History

Shrek Academy Entrance Assessment

Already known across the continent as the Immovable Wisdom King, Zhao Wuji served as Shrek Academy’s second-in-command. He took over the fourth entrance assessment, a practical combat test normally administered by Dai Mubai. Before Qi Ling arrived, Tang San’s group had suffered heavily: Xiao Wu was unconscious, while Zhu Zhuqing and Ning Rongrong were also injured 21.

Qi Ling challenged him to a fresh, one-on-one assessment, asking that the entire group pass if he won. Confident in his superiority, Zhao Wuji allowed Qi Ling to use the Elementary Ring Sealing Technique. It sealed his three black Soul Rings, depriving him of their skills and reducing his available Soul Power to the four-ring Soul Ancestor level 22.

Zhao Wuji escaped the stun from Nine Heavens Dragon Roar just in time to defend against Tyrant Dragon Fist. Rather than resist the punch completely, he yielded to its momentum and was driven through a wall. This injured him but preserved his defensive skill. He then used Position Tracking and Great Strength Vajra Palm to force Qi Ling into a direct exchange, sending him through a table 22 23.

The battle turned when Qi Ling revealed his Blood Devil Emperor Martial Soul. Its Soul Power-draining attacks bypassed the practical advantage of Zhao Wuji’s defenses, while Night Devil’s Frenzied Cry nullified his slowing and tracking skills. After exhausting himself with unsuccessful attacks, Zhao Wuji was knocked unconscious by a forehead flick powered by his own stolen Soul Power 23 24 25.

Once the sealing technique was lifted, Zhao Wuji recovered and honored the agreement. Although irritated by his defeat, he recognized Qi Ling’s exceptional talent and admitted the group, instructing Dai Mubai to take them to their dormitories 25.

Tang Hao’s Retaliation

That night, Tang Hao decided to punish Zhao Wuji for injuring Tang San. Qi Ling asked him to show restraint because Zhao Wuji had already suffered a defeat. Tang Hao responded by reducing his intended punishment from one hundred punches to ninety-nine 26.

Tang Hao beat Zhao Wuji without using his Martial Soul. Zhao Wuji appeared at the next morning’s assembly with blackened eyes, a bruised nose, and a swollen face, but could not explain the injuries because Tang Hao had ordered him to keep the encounter secret 26.

Journey to the Star Dou Great Forest

After Oscar reached level 30, Flender assigned Zhao Wuji to lead the students in obtaining Oscar’s third Soul Ring. Before departure, Flender remarked that Qi Ling might soon defeat Zhao Wuji without sealing his rings; Zhao Wuji outwardly dismissed the suggestion but privately considered it possible 41 42.

At an inn near the forest, Qi Ling approached Zhao Wuji with a jar of hundred-year-old wine. Despite the academy rule against teachers accepting benefits from students, Zhao Wuji agreed to drink with him 43.

When the students clashed with Canghui Academy, Zhao Wuji watched alongside Qi Ling. Recognizing that Ye Zhiqiu’s Soul King strength exceeded the other students’ abilities, he offered either to intervene himself or let Qi Ling handle the fight. Qi Ling chose to fight, and the power of his Super: Tyrant Dragon Fist left Zhao Wuji wondering whether he could withstand it 44 45.

Soul Ring Hunt

Inside the Star Dou Great Forest, Zhao Wuji required the students to avoid unnecessary conflict with Soul Beasts and wait for his orders before attacking. He also ordered rest before proceeding farther into dangerous territory. When Qi Ling spotted a suitable thousand-year Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent, Zhao Wuji trapped it and instructed Oscar where to strike 46.

Chao Tianxiang and Meng Yiran contested their claim to the serpent. Zhao Wuji held a clear advantage over Chao Tianxiang alone, but recognized that the arrival of her partner, Dragon Duke, would make the situation much more dangerous. He agreed to settle the dispute through a contest between students 47.

When Chao Tianxiang stalled after conceding, Qi Ling took Meng Yiran hostage, allowing Zhao Wuji to lead the group away with the serpent. Oscar subsequently obtained his third Soul Ring, and Zhao Wuji extended the search after Tang San also reached level 30 48 49.

After Ma Hongjun was poisoned by a Black Sickle centipede, Zhao Wuji decided they should return to town for medicine. Qi Ling then directed him and the others to escort Ma Hongjun while he stayed with Meng Yiran to investigate a nearby dragon’s cry 49 50.

When the Titan Giant Ape approached the group, Zhao Wuji immediately summoned his Martial Soul and warned everyone to prepare. He first tried to negotiate a peaceful withdrawal, respectfully addressing the beast as the King of the Forest. When it continued advancing, he charged forward and ordered Dai Mubai to take the students away. The students refused to abandon him and fought alongside him instead 54.

After the ape seized Xiao Wu, Zhao Wuji attacked with Great Strength Vajra Palm while using Martial Soul Avatar. Despite growing to approximately five meters tall, he was forced seven or eight steps backward by a single exchange, leaving his hand trembling and rendering him unable to continue fighting. The ape remained unharmed and began leaving with Xiao Wu just as Qi Ling arrived 54.

Zhao Wuji was with the reunited group when Qi Ling and Xiao Wu returned to find Tang San struggling to absorb an over-limit Man Faced Demon Spider Soul Ring. After the expedition and two days of rest at the hotel, he brought the students back to Shrek and went to report to Flender 57 60.

Grandmaster’s Arrival and Special Training

Zhao Wuji described the expedition’s dangers and Qi Ling’s ten-thousand-year third Soul Ring to Flender. During Yu Xiaogang’s visit, he initially attributed Qi Ling’s extraordinary strength to his Martial Souls. Yu Xiaogang corrected him, explaining that those Martial Souls were themselves dangerously powerful and that Qi Ling’s unique qualities and tenacious will allowed him to withstand them 62.

Yu Xiaogang also explained that Qi Ling had to develop both Martial Souls in tandem, keeping their Soul Ring counts no more than two apart. Zhao Wuji learned that Qi Ling was not Yu Xiaogang’s disciple, but someone with whom he discussed Martial Soul Theory as an equal. After Yu Xiaogang agreed to remain and help teach the students, Zhao Wuji went to rest 62.

During the first phase of Grandmaster’s special training, Zhao Wuji applied Gravity Enhancement to Qi Ling’s forty-jin basket, making it weigh four hundred jin. The effect also multiplied the burden of any rocks transferred into his basket: when Qi Ling took Zhu Zhuqing’s twenty-jin load, his total burden increased to six hundred jin 75.

Heaven Dou Royal Academy and Tai Tan’s Visit

Zhao Wuji received former Shrek student Qin Ming when he visited after the Soul Fighting match. Qin Ming greeted both him and Flender as his teachers before apologizing for the injuries inflicted by his students 120.

He later accompanied Shrek’s group to Heaven Dou Royal Academy, whose three Soul Douluo committee members welcomed them. When Prince Xue Xing disparaged Shrek and challenged the arrangement allowing its teachers to join the academy, Zhao Wuji was about to erupt in anger, but Flender stopped him 142 145.

After Qi Ling defeated Tai Long and Tai Nuo, Tai Tan arrived at Shrek to confront him. Following Qi Ling’s instruction to have Zhao Wuji receive the visitor first, Zhao Wuji waited anxiously at the gates. He was visibly sweating while trying to keep the Soul Douluo occupied until Qi Ling finished breakfast and arrived 195.

Sunset Forest Expedition

Zhao Wuji accompanied the teachers and students on the Sunset Forest Soul Ring hunt, which Flender also designated as a graduation examination. Flender again warned him that Qi Ling might challenge him after reaching Soul Ancestor. Zhao Wuji insisted that a Soul Ancestor could not defeat a Soul Saint like him, though he privately began to doubt his certainty 225.

During the attempt to capture a Ghost Shadow Tiger for Zhu Zhuqing, Zhao Wuji mocked Flender’s unsuccessful first attack. Flender threatened to dock his wages unless he helped, prompting Zhao Wuji to activate his seventh Soul Skill and charge through the surrounding Soul Beasts. His first tracked palm strike also failed when the tiger merged into the shadows 234.

The two then coordinated their attacks. Flender’s feather barrage and explosions wounded the tiger and forced it out of hiding, while Zhao Wuji’s Gravity Enhancement and sustained pressure prevented it from maintaining its shadow form. Zhao Wuji struck its lower back with Great Strength Vajra Palm, sending it more than ten meters away. Despite initially appearing incapacitated, the tiger recovered enough to flee deeper into the forest 234.

When the Tyrannical Savage advanced on the group, Flender initially ordered Zhao Wuji to evacuate the students while the Golden Iron Triangle held it off. Qi Ling persuaded the others to remain together instead. Zhao Wuji subsequently joined the Golden Sacred Dragon in fighting the beast 237.

Because repeated use of Martial Soul Avatar had burdened Zhao Wuji and he had not fully recovered, Qi Ling gave him a Fierce God Talisman. Zhao Wuji accepted its temporary enhancement despite the subsequent weakness it would cause, activated Martial Soul Avatar again, and used Gravity Enhancement to restrict the Tyrannical Savage before charging into battle 237.

Moved to tears by the students’ determination to remain with Qi Ling, Zhao Wuji later offered to put his own life on the line and hold the beast off so that they could escape 239.

After Qi Ling returned to the academy, Zhao Wuji announced his arrival to the others. When Qi Ling revealed that he had absorbed the Tyrannical Savage’s sixty-thousand-year Soul Ring as his fourth ring, Zhao Wuji disclosed that his own seventh Soul Ring was only fifty thousand years old 242.

Rematch with Qi Ling

While Shrek and the Qilin Team were scheduled to fight Liu Erlong and Flender, Qi Ling proposed a separate match against Zhao Wuji. Zhao Wuji initially refused, recognizing that Qi Ling would not seek the fight without confidence. Flender and Liu Erlong eventually provoked his competitive spirit enough to make him agree 289.

Before the match, Zhao Wuji proposed that he forgo Martial Soul Avatar if Qi Ling refrained from using Blood Devil Slays Heaven. Qi Ling accepted the restriction on himself but encouraged Zhao Wuji to use his Avatar. Zhao Wuji then attacked immediately with Great Strength Vajra Palm, unwilling to give Qi Ling the initiative 290.

Qi Ling’s refined Dragon Controlling Force allowed him to redirect the palm’s force and drift away unharmed. Zhao Wuji countered by combining Gravity Enhancement and Position Tracking to pull him into another strike, but Qi Ling met the strengthened palm with a punch and did not retreat a single step 290.

After Qi Ling redirected another counterattack and knocked him off balance, Zhao Wuji activated Martial Soul Avatar. This restored his advantage in strength, although Qi Ling continued resisting with Golden Sacred Dragon Armor and Dragon Controlling Force. When Qi Ling prepared his fourth Soul Skill, Zhao Wuji layered Immovable Bright King Body and Immovable Wisdom King Protective Barrier over his transformed body 291.

Qi Ling then launched Gaia Energy Cannon. Zhao Wuji experienced it as an overwhelming, concentrated attack rather than a conventional explosion. The match was later recalled as a crushing defeat for Zhao Wuji despite his Soul Saint cultivation and Qi Ling’s Soul Ancestor rank 291 420.

Five-Year Reunion

Five years later, Zhao Wuji was drinking tea at Shrek when Qi Ling announced the returning group’s arrival with Nine Heavens Dragon Roar. Recognizing his voice immediately, Zhao Wuji spat out his tea, laughed at the spectacle, and rushed to the gates to welcome them. Dai Mubai greeted him with an enthusiastic bear hug 420.

By this reunion, Zhao Wuji had advanced to Soul Douluo. Nevertheless, when Qi Ling suggested another spar, he refused immediately, declaring that he could not possibly advance faster than Qi Ling and did not want another beating. Embarrassed by the others’ laughter, he singled out Ma Hongjun and threatened to give him a training match instead 420 421.

Zhao Wuji initially had difficulty recognizing Tang San after his transformation and listened to the explanation of his awakened Blue Silver Emperor Bloodline. He then escorted the returning students to see Flender, Grandmaster, and Liu Erlong. When Liu Erlong arrived in Martial Soul Possession, believing the dragon roar signaled a Spirit Hall attack, Zhao Wuji quickly explained that their former students had returned 421.

When Flender later suggested that he fight the students other than Qi Ling, Zhao Wuji again hesitated. Considering the strength of their Martial Souls, their coordination, and Ning Rongrong’s support, he tried to excuse himself by claiming a sudden stomachache 423.

Enhanced Barrett Demonstration

At Qi Ling’s demonstration of the Enhanced Barrett, Flender urged Zhao Wuji to serve as the defensive test subject, praising his defense among Soul Douluos. Zhao Wuji initially refused, suspecting another setup. Tai Tan then challenged his courage and reminded him of having hunted him down in the past, provoking Zhao Wuji into accepting 471.

The group moved to the mountain behind the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Zhao Wuji stood more than four thousand meters from Tina, activated Martial Soul Avatar, and prepared his strongest defense. When she fired, he attempted to counter the bullet with gravity several dozen times stronger than normal, but it penetrated his defensive layers and reached his chest 471 472.

Zhao Wuji drove his Martial Soul and Immovable Bright King Body to their limits until the bullet finally exhausted its energy and fell. The effort consumed almost all his Soul Power and left his limbs weak. He returned boasting that he had upheld his reputation while concealing his trembling hands, privately resolving never to accept another such test regardless of the loss of face 472.

Appearance

Zhao Wuji is tall and burly, with a massive build that becomes still more imposing during Martial Soul Possession 22 23.

  • Swelling muscles: His musculature expands when he summons the Great Strength Vajra Bear 22.
  • Bear-like fur: Fur sprouts across his transformed body, giving him the appearance of a humanoid ferocious beast 22.
  • Enlarged palm: Great Strength Vajra Palm increases the apparent size of his hand and envelops it in thick Soul Power 23.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: His full transformation takes the form of a gigantic bear. During the Titan Giant Ape encounter, it increased his height to approximately five meters and his body to more than three times its original size 54 234.

Personality

Zhao Wuji is abrasive, boastful, and intimidating. During the entrance assessment, he mocked the applicants for failing to endure even a third of the allotted time and claimed that two Soul Rings would be enough to defeat them. His confidence repeatedly led him to underestimate Qi Ling 21 22 24.

His pride does not prevent him from keeping his word or recognizing talent. He accepted the ring-sealing restriction rather than retract his boast, then admitted the students after losing. Even while nursing his resentment, he considered recruiting someone as gifted as Qi Ling a major gain for the academy 22 25.

As a teacher, Zhao Wuji combines a stern manner with practical caution. He disciplines the students, monitors threats beyond their strength, and emphasizes coordinated action during the forest expedition. He also enjoys strong liquor and responds warmly to Qi Ling’s bold, informal company 43 44 46.

Beneath his rough manner, he is deeply protective of his students. He charged the Titan Giant Ape to cover their escape and later offered to sacrifice himself against the Tyrannical Savage. The students’ refusal to abandon one another moved him to tears 54 239.

His concern for his reputation makes him susceptible to provocation, particularly from Flender and Tai Tan. This led him to accept both the rematch with Qi Ling and the Barrett test despite his misgivings. Nevertheless, his respect for Qi Ling eventually became open wariness: even after reaching Soul Douluo, he immediately refused another spar 289 420 471.

Abilities & Skills

Great Strength Vajra Bear

Zhao Wuji’s Martial Soul specializes in strength and defense rather than speed 23.

  • Grants a powerful bear-like transformation with enlarged muscles and fur 22.
  • Provides defenses capable of enduring hundreds of Qi Ling’s claw strikes without even a small scratch 24.
  • Its limited speed makes rapid attacks difficult to evade, encouraging reliance on defensive and pursuit skills 23 24.
  • Allows him to charge directly through groups of Soul Beasts, knocking those in his path unconscious by collision while in Martial Soul Avatar 234.

First Soul Skill: Immovable Bright King Body

A defensive skill that hardens Zhao Wuji’s body like steel and surrounds it with protective Soul Power 22.

  • Dramatically increases his defense despite coming from a hundred-year Soul Ring 22.
  • Remained intact when Zhao Wuji deliberately yielded to Tyrant Dragon Fist’s momentum 23.
  • Does not prevent the Blood Devil Emperor from stealing Soul Power through attacks that cause negligible physical damage 24.
  • Can be layered with Martial Soul Avatar and Immovable Wisdom King Protective Barrier for stronger protection 291.
  • Served as his final defense against Tina’s Barrett round after it penetrated his other defensive layers. Stopping the bullet required almost all his Soul Power 472.

Second Soul Skill: Great Strength Vajra Palm

An offensive palm strike that enlarges his hand and concentrates thick Soul Power around it 23.

  • Overpowered Qi Ling’s weakened follow-up Tyrant Dragon Fist 23.
  • Works with Position Tracking to force opponents into direct exchanges 23.
  • Sent the wounded Ghost Shadow Tiger flying more than ten meters after it could no longer maintain its shadow form 234.
  • Remains formidable even against other Soul Saints: Flender and Liu Erlong judged that they could not receive it in a completely undefended state 290.
  • Was matched head-on by Qi Ling’s punch during their later spar, forcing Zhao Wuji to rely on Martial Soul Avatar to regain a strength advantage 290 291.

Third Soul Skill: Gravity Enhancement

Increases the gravity acting on an opponent to reduce their speed 24.

  • Combines with Position Tracking to counter agile opponents 24.
  • Was ineffective against Night Devil’s Frenzied Cry, which nullifies slowing effects 24.
  • Can multiply a training load tenfold, making Qi Ling’s forty-jin basket weigh four hundred jin and increasing any additional load by the same ratio 75.
  • Restricted the injured Ghost Shadow Tiger and helped prevent it from maintaining its shadow form 234.
  • Slowed the Tyrannical Savage while Zhao Wuji fought alongside the Golden Sacred Dragon 237.
  • In combination with Position Tracking, generated a pulling force that drew Qi Ling toward an incoming palm strike 290.

Fourth Soul Skill: Position Tracking

A pursuit skill that allows Zhao Wuji to follow an opponent’s position and compensate for his own lack of speed 23.

  • Prevented Qi Ling from escaping a head-on confrontation while using the Divine Dragon Emperor 23.
  • Could not locate Qi Ling while Night Devil’s Frenzied Cry nullified lock-on effects 24.
  • Lost its target when the Ghost Shadow Tiger transformed into shadow and merged into the ground 234.
  • Can be combined with Gravity Enhancement to draw a target into close-range attacks 290.

Seventh Soul Skill: Martial Soul Avatar

Transforms Zhao Wuji fully into a gigantic Great Strength Vajra Bear, substantially increasing his combat power. His seventh Soul Ring is fifty thousand years old 234 242.

  • Increased his height to approximately five meters during the Titan Giant Ape battle, but could not bridge the enormous difference in their strength 54.
  • Allowed him to overpower Qi Ling in raw strength during their later spar, requiring Qi Ling to rely on Golden Sacred Dragon Armor and Dragon Controlling Force 291.
  • Repeated activation within a single day places a substantial burden on him at the Soul Saint stage 237.
  • Remained central to his all-out defense after advancing to Soul Douluo 471 472.

Gravity Reversal

A gravity-based ability demonstrated during the Sunset Forest expedition. Its Soul Ring position was not specified 234.

  • Creates a repelling effect around his body that hurls away Soul Beasts attempting to attack him from the flanks or leap onto him 234.

Immovable Wisdom King Protective Barrier

A defensive Soul Skill that creates a thick protective shield around his body. Its Soul Ring position was not specified 291.

  • Its visible thickness exceeded that of Dai Mubai’s protective barrier 291.
  • Used together with Martial Soul Avatar and Immovable Bright King Body in preparation for Qi Ling’s Gaia Energy Cannon 291.

Temporary Enhancement: Fierce God Talisman

An external talisman supplied by Qi Ling rather than an innate ability 237.

  • Greatly enhances all attributes for a short period, followed by a period of weakness 237.
  • Strengthened Zhao Wuji’s Martial Soul Avatar sufficiently for him to join the Golden Sacred Dragon against the Tyrannical Savage despite his incomplete recovery 237.

Combat Experience and Soul Power Control

Zhao Wuji retains significant advantages beyond his available Soul Skills, including a Soul Saint’s physique, mental strength, and refined control of Soul Power 22.

  • Identified the limitations of Tyrant Dragon Fist and deliberately retreated with its force to preserve his defenses 23.
  • Immediately detected the tiny amount of Soul Power stolen by Qi Ling’s first Blood Devil Emperor attacks 24.
  • Recognized that a prolonged fight against a Soul Power-draining opponent would be disadvantageous 24.
  • Coordinated effectively with Flender during the Ghost Shadow Tiger hunt, drawing on more than a decade of partnership 234.
  • Adapted his gravity and tracking combination to counter Qi Ling’s force-redirection technique during their rematch 290.
  • At the Soul Douluo stage, could exert gravity several dozen times stronger than normal in an attempt to stop an incoming Barrett round, though this alone did not halt it 472.

Relationships

  • Qi Ling — Student who defeated him under ring-sealing restrictions. Their initially antagonistic encounter developed into informal drinking companionship and growing respect for Qi Ling’s strength 22 25 43 44. Zhao Wuji later fought beside him against the Tyrannical Savage and suffered another crushing defeat when Qi Ling was a Soul Ancestor. By their five-year reunion, he openly refused further spars, though he subsequently served as the defensive test subject for Qi Ling’s Enhanced Barrett 237 291 420 471 472.
  • Flender — Shrek Academy’s headmaster, under whom Zhao Wuji serves as vice headmaster. Flender entrusted him with leading Oscar’s Soul Ring expedition 21 41. They have been comrades and combat partners for more than a decade, although Flender frequently teases him, threatens his wages, or provokes him into difficult assignments 234 289 471.
  • Dai Mubai — Student whom Zhao Wuji instructed to escort the successful applicants to their dormitories. Dai Mubai remained too intimidated to drink with him as casually as Qi Ling did 25 43. He refused to abandon Zhao Wuji during the Titan Giant Ape attack and greeted him with an enthusiastic bear hug at their five-year reunion 54 420.
  • Oscar — Student whose third Soul Ring hunt Zhao Wuji supervised; he captured the suitable serpent and explained how to kill it 46.
  • Tang Hao — Tang San’s father, who beat Zhao Wuji for injuring his son and ordered him to conceal the incident 26.
  • Chao Tianxiang — Rival claimant to Oscar’s intended Soul Beast. Zhao Wuji negotiated with her while remaining wary of her partnership with Dragon Duke 47 48.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Fellow Shrek teacher who explained the dangers and requirements of Qi Ling’s twin Martial Souls. Zhao Wuji assisted his physical training program by applying Gravity Enhancement to Qi Ling’s weights 62 75.
  • Qin Ming — Former Shrek student who greeted Zhao Wuji and Flender as his teachers when visiting after the Imperial Fighting Team’s match 120.
  • Liu Erlong — Fellow teacher who helped Flender provoke Zhao Wuji into accepting Qi Ling’s rematch. Zhao Wuji later reassured her that the powerful dragon roar at the academy came from their returning students rather than an enemy attack 289 421.
  • Ma Hongjun — Student whose poisoning prompted Zhao Wuji to order a return to town for medicine. At the five-year reunion, Zhao Wuji threatened to train him after he laughed at Zhao Wuji’s refusal to spar with Qi Ling 49 420 421.
  • Tai Tan — A more powerful Soul Master whose arrival initially made Zhao Wuji visibly anxious. Tai Tan later referred to having hunted him down in the past and used this history to provoke him into participating in the Barrett demonstration 195 471.
  • Tina — Soul Hunting Squad member who fired the Enhanced Barrett at him during its demonstration. Zhao Wuji barely stopped her shot despite preparing his strongest defense 471 472.
