Background / History

In their youth, Shen Suwei and Gu Linchuan traveled extensively across the continent, visiting the Heaven Dou Empire, Star Luo Empire, Slaughter City, and Sea God Island. They also accepted numerous Spirit Hall missions when money was scarce, working with Qian Daoliu and helping kill Fallen Soul Masters. Their accomplishments earned praise among Spirit Hall’s elders and disciples 5 53.

During a visit to Sea God Island, Suwei befriended Bo Saixi while Qian Daoliu and Tang Chen were also present. The two became close enough that Bo Saixi later broke precedent to visit Ice Arrival City after Gu Wuchen’s birth and personally held him 53 88.

Eventually, Suwei and Linchuan tired of their itinerant life and settled in Ice Arrival City. They began a business to support their family, which expanded far beyond their original expectations. When Wuchen was five, his profitable ideas and clothing designs accelerated the Gu Clan’s commercial growth 1.

Qian Daoliu offered Suwei a position as a Spirit Hall elder and Linchuan the position of eighth enshrined. Both declined; Suwei explicitly stated that she had grown tired of fighting and killing. She nevertheless maintained friendly ties with Qian Daoliu and welcomed the educational opportunities he could offer her son 2.

Despite worrying about separation, she respects his choices: when recommending Spirit Hall Academy, she makes clear that she will not force him to attend 1 2 5 18.

Her domestic warmth does not prevent her from being decisive. She insists on accompanying Wuchen when the Far North becomes unsettled and intervenes firmly when the Snow Empress and Bo Saixi compete over him. She also trusts his judgment in business and supports his larger ambitions, including his plan to unite the continent 18 54 87 118.

Suwei is persistent about marriage and grandchildren, eventually threatening to arrange Wuchen’s wedding herself. However, she is accepting of his potential partners: she welcomes Ah Yin without judging her past marriage, age, or identity, and treats the Two Empresses of Ice and Snow as prospective members of the family 131 165.
