Background / History
Creation and ancient dangers
The Great Desolation was opened by Pangu. At its creation, it was invaded by Extraterrestrial Demons, including several Saint-level entities; Hongjun was not considered among the strongest defenders at the time. 221 449
It contains hidden locations and inheritances beyond the understanding of its known powers. Complete, damaged, and degraded Chaos Supreme Treasures are concealed in these places, including treasures associated with time, karma, and reincarnation. 162
Early calamities
Li Hongxuan transmigrated into the Great Desolation as a dying infant, immediately recognizing it as a place where even a weak creature could kill him. His arrival began disrupting the realm’s previously fixed destiny. 1
The Witch–Demon war engulfed the Great Desolation for 30,000 years and killed numerous powerful beings. During its aftermath, Gonggong struck down Buzhou Mountain, causing the sky to collapse and the Heavenly River’s waters to flood the land. 102 103 104
Investiture of the Gods and destruction
The Investiture of the Gods conflict turned the Shang–Zhou war into a broader killing tribulation involving sects, lineages, and cultivators throughout the Great Desolation. Its escalating battles filled positions on the Investiture of the Gods while devastating the realm’s population. 269 303
A later battle between Sages destroyed mountain ranges, extinguished countless Dao practitioners, and ultimately shattered the Great Desolation itself. Hongjun restored the ruined environment and reconstituted the broken land as the Earth Immortal Realm. 319
External threats
The Evil Race later discovered the Great Desolation and inflicted catastrophic damage on the Three Realms. A Corruption Clan invader nearly devastated the Earth Immortal Realm, while later Grand Dao Realm infiltrators posed a direct threat of total destruction. 389 395 402
Hongxuan eventually established a world-encompassing defensive formation and warned the realm’s inhabitants through the Great Desolation Heavenly Dao. The formation concealed the world from outside forces and was designed to restrain powerful invaders until Hongxuan could respond. 417 447
World Structure
| Region / Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Earth Immortal Realm | The name given to the reconstituted Great Desolation after the Sage battle; it was organized around four main continents. 319 |
| Mortal Realm | One of the realms formed during the later primordial transformation. 434 |
| Heavenly Court and Underworld | Included in the transformed Three Realms structure and infused with primordial energy. 434 |
| Starry Sky | Connected to Ziwei Star and the Chaos Return Origin Formation; it receives spiritual energy to restore its origin and support the wider world. 141 143 |
| Planetary fragments | Pieces of the shattered original land that Hongjun gathered and transformed into individual planets. 319 |
Characteristics
Spiritual-energy cycle
The Grand Zhou Heaven Star Chaos Return Origin Formation absorbs chaotic spiritual energy from beyond the Great Desolation and refines it into usable heaven-and-earth spiritual energy. This both repairs deficiencies in the starry sky’s origin and continuously nourishes the land. 142 143
The formation prevented a decline in spiritual energy after the collapse of Buzhou Mountain and contributed to the proliferation of sects, family powers, and independent cultivation traditions. 193
Hidden treasures and inheritances
The Great Desolation holds numerous concealed Chaos Supreme Treasures and related inheritances. Some remain intact, while others are damaged or have fallen in rank; the Six Paths Reincarnation Disk is stated to have once been a Chaos Supreme Treasure. 162
These secrets exceed what the Six Sages are known to understand, and some are connected to beings stronger than the Great Desolation’s Heavenly Dao. 123 162
World transformation
After Hongxuan integrated Pangu’s gifted bead into the world’s core, primordial power began manifesting throughout the Great Desolation. The transformation is expected to expand the realm, create treasures and spiritual items, and give its inhabitants opportunities to pursue the Primordial, Heavenly Dao, and Grand Dao Realms. 429 434
The transformation also deepened the realm’s Dao rhythm, allowing even high-level cultivators to benefit from comprehending it. 437
Defensive grand array
Hongxuan’s grand array surrounds the Great Desolation World and uses it as its core. Its functions include:
- Concealing the world from observers in the Chaos Sea. 417 454
- Detecting approaching Heavenly Dao and Grand Dao Realm enemies. 417
- Trapping invaders long enough for Hongxuan to return and eliminate them. 417
- Protecting the realm against the impending Evil Race invasion. 445 447
