| First Appearance | Mentioned during the rescue preparations; appears directly during his escape from captivity 2 3 |
Power Progression
Tony’s documented progression centers on armor engineering and energy technology rather than cultivation realms or personal levels.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Handmade first-generation armor | 3 4 | Built in captivity with Yinsen’s help. Encloses his body and carries a flamethrower, but its short operating time eventually leaves him trapped inside. |
| Red-and-gold flight armor | 16 | Returns to his villa in a newly built flying suit. Su Zhou subsequently arrests him for flying without a license. |
| Improved mobility and anti-icing design | 19 20 | Outmaneuvers Iron Monger and avoids high-altitude icing. Its strength remains inferior to Obadiah’s armor, and its depleted power supply leaves Tony vulnerable. |
| Low-Earth-orbit configuration | 23 | Reaches and breaches a cloaked Skrull spacecraft. Tony states that he omitted weapons systems to preserve enough power for orbital flight. |
| New-element Arc Reactor | 45 | Synthesizes the element indicated by Howard’s legacy and upgrades his reactor, addressing the palladium problem threatening his life. |
| Partial nanotechnology integration | 69 | Uses nanobots to connect armor joints, making deployment more convenient than earlier mechanically assisted suit-up systems. Skrull data accelerates this development. |
| Full nanotech armor | 195 200 | Deploys from a chest-mounted nanobot case and retracts like liquid. Future technology supplied by Su Zhou, combined with Skrull research, produces armor described as better than his future counterpart’s. |
| Hulkbuster development | 204 | Collaborates with Banner on the Hulkbuster Armor at the Avengers’ facilities in Stark Tower. |
History
Captivity and Rescue
Tony disappears in the Middle East after separating from Rhodey during a weapons-related trip. The Ten Rings hold him for three months, during which he and Yinsen secretly construct powered armor. Su Zhou attacks the compound as the terrorists discover their work, allowing both prisoners to survive 2 3.
The rescue is followed by Tony’s first experience of Su Zhou’s aggressive legalism: after helping remove the exhausted armor, Su Zhou handcuffs him. Tony becomes severely dehydrated before recovering aboard the flight home 4 5.
A Stark Industries bomb exploding beside him forces Tony to confront the consequences of his weapons business. He decides the world needs a hero more than another arms dealer and announces the closure of Stark Industries’ weapons division after returning to America 5 7.
Alliance with Su Zhou
Su Zhou recruits Tony to investigate S.H.I.E.L.D., initially claiming that his superior may be misusing agency funds. The revelation that Howard Stark helped found the organization—and that his parents’ supposed car accident might conceal something more—gives Tony a personal reason to cooperate 5 6.
Tony supplies a button-sized network-access device, then uses JARVIS to penetrate S.H.I.E.L.D.’s database. Their cooperation develops into friendship, with Tony offering intelligence and technical support for Su Zhou’s crime-fighting activities 7 13 14.
Tony nevertheless refuses to resume weapons sales when Su Zhou asks for equipment. Su Zhou instead proposes an exchange involving internet-business ideas, including social networking and short videos 14.
Iron Monger and Alien Technology
Obadiah steals Tony’s reactor and attacks him in the Iron Monger armor. Tony exploits the enemy suit’s icing problem at high altitude, but exhausts his own remaining power. When Obadiah ambushes him on Stark Industries’ rooftop, Su Zhou shoots Iron Monger’s rocket launcher, blasting the attacker away and damaging the roof 19 20.
Tony later tracks Su Zhou to a cloaked Skrull spacecraft, breaches its hull, and downloads its technology. He initially accuses Nick Fury of collaborating in an alien invasion, but accepts Su Zhou’s explanation that Fury did not deliberately bring the Skrulls to Earth 23.
The recovered spacecraft and research become major resources for Tony’s engineering. Su Zhou specifically encourages him to investigate nanotechnology for more portable armor 24 30.
Palladium Poisoning and the Stark Expo
The palladium in Tony’s chest reactor begins poisoning him. Expecting to die, he prepares arrangements for his friends, works toward giving Rhodey armor, and plans to transfer Stark Industries’ leadership to Pepper. He also gives Su Zhou a three-percent stake, making him the company’s largest shareholder after Tony 37 38.
Su Zhou administers S.H.I.E.L.D.’s lithium dioxide treatment to ease the symptoms, while emphasizing that it is not a cure. He directs Tony to Howard’s legacy and the expo model, leading to the synthesis of a new reactor element 42 45.
At the expo, Tony and Rhodey fight Ivan Vanko’s upgraded armor alongside Su Zhou. Ivan’s superior strength and electrified whips overwhelm their suits, exposing the limits of Tony’s interrupted research program 49.
Afterward, Tony carries Pepper to a rooftop and reconciles with her. Their kiss establishes their romantic relationship, despite Su Zhou, Natasha, and Rhodey interrupting the moment 51.
Avengers and the Battle of New York
Tony joins the Avengers’ mission to capture Loki and works with Banner to locate the Tesseract and investigate the Mind Scepter. Their search identifies Stark Tower’s newly installed Arc Reactor as the energy source Loki needs for his gateway 58 59 61 62.
During the Helicarrier attack, Tony physically restarts a damaged turbine while Su Zhou operates its controls. He then fights the Chitauri in New York using armor with partial nanotechnology integration 64 69.
Tony records Su Zhou’s giant transformation and subsequent defense of the city. When a strategic nuclear missile approaches, he scans it and confirms its destructive capacity; Su Zhou redirects it through the invasion portal 70 75.
After the battle, Tony releases S.H.I.E.L.D.’s failed Tesseract research and later organizes the Avengers’ public press conference at Stark Building 81 100 101.
Family Revelation and Later Conflicts
The account of Tony’s parents diverges from the history he initially believed. Bucky’s assassination mission failed after Red Guardian and a squad of agents intervened. By the later Sokovia operation, Tony knows his parents are alive, and the narration attributes his less embittered disposition partly to that knowledge 104 194.
During the assault on Hydra’s Sokovia stronghold, Su Zhou warns Tony that Killian may be pursuing Pepper. Tony checks the tower’s surveillance, becomes eager to return, and secures Su Zhou’s agreement to remove his remaining chest shrapnel. The passages do not confirm that the procedure is performed 195.
Tony subsequently fights Killian at Stark Tower. Close combat exposes his armor to Extremis-generated heat, but its nanobots repair the damage, and he prepares to rely on ranged weapons instead. After Su Zhou kills Killian, Tony leaves to rescue Rhodey and later returns safely 202 203 206.
Personality
Tony is proud, competitive, and quick to turn technical explanations into opportunities to boast. He compares himself favorably with Bruce Wayne, enjoys displaying JARVIS’s capabilities, and becomes frustrated when Su Zhou cannot follow his engineering terminology 13 14 64.
His curiosity repeatedly draws him into unfamiliar fields: S.H.I.E.L.D.’s secrets, alien energy sources, nanotechnology, and scientific size-changing all attract his attention. His ambition also extends to business, including phones, independent Arc Reactor power generation, and calculated share trading 23 37 56 70.
Beneath the showmanship, Tony is protective of people close to him. He comforts Pepper after Natasha’s infiltration is exposed, shields both Pepper and Maya during Killian’s threatened explosion, and immediately leaves to rescue Rhodey. His rejection of weapons sales remains firm even when a friend requests equipment 14 42 203.
