Appearance
Sakazuki is an imposing Marine officer whose presence is associated with an oppressive aura of slaughter. As an Admiral, he wore a dark-red suit; later, as Iron-Blooded Marines Marshal, he wore a red rose suit, a justice hat, and a billowing Marshal's coat. 148 304

- Habitually maintains a stern, poker-faced expression. 240
- Wears a red rose suit and Marshal's coat as head of the Iron-Blooded Marines. 304
Personality
Sakazuki is an uncompromising hardliner who regards piracy and criminality as evils to be eradicated. He believes Gol D. Roger's bloodline must not be allowed to survive and considers Ace's existence a threat serious enough to justify eliminating the Whitebeard Pirates. 109
His justice is ruthless even toward fellow Marines. During the Marineford War, he launched an indiscriminate Meteor Volcano at Ace's group despite G-8 Marines—including Shuen, Very Good, and T Bone—being within the attack zone. 184 He also openly condemns Garp as a traitor for raising Ace. 139
Despite his severity, Sakazuki respects strength and responds strongly to decisive action. He admires Wilton's achievements and views him as a like-minded ally, while later accepting that their ambitions make a future conflict inevitable. 98 264 348
Abilities & Skills
Magma-Magma Fruit
Sakazuki wields the Magma-Magma Fruit, an ability described among Devil Fruits capable of producing natural-disaster-level devastation. He can turn his body into magma, unleash volcanic force at close range, and bombard wide areas with magma projectiles. 151 184
- Great Eruption — Meets Whitebeard's Haki-empowered strike head-on with a magma blast. 184
- Meteor Volcano — Fires a sky-filling barrage of magma fists; its area of effect endangers enemies and allies alike. 184
- Hell Hound — Forms a surging magma hound to attack Ace at close range. 185
- Can reform his body after being dispersed into magma, though he remains vulnerable to severe damage from powerful Haki attacks. 184
Endurance and Close-Quarters Combat
Sakazuki continued fighting after suffering major injuries in his battle with Whitebeard, including bleeding from his nose and mouth and being driven into a magma-filled abyss. 184 Even while injured from that battle, he clashed directly with Red-Haired and forced both fighters to bleed heavily. 198
- Favors direct, high-pressure engagements rather than retreating. 184 198
- Uses the explosive force of magma to overwhelm opponents physically. 185
- His attacks can inflict internal damage that continues to erode an opponent after the initial strike. 198
Military Leadership
Sakazuki built the G-1 Branch into a formidable force whose Marines mirrored his stern discipline and carried pirate blood on their hands. Under his leadership, G-1 became effectively independent of Marine Headquarters and recognized him over Fleet Admiral Kuzan. 262
- Leads the Iron-Blooded Marines as Marshal. 272
- Appointed Aramaki, Doberman, and Xixis as the Iron-Blooded Marines' three Admirals. 272
- Advocates aggressive expansion into the New World and direct war against the Yonko. 208 240
History
Marine Headquarters and the Summit War
As a Marine Admiral, Sakazuki was one of Marine Headquarters' highest combat powers at Marineford. He took the central Admiral seat during Ace's execution preparations, projecting a killing intent felt even through the worldwide broadcast. 148
Sakazuki regarded Ace's heritage as intolerable and was assigned, alongside Kuzan, to escort him to Impel Down after his identity as Roger's son was exposed. 109 During the ensuing war, he fought Whitebeard directly and relentlessly pursued Ace after the prisoner's rescue attempt. 184 185
He later fought Red-Haired at full force despite being seriously injured by Whitebeard. Wilton's intervention left Red-Haired critically injured, allowing Sakazuki and Wilton to coordinate against him. 198
Fleet Admiral Succession
Following Sengoku's retirement, Sakazuki competed with Kuzan and Borsalino for the Fleet Admiral position. He narrowly lost to Kuzan by half a move and fell into despair over the defeat. 206
Sakazuki showed no respect during Kuzan's inauguration and refused to accept Kuzan's authority in practice. 206 He relocated his operations to the G-1 Branch, which increasingly ignored Headquarters orders and became a center for hardline Marines. 239 262
Alliance with Wilton and the Coup
Sakazuki and Wilton developed a close political alliance due to their shared belief in aggressive justice. They jointly opposed Kuzan's cautious policies, with Sakazuki proposing that Marine Headquarters move to the New World and Wilton arguing for an even more extreme relocation to Whole Cake Island or Onigashima. 208 209 262
After two years under Kuzan, Sakazuki accepted Wilton's proposal to force Kuzan from office. Together, they summoned Marine Vice Admirals, condemned Kuzan's leadership, and demanded that “the capable should lead.” 264 266 When the Five Elders rejected their challenge, the conflict escalated into the establishment of separate Marine forces. 268
Marshal of the Iron-Blooded Marines
Sakazuki became Marshal of the Iron-Blooded Marines, headquartered at G-1 Branch. He established three Admiral positions beneath him: Aramaki as Ryokugyu, Doberman as Fighting Dog, and Xixis as Fallen. 272
The Iron-Blooded Marines later targeted the New Whitebeard Pirates to establish their authority, although their campaign was complicated by the enemy's withdrawal from Palm Island and the broader rise of Wilton's New Marines. 276 304 Sakazuki ultimately acknowledged that he and Wilton would eventually have to fight one another unless one of them yielded. 348
Relationships
- Wilton — Political ally and fellow hardliner who joined Sakazuki in opposing Kuzan; Sakazuki views him as a kindred spirit, but expects them to become enemies eventually. 240 264 348
- Kuzan — Rival who defeated Sakazuki in the Fleet Admiral selection. Sakazuki refused to recognize his authority and helped organize the effort to remove him. 206 266
- Sengoku — Former Fleet Admiral and senior officer whose cautious approach Sakazuki frequently rejects. Sengoku opposed Sakazuki and Wilton's calls for war against the Yonko. 109 240
- Garp — Sakazuki considers Garp a traitor for secretly raising Roger's son, Ace. 139
- Portgas D. Ace — Sakazuki considers Ace's lineage a grave threat and repeatedly attempts to kill him during the Marineford War. 109 184 185
- Whitebeard — Major opponent at Marineford; their destructive duel left Sakazuki severely injured. 184
- Red-Haired — Opponent during the latter phase of the Marineford War; Sakazuki fought him despite his injuries from Whitebeard. 198
- Borsalino — Fellow Admiral and competitor in the Fleet Admiral selection; Borsalino's involvement contributed to Sakazuki narrowly losing to Kuzan. 206
- Aramaki — Recruited into Sakazuki's G-1 Branch and later appointed Admiral Ryokugyu of the Iron-Blooded Marines. 262 272
