| Family | Yan Huai — younger twin brother 10 13 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 10, “Twins” |
Background / History
Yan Qin serves alongside his twin brother, Yan Huai, as one of Chu Moqi’s close attendants. His duties combine personal protection with extensive daily care for Chu Moqi’s disabling injuries. He is not Chu Moqi’s childhood guard: that position belonged to Qingyun, who died at South Mountain alongside Chu Moqi’s father and elder brother 10 17 24 28.
By the time of Chu Moqi’s marriage to Cui Wan, Yan Qin is almost always at his master’s side. He pushes his wheelchair, assists with bathing and dressing, accompanies him outside the residence, and responds to medical emergencies 10 17 21 38.
Appearance
- Tall build: His height is noted when he approaches Cui Wan beneath the osmanthus tree and later blocks a doorway while delivering Chu Moqi’s refusal to see her 10 24.
- Nearly identical to Yan Huai: Their resemblance initially makes Cui Wan believe she has encountered a ghost 10.
- Sharper, steadier expression: Chu Moqi distinguishes him from Yan Huai by his sharper gaze and composed bearing, contrasting with his brother’s livelier eyes and indolent air 10.
Personality
Yan Qin is restrained, observant, and generally more measured than his younger brother. He speaks steadily, recognizes when Chu Moqi is too distressed to tolerate further criticism, and stops Yan Huai from aggravating delicate situations. His usual honesty is sufficiently trusted that Yan Huai recruits him to make an exaggerated report about Cui Wan’s injuries sound credible 13 16 17.
His loyalty includes protecting Chu Moqi’s dignity as well as his safety. He insists on secrecy after discovering an unexpected bodily response in his master, secretly applies medicine when Chu Moqi refuses treatment, and repeatedly warns against physically dangerous attempts at recovery. Nevertheless, he usually yields when Chu Moqi gives a firm order 20 38 40 49.
He also has a dry sense of humor. He recognizes that Cui Wan can pick flowers from Chu Moqi’s treasured osmanthus tree without facing the consequences Yan Huai would, and enjoys exposing his brother’s embarrassing encounter with Changfeng. His patience with Yan Huai’s antics is limited; he scolds him, strikes the back of his head, and drags him away when necessary 13 14 20 28.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts and Protective Work
Yan Qin is explicitly identified as a martial artist and maintains a morning practice routine 15 20.
- Physical restraint: Quickly seizes and immobilizes a Cui household servant who attempts to leave without explaining Cui Wan’s disappearance 42.
- Rapid movement: Leaves the courtyard in a few bounds to fetch Changfeng, returning with her roughly a quarter of an hour later 28.
- Armed response: Draws his sword when an unknown messenger appears outside Chu Moqi’s room, then stands down when ordered not to pursue 37.
- Thrown-weapon accuracy: Retrieves a concealed weapon from Chu Moqi’s wheelchair and severs the silk from which Cui Wan is hanging 47.
Medical Assistance and Daily Care
Yan Qin has practical experience managing Chu Moqi’s paralysis, spasms, impaired bodily functions, and pressure-related injuries. He assesses symptoms and administers care, but also works with physicians rather than replacing them 17 24 32 40.
- Acupoint massage and internal energy: Uses massage and the channeling of internal energy to ease leg spasms. These measures provide little relief during a particularly severe rain-triggered attack 17.
- Emergency assessment: Checks Chu Moqi’s pulse, breathing, and pupils after finding him unconscious following heavy drinking and a fall 17.
- Medication and fever care: Administers a Meridian-Soothing Pill during a pain attack and directs cooling measures and medicine preparation during a high fever 17 32.
- Abdominal massage: Uses a specific technique to ease spasms and stimulate sluggish bowel movements after prolonged sitting 24.
- Skin care and hygiene: Helps wash and change Chu Moqi, treats pressure-damaged skin, and provides regular cleaning when affected areas must remain uncovered 24 25.
Mobility Assistance
- Wheelchair support: Pushes and positions Chu Moqi’s wheelchair during household visits, public appearances, and emergencies 10 22 34 42.
- Carrying and transfers: Carries him upstairs at Spring Breeze House and brings him downstairs after a violent spasm attack 38.
- Riding assistance: Helps secure his feet in the stirrups, stops the horse when he becomes distressed, and carries him back after the attempt fails 49.
Relationships
- Chu Moqi — Master and principal charge. Yan Qin provides protection and intimate daily care, while sometimes voicing objections to decisions that endanger his health. At the Censorate, he instinctively reaches for his sword when Chu Moqi is ordered into custody, but obeys his master’s silent command not to intervene 17 24 44 49.
- Yan Huai — Younger twin brother and fellow attendant. Their close coordination contrasts with frequent friction over Yan Huai’s chatter, teasing, and habit of impersonating him 13 17 28.
- Cui Wan — His master’s wife. Yan Qin defends her concern for Chu Moqi after the latter hurts her, helps encourage her coming-of-age celebration, and later participates in rescuing her 11 21 42 47.
- Changfeng — A guard he fetches from the Shadow Guard Camp to protect Cui Wan. Yan Huai previously provoked her while using Yan Qin’s name, leaving Changfeng under the impression that the man she beat was Yan Qin 28.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Cui Wan’s Arrival
- The twins’ introduction: Yan Qin tells Cui Wan that Chu Moqi and his elder brother planted the osmanthus tree as boys. Yan Huai subsequently repeats the same information, and their resemblance frightens her into running into Chu Moqi’s wheelchair 10.
- Encouraging reconciliation: After Yan Huai visits Cui Wan under Yan Qin’s name, Yan Qin reluctantly supports his exaggerated account of her injuries to prompt Chu Moqi to check on her. He later warns his brother against impersonating him again 12 13.
- Osmanthus cakes: Chu Moqi catches both brothers secretly eating cakes Cui Wan distributed around the residence, discovering that she sent none to him 15 16.
Supporting the Marriage
- Overnight care: Following Chu Moqi’s drunken fall, Yan Qin examines him, feeds him sobering soup, and agrees that Cui Wan may remain at his bedside while the brothers keep watch outside 17.
- A private discovery: Yan Huai shows him evidence of Chu Moqi’s unexpected bodily response after a peaceful night’s sleep. Yan Qin orders that neither their master nor anyone else be told 20.
- Coming-of-age preparations: Yan Qin urges Chu Moqi to arrange Cui Wan’s hairpin ceremony, tactfully discourages a dagger as the ceremonial gift, and suggests choosing a hairpin at Flowing Cloud Pavilion 21.
Separation and Rescue
- The night meeting: Yan Qin accompanies Chu Moqi to meet the man presenting himself as Cui Minghai. Troubled by the inaccessible upstairs venue, he carries his master in and later retrieves him after he collapses with spasms 37 38.
- Refused treatment: During Chu Moqi’s decline after Cui Wan leaves, Yan Qin secretly applies medicine while he sleeps. Chu Moqi discovers this and smashes the bottle 40.
- East Street search: Yan Qin detains the evasive Cui servant whose information exposes Cui Wan’s disappearance. He joins the search and pushes Chu Moqi’s wheelchair away after her rescue 42.
Court Proceedings and Recovery
- Custody: Unable to intervene without disobeying Chu Moqi, Yan Qin watches bailiffs carry his master from court. He later wheels him back to Orchid Courtyard after the imperial audience 44 45.
- Saving Cui Wan: Despite shaking hands, he cuts the silk during her suicide attempt, allowing her to fall into Chu Moqi’s arms 47.
- Failed return to riding: He warns Chu Moqi against rushing his recovery, then intervenes when riding triggers severe distress. After carrying him back, he firmly tells him that he cannot ride again 49.
