Background / History
Yan Huai previously trained at the Shadow Guard Camp. During that period, he looked down on Changfeng because she was a woman and approached her under Yan Qin’s name to make insulting remarks. Changfeng beat him until he begged for mercy, believing she was punishing Yan Qin. The encounter left Yan Huai visibly afraid of her 28.
By the events of Chapter 48, Yan Huai and Yan Qin have spent four years helping Chu Moqi with his daily personal care. Their duties include bathing, dressing, changing his diapers, and attending to his impaired legs 12 21 48.
Appearance
- Nearly identical to Yan Qin: Their matching appearance initially leads Cui Wan to believe she has encountered a ghost. Qiaoju also struggles to distinguish their faces and voices 10 12.
- Livelier expression: Chu Moqi identifies Yan Huai by his animated eyes and comparatively frivolous, indolent air, in contrast to Yan Qin’s steadier manner and sharper gaze 10.
- Expressive mannerisms: He frequently grins, waggles his eyebrows, and exchanges conspiratorial looks when teasing Chu Moqi about Cui Wan 20 24 47.
Personality
Yan Huai is talkative, mischievous, and prone to speaking before thinking. He enjoys gossiping about Chu Moqi and Cui Wan’s developing relationship, impersonating his brother, and teasing his master about romantic matters. His attempts to help often become tactless: he worsens Chu Moqi’s resentment over the osmanthus cakes and inadvertently reminds him of his disability during the New Year’s fireworks 12 16 20 33.
Beneath the teasing, he is attentive and protective. He openly criticizes Chu Moqi for nearly killing Cui Wan, urges him to apologize, and explains why his remarks about her weight hurt her. When he recognizes that Chu Moqi is genuinely unwell, he immediately abandons his jokes and attends to him 11 12 24 30.
His concern for Chu Moqi includes protecting his privacy. Although he initially jokes with Yan Qin about signs of renewed sexual response, he agrees to keep the discovery secret. He also conceals Cui Wan’s intimate care during Chu Moqi’s fever, only to reveal it accidentally much later 20 32 48.
Abilities & Skills
Personal Care and Rehabilitation
Yan Huai is experienced in the daily care of Chu Moqi’s disabled body, carrying out sensitive tasks swiftly and with practiced familiarity 12 48.
- Helps with washing, bathing, dressing, diaper changes, and cleanup after incontinence 12 21 25.
- Massages tense muscles and acupoints with warmed medicinal oil to relieve leg spasms 11.
- Moves Chu Moqi’s ankles and leg joints through controlled bending, extension, and rotation to promote circulation and limit muscle wasting 20.
- Applies medicine to pressure injuries and ulcerated wounds 25 44.
- Supports Chu Moqi’s upper body during severe attacks to prevent his movements from aggravating his spinal injury 17.
- Limit: These measures cannot reliably stop severe flare-ups; during the autumn rain, massage and internal-energy treatment provide little relief 17.
Combat and Protective Duties
Yan Huai carries out physical enforcement and security assignments for Chu Moqi 27 42.
- Uses precise kicks against painful, vulnerable areas when punishing the men who assaulted Cui Wan, avoiding immediately fatal blows 27.
- Takes custody of a servant under orders to prevent both escape and death 42.
- Is ordered to join Yan Qin, Changfeng, and twelve Shadow Guard Camp men in the search of East Street 42.
- Limit: Changfeng decisively defeated him during their earlier encounter at the camp 28.
Impersonation and Mediation
Yan Huai exploits his resemblance to Yan Qin and frequently intervenes in Chu Moqi and Cui Wan’s disputes 12 13 30.
- Imitates Yan Qin’s composed voice and expression well enough to present himself as his brother to Qiaoju and Cui Wan 12.
- Exaggerates the risk of Cui Wan’s injuries leaving scars to encourage Chu Moqi to show concern, forcing Yan Qin to cover for him 13.
- Encourages apologies, suitable gifts, and more considerate treatment of Cui Wan 12 21 30.
- Limit: His loose tongue repeatedly undermines his discretion, most notably when he reveals the care Cui Wan provided during Chu Moqi’s fever 48.
Relationships
- Yan Qin — Elder twin brother and fellow attendant. Yan Qin regularly restrains his chatter, reprimands his impersonations, and keeps him focused on their duties, though the brothers also gossip together privately 13 16 20.
- Chu Moqi — Master and long-term care recipient. Yan Huai combines devoted service with unusually bold teasing and criticism, earning threats of extra laps, blows to the head, and, on one occasion, a wet cloth stuffed into his mouth 12 19 47.
- Cui Wan — His master’s wife, whom he addresses as “Madam.” He sympathizes with her injuries, advocates for her feelings, and fiercely resents those who mistreat her 11 27 30.
- Changfeng — Former target of his contempt and subsequent source of fear. After she beat him at the Shadow Guard Camp, even the prospect of bringing her to the residence makes him anxious 28 31.
- Qiaoju — Cui Wan’s maid and a frequent household contact. She challenges his access to Cui Wan when he delivers medicine; later, they help celebrate Cui Wan’s birthday together 12 23.
