Background / History
Original Life and Exile
Li Wensong originally cultivated in the Hongmeng Holy Realm. While investigating a Buddhist faction, he discovered that it secretly extracted believers’ souls and fortune to refine the Sarira of Cause and Effect. He destroyed a branch temple holding imprisoned souls and killed several Great Dao Realm cultivators, eventually drawing the attention of Buddha Venerable Du'e, also called Duer 762 813.
Duer defeated him, severed a vital portion of his cause and effect, and destroyed his Great Dao Sacred Origin. Li Wensong survived by burning his origin and using a realm-breaking treasure to flee into the Nine Directions and Ten Domains. His incomplete cause and effect prevented him from restoring his original Great Dao, even with another Sacred Origin 811 813.
According to his later account, he first noticed Lu Qing'an approximately ten billion years before their present-day association. Although he could examine other people’s pasts and futures, Lu Qing'an’s remained unreadable. After observing multiple reincarnations, he concluded that Lu Qing'an was a powerful being cultivating the Great Dao of Reincarnation. This was Li Wensong’s interpretation, not an independently established explanation of Lu Qing'an’s identity 762.
Li Wensong eventually entered slumber and attempted reincarnation himself. He arranged to recover his memories during Lu Qing'an’s final life; until that recovery, his uncertainty and reactions when they first met were genuine 762.
Meeting Lu Qing'an
As a Peak Sovereign Realm rogue cultivator from the Heavenly Fall Continent, Li Wensong had known Dan Yun for hundreds of millions of years. After failing an Eternal Realm breakthrough, he informed her that he intended to stop cultivating and visit her to establish a contract 500 529.
Dan Yun’s account of Lu Qing'an’s cultivation transfers made him question Lu’s strength. He initially tested Lu Qing'an’s claims, then apologized and accepted three tasks in exchange for consideration for breakthrough assistance. His first assignment was to gather nearby Heavenly Daos; another concerned the Xu Household 524 528 529.
He returned with the Heavenly Daos of nearby Fourth and Fifth Heaven continents. Although the Divine Continent’s Heavenly Dao refused his invitation, Lu Qing'an accepted the assignment as completed 558.
The Xu Household Dispute
Li Wensong worked with Qiao Yuqin and Xu Man to investigate the Xu Household before confronting it. Learning that Xu Heng had gained strength, awakened a special bloodline, and attracted influential backing made him approach the task more cautiously 564 583 587 600.
At the household’s banquet, he openly supported Xu Man against Xu Heng and Xu Sheng. When Qian Mingjing intervened, Li Wensong demanded Xu Sheng’s death and insisted that Xu Man decide Xu Heng’s fate. Even after Qian Mingjing’s Eternal Realm pressure made him vomit blood, he challenged the stronger cultivator to fight 604 609.
He subsequently persuaded Qian Mingjing that Lu Qing'an was a Peak Eternal Realm master directing a vast plan. His efforts helped bring the Qian Household Chamber of Commerce to the Eternal Night Continent, earning Lu Qing'an’s explicit promise to secure his breakthrough 616 620 626.
Recruiting Lu Qing'an’s “Chess Pieces”
Li Wensong built a network around the belief that Lu Qing'an had mastered the Rule of Cause and Effect and arranged events across the Nine Directions and Ten Domains. He presented service to Lu as the privileged position of becoming a “chess piece,” with himself as the foremost member 632 660.
His recruits and associates included the Qian brothers, Chen Lingling, Heavenly Daos, and eventually Peak Eternal Realm experts. Lu Qing'an recognized that these elaborate explanations were often Li Wensong’s own constructions, but encouraged him because they brought capable followers into his circle 640 642 664 696 703.
In the Fallen God Sea, Li Wensong received an inheritance from a fallen Peak Eternal Realm expert. Lu Qing'an checked that he had not been possessed, and the inheritance and corpse subsequently enabled his Early Eternal Realm breakthrough 683 695.
He later helped introduce the artifact refiners Chu Xuantie and Leng Xinghe to Lu Qing'an. Acting without orders, he also persuaded Zhang Tianshi to bring the entire Celestial Master Manor Daoist Sanctuary into the Eternal Night Sect 719 745 746.
Return to the Hongmeng Holy Realm
After Lu Qing'an questioned his hidden strength, Li Wensong disclosed his original identity and recovered memories. He committed himself to following Lu Qing'an back to the Hongmeng Holy Realm and received three powerful treasures before their departure 762 763 770.
The two passed through a hidden world and a five-colored portal, arriving in the realm’s far north. With his remaining friends located in the distant Central Land Great Domain, Li Wensong instead accompanied Lu Qing'an into the Nether Emperor Holy Sect, where they established neighboring cave abodes 772 774 799.
Reckoning with Duer
Li Wensong initially intended to restore his Great Dao of Cause and Effect, but the damage left by Duer made a replacement Sacred Origin insufficient. Lu Qing'an helped him regain his Great Dao and promised to accompany him for revenge after completing his own cultivation 802 811 813 814.
They traveled to the Great Brahma Buddha Sect in the Westernmost Buddhist Domain. Li Wensong called out Duer through the Great Dao of Cause and Effect and fought him despite still having an incomplete Great Dao and suffering severe injuries 817 818.
After reclaiming his missing cause and effect, Li Wensong dismantled Duer’s connections to his Buddhist power and treasures. Lu Qing'an stopped Duer’s attempted self-destruction, allowing Li Wensong to deliver the killing blow. Afterward, Li Wensong asked for a drink; he later returned to Lu Qing'an’s courtyard 819 822.
Appearance
- Elderly appearance: Described as an ordinary, amiable old man when he withdraws his intimidating presence 523.
- Beard: Strokes his beard while offering advice to Li Muchen 710.
- Refined demeanor: Frequently wears a composed smile and presents himself with an assured, almost leisurely bearing 621 745 746.
Personality
Li Wensong is socially shrewd and willing to set aside pride for an opportunity. Before accepting Lu Qing'an’s tasks, he tried to learn all three conditions to avoid completing difficult work only to discover an impossible final demand. Once convinced that Lu could help him, he apologized with such enthusiasm that Dan Yun barely recognized his behavior 528.
His confidence in Lu Qing'an becomes the foundation of his public conduct. He treats coincidences, delays, and casual remarks as evidence of a larger design, then persuades others to adopt the same interpretation. He also enjoys the prestige of being called “Brother Song,” including by cultivators far stronger than himself 621 636 696 710.
His loyalty is practical as well as verbal: he investigates assignments carefully, recruits allies without waiting for orders, and withstands threats from stronger opponents. His confrontation with Qian Mingjing demonstrates genuine courage beneath his flattering manner 587 609 745 746.
His original conflict with the Great Brahma Buddha Sect began because he refused to ignore imprisoned souls. When recounting it, his usual lightheartedness gives way to restrained anger. He also respects personal boundaries, choosing not to discuss Lu Qing'an’s family history carelessly 803 813 818.
