Background

Luffy began his voyage as the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, carrying a 30 million Belly bounty—the highest then known in the East Blue—after the defeat of Arlong 1. His crew's first documented clash with Rear Admiral Wilton at Loguetown ended in a crushing defeat and arrest; Luffy's attacks could not damage Wilton, and he was left unconscious and near death 2 4.

Monkey D. Dragon intervened when Wilton attempted to transfer the Straw Hats to Impel Down, identifying Luffy as his son and taking the crew away from Loguetown 10 13. Luffy himself had not known Dragon was his father before their meeting 26.

His grandfather, Marine hero Monkey D. Garp, later visited him in Impel Down and revealed their relationship to the crew. Although Garp initially refused to free them, he secretly trained Luffy and the Straw Hats in Haki and Rokushiki so they could gain the strength to escape on their own 50 72.

Luffy also has an exceptional ability to turn enemies and strangers into allies. Loguetown Arrest

Luffy confronts Wilton after the Marine blocks the Straw Hats' escape. His Gum-Gum attacks fail to affect Wilton, and the crew is captured. Dragon subsequently intervenes, reveals himself as Luffy's father, and rescues the Straw Hats 1 2 10 13.

Alabasta and Second Imprisonment

In Alabasta, Ace protects Luffy from Smoker and later confronts Wilton to buy the Straw Hats time. After Sanji is killed, Luffy awakens Conqueror's Haki but is incapacitated by Ace before he can endanger the crew further 26 31. Luffy then chooses to help Vivi, defeats Crocodile, and is ultimately sent to Impel Down under Smoker's escort 32 35.

Impel Down

Garp secretly trains Luffy and his crew while insisting that escape must come through their own strength 50. The Straw Hats later attempt to rescue Nico Robin, but Magellan defeats them and their allies; the world reports Luffy dead in Boiling Hell 72 73. Luffy survives through the route connecting Boiling Hell to Newkama Land and later escapes Impel Down with an enormous coalition of prisoners 160 161.

Marineford and Nika Awakening

Luffy arrives at Marineford to save Ace, breaks through Marine forces, injures Smoker, and reaches the execution platform despite interference from major fighters 160 162 164. After Wilton nearly kills him and sacrifices by Usopp, Chopper, and Kuma delay his pursuers, Luffy awakens Gear Fourth and then the Nika form 166 169 172 174.

In his awakened state, Luffy overwhelms Wilton with rubberized terrain and enemy assimilation.
