Su Bai was abandoned at the entrance of Sunshine Orphanage as a baby. The elderly director, whose surname was Su, gave him that surname and named him Bai after the pale dawn light shining through the rain. His congenital leukemia is presented as the probable reason for his abandonment 10.

He grew up watching the other children leave through adoption while he remained behind. Prolonged treatment and isolation made him withdrawn, sensitive, and insecure. At eight, he underwent a bone marrow transplant during the period of the red moon’s descent; he later remembered a fiery humanoid figure appearing during the near-fatal operation 10 35.

Su Bai lived in the orphanage until twelve, then boarded at Huiying Middle School and Star Sea Middle School. Once treatment stabilized his condition, his academic ability earned him exceptional admission to Star Sea before the high school entrance examination 10 24.

His supernatural awakening threatened the ordinary life he wanted. His humor often draws on films, television, and heroic identities, including joking claims that he is Tiga or Sun Wukong 3 4 6.

His desire for an ordinary life is genuine: he fears death, fears heights, and initially rejects the Grave Keepers. That caution does not prevent decisive resistance when escape is impossible. He attacks the Little Match Girl rather than surrender his body and soul, and later accepts a thirty-percent chance of survival to help prevent a disaster threatening hundreds of thousands of people 6 9 37.

He is calculating in negotiations and willing to exploit an opponent’s assumptions, but his friends and teammates expose a more protective side. He shields Shen Fei from an incoming arrow, objects when Chu Ning risks herself to block a bullet for him, and struggles to shoot an enemy wearing Shen Fei’s appearance 5 22 31.
