Background / History
Ace is the son of Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. Rouge carried him for twenty months before dying from exhaustion after his birth. Roger entrusted Ace's protection to Garp, who raised him while concealing his lineage from the World Government. 139 149
After making a name for himself in the Grand Line, Ace defeated a Shichibukai, fought Jinbe for seven days and nights, and was invited to become a Shichibukai himself. He refused the offer and later joined the Whitebeard Pirates after unsuccessfully challenging Whitebeard. 108 139
Ace became the Whitebeard Pirates' Second Division Commander and treated Whitebeard as his true father. His position, talent, and connection to Whitebeard made him a major target for the Marines. 26 109
Appearance
Ace is identified by his orange cowboy hat and the orange-red flames produced by his Devil Fruit. Following the Summit War, his left arm is severed; he can shape gathered flames into a replacement flame hand. 87 180
- Orange cowboy hat 87
- Orange-red flame body and attacks 26 29
- Lost his left arm at Marineford 179 202
- Uses a flame hand after the injury 180
Personality
Ace is fiercely protective of his family. In Alabasta, he immediately intervenes when Marines threaten Luffy and refuses to let his younger brother be harmed. 26 29 His loyalty to Whitebeard is equally absolute: he rejects Teach's recruitment attempt and insists that Whitebeard alone deserves to be Pirate King. 88
The Summit War leaves Ace burdened by guilt over the deaths and injuries suffered for his rescue, particularly the reported death of Luffy and Whitebeard's sacrifice. 157 202 Afterward, he becomes more reserved, patient, and pragmatic; he prioritizes keeping people alive over reputation and accepts the responsibility of leading the New Whitebeard Pirates. 224 276
His desire for vengeance against Wilton drives years of punishing training. Even so, Ace's long-term goal evolves beyond revenge into becoming Pirate King to honor Whitebeard and carry forward the dreams of those he lost. 224 344
Abilities & Skills
