Power Progression

Background / History

Lu Qing'an rose to power through conflict in the Demon Domain. During his Emperor Realm breakthrough, the experts who gathered were enemies seeking to exploit his vulnerability. He survived their interference, defeated them, and continued fighting until his remaining enemies submitted and he became Demon Emperor 2.

An earlier expedition into the Heavenfall Demon Cavern nearly killed him but yielded materials for his weapons. He also obtained the Immortal-Slaying Black Flame there, an opportunity he regards as the beginning of his rise to become the Demon Domain's strongest person. Wang Duanshan forged his divine equipment, which Lu Qing'an used in his campaigns 21 24 25 34.

After growing weary of bloodshed, he came to value a peaceful life. He left the Demon Domain, concealed his identity and cultivation, and lived in the Immortal Ruins for more than a thousand years. He Hong was the first person he met there and introduced him to Xu Qingying, whom he married. They had three children: Lu Zixuan, Lu Zhengran, and Lu Miaomiao 2 4.

Before leaving his former position, he also raised a gifted disciple who became an emperor exceptionally quickly. Although successful in cultivation, the disciple grew withdrawn, friendless, and strongly inclined toward slaughter—an outcome Lu Qing'an later sought to avoid when educating his daughters 44.

The disciple is Li Cangxuan, whom Lu Qing'an found as a starving, badly beaten child dying in the snow. Lu Qing'an raised him and eventually came to regard him as his own son. His departure without saying goodbye left Li Cangxuan with a profound sense of abandonment, which surfaces when they reunite more than a thousand years later 62 63 64.

Lu Qing'an retains memories of a previous life. His parents died in an accident while traveling to find work shortly after his birth, and his grandmother raised him. He later recognizes that he imposed his own experience of hardship too strongly on Lu Zhengran because both were boys 133 147 244.

His acquaintance with Xue Tianfei predates his Emperor Realm breakthrough. While still in the Saint King Realm, he fought more than a dozen Great Emperor Realm experts, killed ten, and escaped with severe injuries. He recuperated in her family's home, where she saw his unmasked appearance and began taking an interest in him. Her admiration deepened as she learned about his deeds and watched his eventual rise to emperor 147.

After his divorce, his renewed pursuit of strength expands from protecting his daughters to supporting a large household and network of allies. By contracting Heavenly Daos and supplying cultivation for continental advancement, he becomes the master of the Eternal Night Continent and later develops the Eternal Night Sect 443 553 582 714 731.

Personality

Lu Qing'an is affectionate and attentive toward his children. Lu Zixuan remembers him as the parent who consistently answered their questions and watched their cultivation with pride. Although strict with Lu Zhengran, he privately considers changing his approach when he realizes his son is closer to Xu Qingying 2 4.

His gentleness contrasts sharply with his treatment of enemies. He allows Lu Zixuan to fight opponents at her own level but prevents stronger cultivators from exploiting her. Those who threaten his family face severe punishment: he demands an arm from a Saint King who covets her weapon and casually kills a Great Emperor who threatens to turn the family into walking corpses 8 9.

Despite his resentment over the divorce, he restrains himself for the children's sake and out of respect for his former marriage. He refuses reconciliation, comparing broken love to a shattered mirror, but does not blame Xu Yunyi for her sister's decisions 4 13 24.

He shares He Hong's tendency to become so absorbed in research that he forgets food and sleep. With old friends, he is irreverent and teasing; with institutions, he can be calculating, using leverage rather than immediately resorting to violence 10 21 49 50.

He is capable of acknowledging mistakes in his closest relationships. He apologizes to Li Cangxuan for leaving without saying goodbye and tells Lu Zhengran that his choice to remain with his mother requires no apology. Rather than retaining an inflexibly stern attitude, he actively considers how to become closer to his son 62 133 244.

Lu Qing'an often conceals his kindness behind dismissive language. After helping Xu Xuanyu obtain revenge, he denies involvement when Xu Yunyi thanks him; Xiao Qingyi recognizes this as his longstanding habit of caring for those around him without openly admitting it 75.

He values honesty among prospective friends and associates. When Wu Ciren asks to live near him, he agrees but warns that he despises schemes and expects sincerity. He also regards his fearsome reputation as a useful deterrent against people who might otherwise threaten his household 309 310.

His confidence in battle coexists with practical concern for weaker companions. He excludes Xue Tianfei and Xiao Qingyi from a potentially dangerous meeting with Li Wensong to prevent them from being taken hostage, and later extracts Peak Eternal Realm cultivation specifically because his earlier cultivation might not suffice to protect his family amid competing experts 525 670.

Although he becomes the central figure of an increasingly powerful organization, he prefers to delegate administration and remain a hands-off leader. Li Wensong's management of the sect and chamber of commerce allows him to achieve this goal 714.

• Lu Zixuan — Eldest daughter. Rejects the weapon offered by her mother's side and chooses him. He gives her his divine sword, converts her cultivation, and plans for her education and protection 3 7 18 44. He arranges sword instruction, strengthens her cultivation, and seeks opponents who can improve her practical combat experience 75 180 215. At his final homecoming, she embraces him and competes with Lu Miaomiao for his attention 822.
• Lu Miaomiao — Youngest daughter, who accompanies him to the Demon Domain. He gives her his defensive armor and supports her wish to reach the Great Emperor Realm 4 7 14. He discovers her food-assisted cultivation ability, gives her a Heaven-Devouring Devil Beast, and purchases a shape-shifting treasure for her 52 144 591. Her happiness remains a central motivation, and she sits on his lap during the final family gathering 144 822.
• Lu Zhengran — Son who chooses to remain with Xu Qingying. Lu Qing'an accepts his departure and tells him to take care of himself rather than attempting to force him to stay 3 4. He later tells Zhengran that he has nothing to apologize for and acknowledges his own excessive strictness 133. When Zhengran visits the Demon Domain, he works to rebuild their relationship and allows the siblings to resolve their tensions before encouraging them to get along 244 252 258 263. Their relationship is restored well before the ending, when he warmly welcomes Zhengran and praises his cultivation progress 822.
• Adopted daughter — By Lu Zhengran's visit to the academy, Lu Qing'an confirms that he has taken in an adopted daughter who is another older sister to Zhengran 255.
• Xiao Qingyi / Great Emperor Leixiao — Longtime friend and lord of Demon Descent City. Their friendship grew through bickering and fighting; he provides a home, cultivation techniques, and support after Lu Qing'an's return 10 11 13 19. They were once rivals, but Lu Qing'an rescued him from a deadly ambush when his supposed friends did not intervene, leading to their close friendship 75. Lu Qing'an does not blame him when his disciples become involved with Black Dragon's betrayal 340.
• He Hong — Close friend, artifact refiner, and the matchmaker who introduced him to Xu Qingying. Lu Qing'an welcomes him into the Demon Domain and arranges materials, a workshop, and instruction from Wang Duanshan 2 19 21 34. Later entrusts him and Wang Duanshan with improving time-cultivation equipment 427.
• Xue Tianfei — Persistent admirer who searched for him for a thousand years, even entering the Immortal Ruins and returning wounded. He initially declines her suggestion of becoming his daughters' stepmother, though her care for them begins to soften his feelings 13 16 17 18. Her affection began before his Emperor Realm breakthrough, when he recuperated in her family's home 147. Their relationship gradually becomes romantic, and he eventually marries her 218 309 730 757 761. She remains his wife through his journey to the Hongmeng Holy Realm and his final homecoming 766 788 822.
• Xu Yunyi — Former sister-in-law and his daughters' aunt. He refuses to hold her family's actions against her, supports her decision to settle with them, and converts her cultivation 24 40 41. She thanks him for helping Xu Xuanyu, although he denies involvement 75. Her cultivation later reaches the Great Emperor Realm with the Heavenly Regret Emperor Position 188.
• Xu Xuanyu — Former brother-in-law. Lu Qing'an recognizes his good nature despite his occasionally irritating behavior 2. He helps him obtain revenge, finds a possible treatment for his ruined cultivation, and supports his renewed cultivation and alchemy studies 75 144 210. Their closeness becomes sufficiently paternal that Xue Tianfei remarks Xu Xuanyu increasingly resembles his son 574.
• Sun Minzi — Young cultivator rescued through Lu Zixuan's intervention. He invites her to accompany the family and help his daughter understand the Demon Domain, suspecting she descends from someone he once knew 8 11. Later includes her in sword instruction and cultivation enhancement alongside Lu Zixuan 75 180.
• Wang Duanshan — Old friend and master artifact refiner who forged his divine equipment. Lu Qing'an commissions further treasures from him and asks him to teach He Hong 24 34 35. Continues supplying him with higher-grade materials and encourages his cultivation so that he can study increasingly powerful treasures 347 534 645.
• Luo Danhong — Array master whom he permits to teach Xu Yunyi. He warns her against harming Yunyi and insists that her instruction remain focused on arrays 32 40. Later asks her to transform the refined Saber Domain into a trial formation and help capture Zhu Qingtian's soul 274 422.
• Little Blackie / Black Dragon — Contracted Great Emperor Realm black dragon. Assigned to guard his hidden vault, but missing when he returns; Lu Qing'an had intended to use the dragon to protect his daughters 6 7 14. Black Dragon later admits that resentment of their contract led him to seek Lu Qing'an's death and recruit Xiao Qingyi's disciples using Divine Crystals 340. His confrontation with Lu Qing'an involves an external avatar, and he is subsequently again present among Lu Qing'an's contracted companions 344 445.
• Li Cangxuan / Demon Emperor Dugu — His disciple and successor to the Demon Emperor position. Claims to have surpassed him; Lu Qing'an is untroubled by the ambition 44 47 50 62 64. Their reunion reveals that Cangxuan's anger chiefly stems from feeling abandoned. Lu Qing'an apologizes, welcomes him home, and explicitly regards him as a son 62 63 64 250. He entrusts Cangxuan with teaching his daughter and promises to attend his wedding regardless of other obligations 75 251.
• Lin Qingxue — Xu Qingying's master. Her contempt and attempts to entice his children provoke his killing intent, but he spares her because the children regard her as an elder 2 3 4. • Madam Qin — Xue Tianfei's mother. Advocates marriage between her daughter and Lu Qing'an and offers the entire chamber of commerce as a dowry, while first making certain that Tianfei genuinely cares for his children 105 106.
• Dao of Alchemy Master — An expert whom Lu Qing'an seeks out to help restore Xu Xuanyu's cultivation. Later examines the captured Saber God and identifies the remaining herb needed for treatment 133 144 274.
