Xiao Qingyi grew up with his childhood sweetheart, Zeng Qiuya. His original cultivation talent was unexceptional, and he was only one major realm above her, although this gave him roughly a thousand additional years of life. During her final thousand years, they stopped concealing their feelings and married after their hair had already turned silver. He remained with her until she died in his arms 358 389.

After her death, Xiao Qingyi spent more than a hundred years in a daze. He eventually entered a high-level secret realm prepared to die, but instead obtained a supreme treasure and developed the Heavenly Thunder Physique. This transformed him into a top genius and gave him a second Dao Path late in life. His aged appearance reflects how little lifespan he had left before this transformation 358.

The sword later known as the Thunderblaze Sword was the first gift from the woman he loved and the last surviving gift from her. Originally a low-grade weapon, it was repeatedly upgraded to keep pace with his cultivation 339.

Friendship and Lu Qing'an's Absence

Xiao Qingyi has known Lu Qing'an for tens of thousands of years. Their friendship developed through fighting and bickering, rather than beginning on consistently friendly terms. After Lu Qing'an disappeared from the Demon Domain, Xiao Qingyi searched for him alongside Xue Tianfei, eventually concluding that they would never find him unless he wanted to be found. Xue Tianfei refused to accept his withdrawal and punished him for missing daily reports 13 15 19.

The two were originally rivals with conflicting ideals, although not mortal enemies. Lu Qing'an repeatedly defeated and teased him, while Xiao Qingyi refused to concede. Their relationship changed when an organization ambushed Xiao Qingyi: the people he regarded as friends failed to help, but Lu Qing'an intervened in what should have been a fatal situation 75.

Around five hundred years before Lu Qing'an's return, his contracted black dragon, Little Blackie, appeared in Demon Descent City. Xiao Qingyi kept the dragon nearby and repeatedly questioned him about his master's whereabouts. Little Blackie eventually left without warning, taking Xiao Qingyi's strongest weapon, the Thunderblaze Sword 14.

Reunion in Demon Descent City

Xiao Qingyi first appears investigating a disturbance after Lu Qing'an kills a Walking Corpse Sect expert. He initially arrives amid thunderclouds and overwhelming pressure, but immediately dismisses them upon recognizing his old friend's voice. His stern entrance gives way to an excited reunion and astonishment that Lu Qing'an has returned with daughters 10 11.

When Lu Qing'an decides to settle in the city, Xiao Qingyi gives him a secluded residence modeled exactly on Lu Qing'an's former courtyard. He welcomes Lu Zixuan, Lu Miaomiao, and Sun Minzi, prepares food for them, and reveals Lu Qing'an's identity as the Eternal Night Demon Emperor to the younger generation 11 12.

Over wine, Xiao Qingyi learns about Lu Qing'an's divorce from Xu Qingying and offers unconditional support. He also tells him about Xue Tianfei's thousand-year search, including her injuries in the Immortal Ruins, and encourages him to consider her affection 13.

Helping the Household

Xiao Qingyi transmits his cultivation technique to both daughters. Lu Zixuan's constitution proves only about ninety percent compatible, while Lu Miaomiao immediately produces purple lightning—something none of his previous disciples achieved upon beginning the technique. He recommends Xue Tianfei's technique for Zixuan and summons her at Lu Qing'an's request 14 15.

While Lu Qing'an visits the Heavenfall Demon Cavern, Xiao Qingyi contacts Wang Duanshan about building an artifact-refining room for He Hong. Wang initially refuses to believe him because Xiao Qingyi previously used a false claim of Lu Qing'an's return to obtain artifact-refining help. After Wang arrives, Xiao Qingyi and He Hong help prevent a fight between him and Xue Tianfei 25 33.

He later watches Lu Qing'an's confrontation with Li Cangxuan and is pleased when their master-disciple relationship improves. He remains affectionate toward Li Cangxuan, whom he has known since childhood 62 64.

When Lu Zixuan's friends visit, Xiao Qingyi brings extra ingredients for the gathering. The young women recognize him as Great Emperor Leixiao and bow, only to be astonished by Lu Qing'an's casual treatment of him. Although initially upset that Xu Yunyi has brewed all his hidden Demon God Mother Tree tea leaves, he quickly cheers up after Lu Qing'an promises replacements 82.

Demon Willow Academy

Xiao Qingyi helps Lu Qing'an seek admission to Demon Willow Academy for the younger members of the household. Through his youngest disciple, Song Xu, he learns when the elusive academy head will return and proposes intercepting him at the academy 44 45.

During their visit, Lu Hong refuses them access to the Time-Reversing Demon Willow. Xiao Qingyi releases his Peak Great Emperor Realm presence to intimidate him, then privately explains that Lu Qing'an's former disciple has claimed the Demon Emperor title and publicly boasted of surpassing his master. Having watched that disciple grow up, Xiao Qingyi hopes to prevent a lasting rupture between them 46 47.

After Lu Qing'an subdues the academy experts who intervene, Xiao Qingyi accompanies him to meet Dean Liu Xiyue. He initially fears violence when the dean insists on the normal admission assessment. Later, he identifies the mysterious energy mass Lu Qing'an carries as a means of threatening the Time-Reversing Demon Willow; Liu Xiyue consequently agrees that the rules can be bent 48 50.

When the discussion turns to paying for cultivation resources, Xiao Qingyi admits that he has not accumulated demon crystals because his own cultivation no longer requires them. He jokingly proposes robbery as an alternative source of funds 51.

Cold Crystal Forbidden Land and His Disciples' Betrayal

After learning that his second disciple has disappeared in the Cold Crystal Forbidden Land, Xiao Qingyi leaves to search for him. He repeatedly reassures Lu Qing'an that he is close to finding the disciple, but ultimately becomes trapped alongside other Peak Great Emperor Realm experts. Lu Qing'an releases them after taking control of the forbidden land 103 113 127.

Long Ya subsequently explains that the Blood Phoenix Sect imprisoned his senior brother after he severely injured its Holy Son, then sent Long Ya into the forbidden land to find a Majiaduo Gem. Neither Xiao Qingyi nor Lu Qing'an has heard of this supposed treasure, leading them to suspect that the errand was fabricated to draw them into a trap 128 129.

Much later, Little Blackie admits that he planned the Cold Crystal Forbidden Land incident. He reveals that two of Xiao Qingyi's disciples accepted promised benefits in exchange for helping lure Lu Qing'an there, although they did not understand the plan's full danger. Xiao Qingyi is stunned by the realization that his disciples betrayed him 339.

Divine Crystal Advancement and Demon Domain Activities

Xiao Qingyi befriends Xu Xuanyu after the latter joins the household. Their shared appetite for gossip and spectacles quickly draws them together, and Xiao Qingyi helps him finish cleaning the courtyard so they can accompany Lu Qing'an to watch the Dao of Alchemy Master's sparring match 128 131 149 150.

He later defeats Luo Zhi after a prolonged fight, although the victory requires considerably more effort than before. Lu Qing'an warns that Luo Zhi's developing Heavenly Devil Physique may eventually allow him to overtake Xiao Qingyi. Xiao Qingyi then accompanies Lu Qing'an, Xue Tianfei, Luo Zhi, and the Heaven-Devouring Devil Beast to the Demon Race's secret realm 196.

Lu Qing'an gives Xiao Qingyi an activated earth-attribute Divine Crystal, which he refines into his Dantian. His cultivation rapidly approaches that of the Dao of Alchemy Master, with further improvement possible from the crystal's remaining energy. At the next gathering, he deliberately displays his newfound strength to astonish the arriving guests, then teaches the others how to refine Divine Crystal 229 231 232.

He subsequently confronts Great Emperor Yin Mountain, overwhelming the mountain with lightning and cultivation pressure. Yin Mountain recognizes that Xiao Qingyi now possesses strength comparable to the Eternal Night Demon Emperor before his disappearance 241.

When Lu Zhengran mistakes him for the Eternal Night Demon Emperor, Xiao Qingyi plays along with Lu Qing'an's tacit approval. He signs a portrait, invents a shared childhood with Lu Qing'an, and falsely denies Lu Zixuan's actual cultivation progress, leaving Zhengran convinced that his sister has deceived him 248.

Dragon Provisions and the Saber God

At Lu Qing'an's request, Xiao Qingyi approaches the Nether Bone Dragon to obtain dragon kidneys for the household's meals. Rather than taking the dragon's remaining kidney, he persuades it to recruit other dragons. He selects the sea dragon and sky dragon from the images shown to him and agrees to the suggestion of obtaining a flying flame dragon's heart as well 264.

The resulting supply arrangement develops into the Nether Bone Dragon's Kidney-Nourishing Dragon Group. Xiao Qingyi reports its plan to trade kidneys for Divine Crystal, and he and Lu Qing'an discuss the need to find additional crystals to maintain the arrangement. Dragon kidneys are especially beneficial to Lu Miaomiao's physical development and strength 285.

Xiao Qingyi also participates in training against the Saber God, initially enduring eight moves. When Luo Danhong later loses the Saber God's trail at the East Sea, Xiao Qingyi suggests seeking the Azure Sea Dragon's help. During the eventual recovery, he can withstand the Saber God's attacks but cannot readily imprison him; Lu Qing'an restrains the Saber God, allowing Xiao Qingyi to bring him back 272 304 307.

His Late Wife and Encounters Beyond the Domain

Little Blackie eventually returns the Thunderblaze Sword in good condition. Xiao Qingyi reveals its importance as a keepsake from the woman he loved and privately acknowledges that his earlier claim of being unable to defeat Xue Tianfei without it was an excuse to make Lu Qing'an recover the weapon quickly 339.

After drunkenly recounting his past, Xiao Qingyi learns that his friends now know about his marriage and bereavement. Despite embarrassment over his drunken behavior, he openly maintains that he still loves his wife and does not care if others laugh at him 358.

When Han Chuyao appears among the experts from beyond the domain, Xiao Qingyi is shocked by her resemblance to Zeng Qiuya. After Lu Qing'an captures her, he asks whether she knows Zeng Qiuya and requests permission to examine her leg. Han Chuyao says she has never heard the name; the resemblance alone does not establish that she is his wife 382 389.

Xiao Qingyi accompanies the group supporting Xu Xuanyu and Xu Yunyi during their return to the Immortal Ruins. He helps Xue Tianfei encourage Lu Zhengran to return with them and joins her in making deliberately ambiguous remarks about an upcoming wedding, allowing Xu Qingying to mistake Li Cangxuan's wedding for Lu Qing'an's 365 370 371.

Witnessing the power of the invading Divine Realm experts makes Xiao Qingyi and the other courtyard residents more conscious of their limitations. They resolve to devote more time to cultivation rather than relying entirely on Lu Qing'an 397 417.

Pill Cloud Continent

During the group's activities on the Pill Cloud Continent, Xiao Qingyi promises to handle publicity while Xu Xuanyu concentrates on alchemy. After Hao Meiqi and Wang Hao lose a wager, he allows Hao Meiqi to surrender all her valuables instead of kneeling and barking, but requires Wang Hao to perform the agreed humiliation 501 511.

He then uses Hao Meiqi's surrendered fortune to fund public challenges against Xu Xuanyu and the Dao of Alchemy Master. The reward attracts numerous One-Mystery Alchemists, providing the two with opponents while Xu Xuanyu earns respect by freely explaining the defeated contestants' mistakes 511.

Eternal Night Continent and Later Cultivation

After reaching a bottleneck before the Reincarnation Realm, Xiao Qingyi breaks through with the Power of the Dao Source supplied by Cang Ru and the other strengthened Heavenly Daos. Lu Qing'an arranges for the courtyard's new Reincarnation Realm cultivators to train on Third Heaven and lower continents under Heavenly Dao supervision while searching for continents sharing the Eternal Night Continent's origin 566.

When Lu Qing'an returns from the Heavenly Fall Continent, Xiao Qingyi welcomes him and receives a lightning-type Seven Mysteries supreme treasure. In the later everyday-life extra, Xiao Qingyi and the Nether Bone Dragon obtain a kidney from a Dragon Clan imperial family member and escape pursuit through the imperial city. They return to the courtyard, where Xiao Qingyi exchanges teasing remarks with Lu Qing'an's children and joins the wider household reunion 823.

Beneath the joking, he is perceptive enough to recognize Lu Qing'an's distress over his marriage before being told what happened 10 13.

He is particularly fond of children despite initially claiming never to have married or raised any himself. He envies Lu Qing'an's good fortune, delights in being called “Grandpa Xiao,” and promises to search the entire Demon Domain for techniques suited to the girls. When Miaomiao asks for more food, he goes straight to the kitchen despite teasing her appetite. His mischievous side appears in matchmaking, practical schemes, and enjoying other people's confrontations. He watches Xue Tianfei's romantic advances with undisguised interest and later eats watermelon with Song Xu while Lu Qing'an handles the academy's challengers. His past deception of Wang Duanshan also leaves him struggling to make a truthful summons believable 16 25 48.

He takes particular pride in supporting Lu Qing'an and Xue Tianfei's relationship. He reassures Xue Tianfei, subtly discourages Hu Xinxin's competing hopes, and continues celebrating the couple's affection long after they become openly attached. His enthusiasm culminates in helping welcome guests at their wedding 62 200 556 618 751.

Xiao Qingyi enjoys showing off and is willing to be shameless when asking Lu Qing'an for gifts or assistance.
