During Orochimaru’s attack on Konoha, Shinsei hunted down Kabuto Yakushi, then rushed home to protect his mother and father from the rampaging snakes. After defeating nearby threats and forcing Sand ninja to surrender, he received an emergency mission from Wood Kite.

• Shinsei broke free of the genjutsu, left the civilian evacuation to his teammates, and pursued Kabuto Yakushi.
• Shinsei tracked Kabuto through a cloud of mist and pierced his heart with a Lightning Sword, killing him.
• Shinsei raced toward home, rescuing a little girl from a giant snake along the way and killing other snakes in his path.
• Shinsei found his mother hiding at home, moved her into a basement for safety, and then brought his armed father there too.
• Shinsei cleared the area of giant snakes and defeated several Sand ninja, who surrendered to him.

Shinsei went after Naruto and Sasuke as they pursued Gaara, who transformed into the One-Tail Shukaku. Naruto asked to face Gaara himself, and Shinsei agreed before heading to help him.

• Wood Kite ordered Shinsei to check on Naruto and Sasuke after Gaara fled, and Shinsei set off toward the outskirts of Konoha.
• A wounded white-haired young man recovered in the woods and staggered toward the village outskirts while Hiruzen Sarutobi battled Hashirama Senju and another Hokage inside the barrier.

Shinsei, Naruto, and Gamabunta worked together to defeat Shukaku and wake Gaara, but Kakashi lured Shinsei away and trapped him in a Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique. The chapter ended with Naruto rushing toward the enormous pit where Shinsei had vanished.

• Shinsei fought Shukaku with Water Release techniques and cut off one of the beast's arms with a Chakra sword.

After surviving a Root attack, Shinsei learned that the Third Hokage had died and Orochimaru had escaped, leaving Konoha to choose its next leader. He sought intelligence on Tsunade and Root, then entered a Root base under cover of night.

• Shinsei revealed that the Kakashi who attacked him was an impostor, and he reunited with Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Temari.
• Shinsei returned to Konoha, confirmed his parents were safe, and learned from Wood Kite that the Third Hokage had died while Orochimaru escaped.
• Wood Kite told Shinsei that the elders favored Jiraiya for Hokage, and Shinsei asked for intelligence on Tsunade's whereabouts.
• Shinsei recounted Root's attack and asked Wood Kite for Root intelligence, which Wood Kite gave him.

Shinjō flooded a Root base, stole documents, and fought Danzo and his masked ninja before escaping. Back home, Shinsei examined the stolen research and was interrupted by someone knocking at his front door.

• Shinjō used Water Release to overwhelm Root ninja and reach the base’s equipment and documents.
• Shinjō and another masked Shinjō destroyed equipment, collected documents, and escaped through a hole in the ceiling.
• Danzo and fifty or sixty masked Konoha ninja confronted Shinjō, who fought them with a water dog until his chakra ran out.
• Shinjō discovered that the Danzo he had cut in half was a shadow clone, then returned home with stolen ninjutsu scrolls and experimental data.
• Shinjō sorted through the documents, including research on Wood Release and kekkei genkai, before someone knocked at his front door.

After Hiruzen Sarutobi’s funeral, Shinsei learned that Konoha would not let him leave to search for Tsunade, then received unexpected warmth from his neighbors. The chapter ended with him spotting two Akatsuki figures on Konoha’s outer wall.

• Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura confronted Shinsei about attacking Root, but Shinsei denied it and challenged them over Danzo’s attacks; they agreed to rein in Danzo and left with Wood Kite.
• Shinsei’s parents, Nobita and Riya, comforted him after the elders left.
• Shinsei attended Hiruzen Sarutobi’s funeral, where he exchanged a silent glance with Danzo.

• Shinsei recognized Uchiha Itachi and Kisame in Konoha and sent a warning to Jiraiya.
• Kisame drained Naruto's chakra with Samehada until Shinsei struck the sword away and rescued Naruto.

• Might Guy accidentally kicked Jiraiya, then apologized when Naruto stopped him, while Kakashi arrived late with an excuse about a black cat.

• Sasuke used Lightning Release to attack Kimimaro, but Kimimaro blocked his blows and wounded his knee with bone spikes.
• Kimimaro broke both of Sasuke’s kunai, forcing Sasuke to switch to ninjutsu.
• Sasuke struck Kimimaro’s Cursed Seal second-stage bone armor with Chidori and pierced his abdomen, but Kimimaro regenerated around the wound.
• Sasuke attacked with the Great Fireball Technique, but Kimimaro’s bone armor endured the blast, and Kimimaro fired bone bullets at Sasuke.
• Kimimaro’s Dance of the Larch cut Sasuke, who jumped into a tree and considered retreating to Konoha.
• Kimimaro mocked Sasuke as a coward, and Sasuke’s Sharingan spun as his expression turned cold.

Tsunade sent Shinsei to gather the genin and bring Sasuke Uchiha back, while Naruto fought the Sound Ninja under the influence of the Nine-Tails’ chakra. Naruto tore through the enemy’s attacks as Sakura fled toward the training ground to save Sasuke.

• Tayuya, Jirobo, and Kidomaru confronted Naruto, whose chakra formed a second tail as he prepared to attack.
• An Anbu operative reported Naruto’s situation to Tsunade, who sent Shinsei to gather his classmates and retrieve Sasuke Uchiha.

• Shikamaru, Ino, Kiba Inuzuka, and Neji Hyuga assigned opponents, and Ino sent the three-tailed Naruto after Sakon.

Elsewhere, Orochimaru told Kabuto that the mission to bring Sasuke back was only meant to plant a seed of power in his heart, and urged Kabuto to leave his past behind.

• Shikamaru used his Shadow Possession Jutsu to restrain Tayuya, and Choji charged her with Human Bullet Tank.
• Tenten’s explosive tags drove Kidomaru from his position, Lee struck him with Konoha Whirlwind, and Neji followed with Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms.
• Shino’s insects weakened Jirobo, Kiba and Akamaru knocked him back, and Hinata used Mind Body Switch Technique to hold him still before striking him with Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms.
• Asuma, Kurenai, Kakashi, and Might Guy discussed Kakashi’s plans to learn a new ninjutsu, and Guy celebrated Lee’s victory with an emotional embrace.
• Orochimaru told Kabuto that Kimimaro and the others were expendable tools meant to push Sasuke toward seeking power, then urged Kabuto to say goodbye to his past.

Shinsei fought Kimimaro through his bone-based techniques, using lightning chakra swords and a massive Water Release technique to overcome Dance of the Seedling Fern. He pulled the dying Kimimaro from beneath the battlefield, and Kimimaro died after declaring his faith in Orochimaru.

• Kimimaro attacked Shinsei with Dance of the Willow and Dance of the Larch, but Shinsei severed his bones with Lightning Release: Lightning Swords.
• Kimimaro used Dance of the Seedling Fern to fill the battlefield with bone spikes and repeatedly appear near Shinsei.
• Shinsei raised himself above the battlefield with Water Release: Great Water Shockwave, then flooded the ground to limit Kimimaro's movements.
• Shinsei spun the water into a vast Rasengan-like current that broke through the bones and exposed Kimimaro deep underground.

Sasuke asked Tsunade to take him as her student after she returned the Uchiha Clan's records to him. Tsunade began teaching Shinsei how to develop storm release, explaining that he would need to find the right chakra ratio himself.

• Shinsei visited Sakura and Naruto in the hospital, then told Sasuke that Tsunade wanted to see him.
