamity!
- He senses anyone reciting the appellation, regardless of his location.
- He can use the reciter as a guide to locate them and descend beside them.
- Responding is voluntary; he can ignore a summons from a dangerously powerful being 538.
Cosmic Knowledge and Piloting
His travels make him an important source of information for Lu Xiao, though he distinguishes some personal theories from established knowledge 469 489.
- Identifies Zhou and explains its kinetic-energy defense and ability to scale space 488 489.
- Pilots Zhou to the Dark Prison and agrees to operate it as a mobile base 490.
- Explains faith, authority, honorific names, and the risks of taking on additional authorities 507 530 538.
- Identifies the Brain Worm as the Zerg swarm’s decisive target and explains why its high-level defenders make it difficult to kill 831.
Madness and Death’s Protection
Before becoming Death’s Chosen One, Calamity can force himself to remain lucid only by allowing madness to accumulate toward a later eruption. Using his authority accelerates this process 459 537.
- Initially asks Lu Xiao to banish him if he becomes uncontrollable before obtaining the World Will’s recognition 459.
- Later expects to enter unconscious wandering within about ten days and agrees to avoid large-scale authority use 537.
- Becoming Death’s devotee ends the continued accumulation of madness; Death shoulders part of that burden 657 758.
- Death’s protection does not mean Calamity can freely demand divine intervention, as Old Feis reminds him 785.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Human skins — Coverings used to adopt human appearances, including Liu Guang’s face 714 1260.
- Zhou — A space-scaling creature he pilots; proposed as a mobile base carrying the C03 Containment Facility’s equipment 489 490.
- Collected raven feathers — Hidden underground and later retrieved for delivery to Prison Doctor, who needs them to make lanterns for medical workers 605 657.
Relationships
- Lu Xiao — Closest companion and traveling partner. Their initial alliance becomes a deeply personal bond: Lu Xiao calls him his friend, family, and brother, while Calamity stays with him rather than immediately resuming his cosmic travels 459 620 758.
- Death — Patron and protector. Calamity provokes Death’s raven projection while trying to escape an unknown pursuer, but ultimately becomes Death’s Chosen One and gains relief from his madness 598 656 657.
- Old Feis — Fellow servant of Death and frequent companion. Their relationship mixes scolding and practical support; Calamity previously risks his life to save Old Feis during the latter’s Ascension, and Old Feis later rushes to protect Calamity’s ceremony 775 847 1251.
- Morati — Fellow raven-transformed companion and Death’s Chosen One. They reunite while collecting souls and later share the same patronage 600 656.
- Lust / Amanda — Receives his sincere admiration and dances with him near the end of her life. Lu Xiao attributes her love for Calamity to his compliment being free of desire 481 485.
- Ivan — Seeks Calamity’s elemental materials for an alchemical route to godhood. Calamity initially refuses because extracting the elements would endanger his body; Ivan’s interest persists 466 467 835.
- Ruiqi — Ally in the Succubus settlement. He reassures her during Lu Xiao’s absence and gives her a sense of security even while trapped in raven form 567 604.
- Dante — Cooperates with him to secure the submission of hostile Deities. Dante’s concern when following him to the thicket leaves Calamity genuinely touched 569 588.
- Observer — The being associated with the hidden Anchor Point in Calamity’s body. Its unexplained interest terrifies him and prompts his attempt to obtain protection from Death 578 585 598 599.
- Liu Guang — The person whose face Calamity adopts. Liu Guang does not object when they eventually meet 714 1260.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Alliance with Lu Xiao
- Introduces himself during a rare lucid interval and agrees to cooperate with Lu Xiao despite the danger posed by his instability 457 459.
- Investigates the flooded J01 Containment Facility, recalling that a mist-shrouded figure tried to seize his authority while he was unconscious 460.
- Accompanies Lu Xiao to C03 and Prison, where Doctor examines his unusual nature and Ivan recognizes a possible route toward godhood 464 465 466.
Campaign in Hell
- Helps Lu Xiao seek Morati and obtain resources, raven feathers, and Deities for research 513 569.
- Attacks the Flame Demon Clan with a volcanic hurricane. Lu Xiao amplifies the disaster; the resulting hurricane later sweeps across nearly half of Hell 524 526 569.
- Assists Dante in coercing seven hostile Deities into submission. Dante retains Parasite Demon and hands the others to Calamity 569 570.
The Anchor Point and Raven Transformation
- Discovers that a higher-ranked being has planted an Anchor Point in him, but cannot locate or remove it despite repeatedly searching his body 578 585.
- Heads to the mysterious thicket intending to force its inhabitant and his pursuer into conflict. His departure also draws the allied army away from the Succubus settlement 588.
- Repeatedly plucks ravens in front of Death’s projection until he is transformed into a raven himself. A mass expelled from his body manifests as the Observer, which clashes with Death’s side 598 599.
- Is ordered to collect one hundred million souls before being released. In raven form, he cannot use his normal abilities and must communicate through cries or writing 599 605.
- Later regains his freedom and confirms that both he and Morati have become Death’s Chosen Ones 656.
Remaining with Lu Xiao
- Seeks help when Lu Xiao’s condition deteriorates, carrying him to the thicket and contacting Old Feis 682 709.
- Tells Lu Xiao that, if Lu Xiao had destroyed his home, he would cling to him and demand a thousand replacement planets. Lu Xiao privately resolves to fulfill his wish for a new home 714.
- Agrees to travel through the Universe with Lu Xiao once the threats to humanity have been resolved 758.
- Leaves with Old Feis on a dangerous, confidential assignment from Death 847.
Ascension and the Central Black Market
- Travels to the border battlefield where the three major cosmic factions meet 1238.
- Destroys a Wanderer fleet during his Ascension Ceremony and subsequently becomes a Great Old One 1251 1260.
- At Dark Tide, plays the role of an extravagant customer to attract higher-level attention. His purchases exceed thirteen hundred deity slaves, and his spending with Lu Xiao reaches ten billion Star Source 1286.
- Later frees his purchases and uses their assistance in the plan’s final stage 1320.
- Escapes with Lu Xiao, Old Feis, and Morningstar’s flesh and skin before the Star Chasers or a Dark Star Clan High-Level Life can arrive 1343.
Retrieval of Time’s Consciousness
- Delivers Time’s consciousness, contained in a gemstone-like eyeball, and asks that the promise to restore his freedom be honored. Technology is astonished that someone who became an Old One less than a thousand years earlier accomplished the retrieval 1569.
- The operation involves hiding inside Old Feis during a subspace escape. When a pursuing tentacle nearly kills Old Feis, Death intervenes; afterward, Calamity is placed in a spatial interlayer 1570.
- Appears with Old Feis in the final extra chapter, watching Lu Xiao’s appointments and arguing over how he should divide his time among his companions 1573.
Trivia
- “Calamity” is the surviving name used by his believers, not his remembered birth name 1362.
- His detailed image of the being that ate his homeworld should not be mistaken for an eyewitness view of its true appearance: facing it deprived him of the ability to think 459 513.
- His account of cosmic rulers forcing civilizations into mutual slaughter is explicitly presented as his own speculation 469.
- Despite his extensive knowledge, he has never heard of Alchemy Arrays when Ivan first asks for help 467.
