Background / History
Sorcerer Supreme and Longevity
The Ancient One protected Earth’s boundaries against other dimensions for many years. She prolonged her life through energy drawn from Dormammu’s Dark Dimension, remaining alive while she searched for a successor. She eventually describes immortality as a curse and says she would have died centuries earlier without that responsibility 77 108 188.
Her explanation of the energy supply is deliberately unglamorous: Kamar-Taj sends its garbage into the Dark Dimension, where it becomes dark energy, and she draws energy back through the resulting exchange. She maintains that this is trade rather than theft 169.
Recruiting Su Zhou
The Ancient One notices Su Zhou because his spatial ring carries the aura of another dimension—not because of his undercover Hydra activities. After inspecting the ring and teasing him about its contents, she offers to teach him magic 38 39.
Su Zhou recommends Stephen Strange as her successor, but she judges Su Zhou’s ability to locate himself across the multiverse especially valuable. To begin his training, she gives him a Sling Ring, imprints the portal spell’s meaning on his mind, and leaves him in the Mirror Dimension until he opens his own escape route 39.
When Su Zhou’s handling of Mjolnir disrupts Thor’s trial, she intervenes with Odin and brings her apprentice back to Kamar-Taj. His punishment becomes an extended period of library study under her personal supervision, including reading the Book of the Vishanti 54 55 56.
Attempts to Hand Over the Position
After half a month of confinement, Su Zhou agrees to become Sorcerer Supreme. The Ancient One immediately hangs the Eye of Agamotto around his neck and lies down, declaring herself dead. The attempt fails: she retrieves the Eye, disciplines him, and ultimately accepts his request to finish dealing with Hydra before taking over 55 56.
During the Battle of New York, she shelters Sylvie and later helps handle the Avengers visiting from another universe. When Su Zhou tests their willingness to endanger his world for their own, she supports his judgment and entrusts him with the Eye of Agamotto again 69 77 78.
Time Variance Authority
The Ancient One rescues Su Zhou inside the Time Variance Authority, where she can still cast magic. Acting with the God of Time’s authorization, she helps resolve the disorder there, erases the intruders’ memories, and returns them to their original timelines. Cassandra is the exception: unable to alter her memories, the Ancient One sends her remains into the Dark Dimension 169 170.
She introduces Su Zhou to the Loki who sustains the timelines as the World Tree. After the crisis, Loki extends her life, and she gives Su Zhou a handwritten Chinese spellbook containing her insights into using the Book of the Vishanti 170 171.
Strange’s Succession and Retirement
The Ancient One later attempts to pass the Sorcerer Supreme’s responsibilities to Strange while Su Zhou is away. His return complicates that plan, and the two watch Strange’s struggle against Kaecilius while discussing how to arrange the succession. Su Zhou alters Strange’s memories so that he believes the Ancient One has died and accepts the responsibility of confronting Dormammu 186 187.
While Strange reverses the destruction of the Hong Kong Sanctum, the Ancient One repairs temporal rifts at the edges of his spell. After his negotiations with Dormammu succeed, she congratulates him as a mature Sorcerer Supreme, announces that she is going to meet Eternity, and disappears in yellow light 188 189.
Her departure is not a permanent death. She subsequently occupies a Sanctum, conceals its existence from other sorcerers, and guards Su Zhou’s Infinity Stones. After he returns as the new Lord of the Dark Dimension, she hears his account and recognizes that he has retained his access to white magic 192 193.
Teaching Wanda and Sylvie
Through her magical notes, the Ancient One privately communicates with Wanda, discussing Su Zhou’s past and recognizing another promising candidate for Sorcerer Supreme. She later accepts Wanda as a student and agrees to teach Sylvie as well 206 208.
She also obtains the Darkhold for Wanda. Her reasoning is that power itself is neither good nor evil, and that someone within their own circle could master it rather than leaving that opportunity to others 209.
Appearance
- Bald head with visible scalp scars, which Su Zhou notices during the TVA incident 38 169.
- Yellow sorcerer’s robes during her intervention in Asgard 54.
- White sorcerer’s robes when she appears inside the TVA 169.
- Somewhat androgynous voice 54.
- Dark Dimension mark on her forehead, which changes after Su Zhou takes control of that dimension 193.
- Eye of Agamotto worn around her neck while it remains in her custody 71 170.
Personality
The Ancient One combines an easygoing manner with relentless pressure when she wants a result. She frequently drinks tea, smiles through Su Zhou’s complaints, and answers his evasions with teasing remarks. Her first inspection of his spatial ring becomes an opportunity to mock his choice of storage rather than a solemn interrogation 38 39.
Her desire to retire does not prevent her from teaching seriously. During Su Zhou’s confinement, she remains available to answer his questions throughout his studies. Later, she prepares a Chinese-language guide specifically for him and allows him to continue adventuring rather than forcing his immediate return to Earth 56 171.
She is also willing to use coercion and deception: trapping students, retrieving escapees, administering beatings, and staging her death to transfer responsibility. These schemes coexist with genuine protective work, including repairing the temporal damage caused by Strange’s spell even while arranging her own departure 39 55 187 188.
Her respect for the God of Time is explicit. Although she has confined another Loki in her own universe, she honors the Loki who sacrificed himself to preserve countless timelines 170.
Abilities & Skills
Spatial Magic and the Mirror Dimension
Her spatial control substantially exceeds Su Zhou’s early portal magic 58 69.
- Creates Mirror Dimensions and draws others inside, including Odin and Su Zhou 39 54.
- Opens portals to arbitrary destinations and can connect to the multiverse 58.
- Closes another sorcerer’s portal without wearing a Sling Ring 69.
- Establishes spatial confinement that repeatedly returns escapees to her side 79.
- Uses a strand of Sylvie’s hair to open a route to the missing Loki when Su Zhou and Heimdall cannot locate him 207.
Time Magic
The Ancient One’s study of the Time Stone connects her to the God of Time and supports work beyond ordinary battlefield spellcasting 170 188.
- Uses the Time Stone to examine the original future without Su Zhou 56.
- Repairs temporal rifts created by Strange’s large-scale reversal of time, preventing additional timelines from forming 188.
- Understands how to cast inside the TVA: the energy used must be able to cross the river of time 169.
- Limit: The visitors’ future cannot be read as her own universe’s future because they come from a separate parallel universe 77.
Soul and Mental Magic
She demonstrates direct control over souls, memories, and magical concealment 39 170 192.
- Knocks Su Zhou’s soul out of his body with a palm strike; he returns through Telepathy 39.
- Erases TVA intruders’ memories before returning them to their timelines 170.
- Makes other sorcerers forget that her occupied Sanctum exists 192.
- Has mental power far exceeding Su Zhou’s at the stage when his Telepathy gains subtle influence and mind-control applications 82.
- Limit: Cannot alter Cassandra’s memories 170.
Dark Energy
Her long experience with dark energy sustains her life and gives her extensive knowledge of the Dark Dimension 108 188.
- Exchanges Kamar-Taj’s waste for dark energy through portals into Dormammu’s dimension 169.
- Possesses enough skill with dark energy for Su Zhou to propose that she rule an ownerless Dark Dimension 188.
- Refuses that proposal because her soul belongs to Eternity 188.
- Advances rapidly after receiving unrestricted energy access from Su Zhou 207.
- Limit: Despite Loki describing her as stronger than Dormammu, she later states that she can keep him out of reality but cannot kill a dimensional lord outright 170 186.
Combat and Everyday Spellcasting
- Conjures paired energy fans when an unfamiliar dark presence approaches 193.
- Uses remote force to move Su Zhou, strike him, and retrieve objects 38 54.
- Produces drinks, water, and chairs through magic 38 39 169 193.
- Controls cleaning tools magically 193.

- Eye of Agamotto and Time Stone — Her principal time-magic artifact; repeatedly entrusted to Su Zhou before Strange’s succession 55 56 78 189.
- Sling Ring — Gives one to Su Zhou for his first portal lesson, though she does not need one to manipulate his portal herself 39 69.

- Handwritten magical notes — A Chinese-language guide prepared for Su Zhou that later serves as a means of private communication with Wanda 171 206.
- Darkhold — Obtains it for Wanda’s study 209.
Relationships
- Su Zhou — Apprentice and preferred successor. Their relationship mixes sustained personal instruction, mutual trust, escape attempts, and competing schemes to avoid the Sorcerer Supreme’s workload 39 55 56 78 186.
- Stephen Strange — Student and eventual successor. She oversees his development, secretly supports his confrontation with Dormammu, and tells him she is proud of him 186 188 189.
- Wanda Maximoff — Student and prospective successor. The two first bond through private exchanges about Su Zhou; the Ancient One later supplies the Darkhold for her training 206 208 209.
- Sylvie — Sheltered guest who initially cannot escape her spatial confinement; later included in her teaching arrangements 69 79 208.
- Loki, God of Time — Respected multiversal protector who authorizes her TVA intervention and extends her lifespan 170 171.
- Odin — Longstanding acquaintance and friend. She negotiates with him over Su Zhou’s interference in Thor’s trial 54 106.
- Dormammu — Dimensional adversary and unwilling source of dark energy through her garbage-for-energy exchange 169 171.
- Baron Mordo — Eldest disciple, still at her side before his betrayal 186.
- Eternity — The being to whom she says her soul belongs and whom she announces her intention to meet upon retirement 188 189.
Alternate-Universe Counterpart
- A different Ancient One appears in the universe from which Hela was taken. She tells Odin that she has heard Eternity’s voice and assures him that Su Zhou will not threaten the universe 266.
- This counterpart restores damaged Asgard with the Time Stone. She explicitly identifies Su Zhou as another version of herself’s disciple and remarks that her counterpart was fortunate 266.
