Cosmology and Structure
Scale and Terminology
- The Astral Realm is described as the largest known multiverse system, expanding continuously as worlds enter its reach 270 611.
- Its “stars” are individual universes or planes, not merely the stars contained inside those universes 450.
- Known Cosmic Sea specifically refers to discovered universes incorporated into the Astral Realm’s rules. These worlds are governed by its system, rather than merely observable from afar 450.
- Plane and universe describe the same category of world in magical and technological terminology respectively. Each plane has a crystalline wall and its own rules, which form part of the Astral Realm’s larger rule system 270.
- From outside, the realm resembles a supermassive celestial body composed of countless luminous spheres, each representing an independent major world 1288.
Three Great Dimensions
| Dimension | Position | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental and Energy Dimension | Bottom | The foundational energy layer. Purified origin energy settles here; its elemental life-forms possess consciousness, societies, and civilizations 450 1174. |
| Material Dimension | Middle | The main material world and the birthplace of most conventional life. Its planes provide the material foundation for civilization 450. |
| Fantasy Dimension / Spiritual Dimension | Top; also envelops the realm’s outermost layer | Constructed from living beings’ thoughts, wisdom, and emotions. It digests incoming chaos and world fragments, gathers information, and obstructs outside observation 450 801 1183. |
- Circulation: Energy rises and condenses into matter; matter supports life; intelligent life contributes to the Fantasy Dimension; that dimension converts incoming substances into pure origin energy 450 1174.
- Balance: A supreme rule bridges the three dimensions and maintains their stability 450.
- Fantasy Origin: After the domain ruled by the Truth Wizard Civilization fell, its Fantasy Origin entered the Infinity Dimension, transforming that dimension’s importance and development 801.
Territorial Hierarchy
| Scale, largest to smallest | Description |
|---|---|
| Boundless space-time | Also described as the endless infinite multiversal sea or River of Space-Time; the broadest level in the territorial scheme 450. |
| Known Cosmic Sea | The Astral Realm itself 450. |
| Cosmic domain | Contains smaller territorial divisions 450. |
| Cosmic cluster | An intermediate division below a cosmic domain 450. |
| Cosmic system | A division below a cosmic cluster 450. |
| Plane / void celestial body | The lowest of the six principal territorial levels 450. |
- Planes include ordinary and great planes, with the Abyss, World Tree Universe, and Divine Realm recognized as the three superplanes 450.
- Void celestial bodies can resemble mountains, trees, rivers, or continents. They are distinct from planets and stars inside a universe; universes themselves are their most common form 450.
Regions of Rule Influence
These zones are distinguished by the strength of the Astral Realm’s rules, rather than by the territorial hierarchy above 611.
| Region | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Core Zone | Innermost region in the rule-influence scheme 611. |
| Inner Zone | Lies between the Core and Outer Zones 611. |
| Outer Zone | Contains fully integrated worlds, including the Elven Plane 611. |
| Assimilation Zone | Worlds are brought into the realm’s rule system. It is a principal destination for pioneering expeditions because Astral Realm powers and technologies can function at full strength there 611. |
| Expansion Zone | Receives newly drawn-in worlds. Incompletely established rules can suppress visitors’ powers and technologies, sometimes by more than ninety percent 611. |
| Chaos Zone | Barely affected by the Astral Realm’s rules; supplies worlds, matter, energy, and unusual life during Chaos Tides 611. |
| Black Abyss | Entirely beyond the influence of the Astral Realm’s rules 611. |
Fundamental Rules and Natural Processes
Astral Realm Will
- The Astral Realm Will is the domain’s “soul”: an accumulated consciousness of heaven and earth. It is described as instinctive rather than independently reasoning and naturally resists complete external control 1288.
- Native beings carry the realm’s origin mark in their life imprint. Logo exploits this connection to disguise his miniature realm as part of the Astral Realm’s own structure 1290.
- Its acknowledgment is central to true mastery of the domain. After the final battle, it bows to the Lord of Truth and recognizes him as its master 1315.
Order, Chaos, and the Abyss
- Order and chaos are the realm’s two origin forces; neither is inherently superior. Order creates stable conditions in which civilizations can develop and eventually contribute to the realm 545.
- The Abyss is the sole source of chaos and the gathering place of negative energy. It stretches between all three dimensions and can connect to any plane 545.
- Abyssal demons are exceptions to the usual consequences of destroying worlds: their destruction fulfills an inborn function and does not incur the Astral Realm Will’s loathing 545.
- Matter and souls are fundamental rules of existence. Native beings below Third-Step Eternity remain dependent on these rules, including Eternals 1305.
Expansion and Chaos Tides
- During a Chaos Tide, the Astral Realm draws planes, matter, energy, and peculiar life-forms from the Chaos Zone toward the Expansion Zone—its equivalent of feeding 611.
- The Fantasy Dimension acts as the realm’s digestive organ, breaking down incoming worlds and fragments into usable origin energy 1183.
- Expansion-zone resources include lesser world origin force, obtained from worlds outside the Astral Realm. Though weaker than genuine world origin force, it can improve bodies, souls, and bloodline fusion through suitable techniques or devices 616.
Guardians and Hazards
| Being or phenomenon | Role |
|---|---|
| Earth Guardians | Protect the three dimensions, with particular emphasis on the Material Dimension 1180. |
| Void Whales | Purification beings born from impurities and law fragments expelled during a plane’s formation. They consume chaotic energy, damaged space-time, toxins of law, and accumulated resentment; killing them brings punishment from the realm 1182. |
| Astral Realm Anomalies | Abnormal existences that largely ignore ordinary rules and possess at least Upper God strength. Every recorded successful killing required a Main God’s intervention and a heavy price 579 613. |
| Astral Realm Troll | A destroyer of civilizations that consumes their providence and accumulated wisdom, while housing evil gods within its body 1117. |
Civilizations and Political Order
Civilization Grades
Civilization rank depends on territory and broader development. God-level military power—whether technological or embodied in an individual—is the basic threshold for recognized standing 450.
| Grade | Documented standing or reach |
|---|---|
| Plane-level | Includes the Elven Plane’s kingdoms and empires. Without god-level protection, such societies possess no effective standing in the wider realm 450. |
| Low Astral Realm-level | The minimum grade with recognized status and eligibility for conventional civilizations to join the Civilization Council; commonly active within cosmic systems 450 459. |
| Middle Astral Realm-level | Competes across universe-community-scale territories 459. |
| High Astral Realm-level | Can dominate regions within a cosmic domain 459. |
| Peak Astral Realm-level | Influence extends beyond a single cosmic domain. Such civilizations can create planes, manipulate causality, reverse time, and field Supreme God-level power 459 1224. |
| Super civilization | Occupies the highest tier and helps establish the realm’s political order. The Northern Spirit Empire can confront an Eternal through technology even without its transcendent individuals 710 878. |
Institutions and Legal Protection
- The Holy Alliance, Civilization Council, and Hell Alliance emerged around the transition from the Second to the Third Era. Their balance produced a largely peaceful political order 450.
- Their framework included the Astral Realm Council, encompassing ninety-five percent of the realm’s powerful forces, a unified Star Wheel currency, and formal territorial divisions 450.
- Non-civilization organizations can obtain comparable standing through registration. Examples include the Spellcaster Association, Star Sea Bank, and Void Colosseum 450.
- Members of recognized civilizations theoretically receive protection under the Astral Realm Civilization Council Joint Agreement and Astral Realm Council Peace Declaration. Serious violations can provoke pursuit by advanced civilizations’ armies 450.
- Communities without god-level backing lack comparable protection. Temporary identification from the Spellcaster Association nevertheless provides a legal identity and access to specified civic rights 450 452.
- Political backing affects enforcement: even powerful organizations weigh an offender’s affiliations before responding to provocations 589.
Cultivation and Technology
| Major cultivation system | Focus | Strengths and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Matter / Extreme Path System | Divine body; “embracing all things in one body” | Stable physical combat strength and resistance to outside interference, but relatively limited methods and potentially exploitable bodily weaknesses 583 584. |
| Law / Domain System | Divine Realm; “one law giving rise to ten thousand laws” | Uses mastered Divine Laws to leverage other rules; can temporarily alter rules within its Divine Realm 583. |
| World System | Divine Kingdom | Broad, creator-like control inside the Divine Kingdom, offset by severely restricted movement of the true body 584. |
- Ability users evaluate powers through potential and development level. Progress beyond an ability’s normal ceiling is possible through exceptionally difficult limit-breaking 19.
- Civilization-wide power is not reducible to individual cultivation. Some peak civilizations can oppose Eternal-level forces through the Power of Civilization 878 1224.
- The realm has nine true Eternals at one documented stage, rising to ten after the Goddess of Fate’s breakthrough. This excludes beings whose Eternal-level combat power depends on remaining inside the Astral Realm 1074 1088.
Travel and Communication
- Plane exit: Leaving a plane requires advanced internal-external space interaction technology to penetrate its internal spatial layers and reach its crystalline wall 451.
- Virtual Universes: Legal identity permits access to the Weave, Mount Celestia, and Northern Spirit Spacetime 452.
- Higher-Dimensional Information Space: The Aslant Civilization uses the Fantasy Dimension as an information hub capable of transmitting across vast territories 452.
- External reconnaissance: The Fantasy Dimension forms an information barrier against outside observation. Its guardian, the Lord of No Void, can trace exchanges of information back toward other domains 801.
- Exploration: Fantasy Hall serves as a gathering, trading, and conflict site for Explorers operating in Fantasy Planes 801.
- Postwar coordination: The Heavenly Net connects governed planes and stars for instantaneous information sharing, force deployment, and joint command 1317.
History
Primordial Age and the First Astral Realm War
Primordial Gods were born while the Astral Realm was still chaos. During the First Era, they opened the newly emerged world amid incomplete rules and undeveloped order. As life multiplied, widespread warfare killed many of these ancient beings, while some survivors withdrew into seclusion 342.
The Goddess of the Earth discovered the Power of Faith, enabling the emergence of acquired Gods of Faith. Conflict between the Old Gods and New Gods culminated in the First Astral Realm War; the New Gods’ victory began the Second Era 342.
Establishment and Breakdown of Third-Era Order
The three great political alliances established a relatively peaceful order at the transition into the Third Era. That arrangement favored established super civilizations, while restricting the development of ambitious peak civilizations and other challengers 450 710.
The Sun God’s attack on Primordial Heaven killed two Supreme Ancient Gods and gravely injured three. Logo, Lancelot, and Gustavo expected the clash to ignite disputes accumulated throughout the Third Era 710. Later, Dao Devourer attacks threatened cultivation paths and destabilized civilizations, creating opportunities for their rivals 851 920.
The Adrian Federation exploited the wider stalemate to invade the Elemental Dimension. Its campaign angered the Astral Realm Will and drew responses from Earth Guardians, the Astral Spirit Kingdom, and Void Whales 1169 1180 1181 1182.
Relations with Other Domains
The Astral Realm maintained contact with other powerful domains, while weaker domains could face direct absorption. Its scale and military strength helped deter outside predation 1092.
The Spirit Saint Domain became a particular object of interest because of its ability to purify faith. The Eternals discussed intervention after learning of its Heavenly Emperor’s rapid rise, but competing commitments and internal disagreements prevented an immediate joint invasion 1088.
The Mother of the Stars’ Attempted Unification
The Mother of the Stars sought to refine the entire Astral Realm into an Inner Universe, incorporating its matter, energy, laws, lives, and dreams into herself to approach Third-Step Eternity. She justified the sacrifice as necessary to protect her home from the Destruction Tide 1248 1249.
After absorbing the Astral Realm Will’s origin, she began rewriting laws, contracting boundaries, and refining planes. Independent Eternals opposed her because complete control would force them into submission 1249 1290. Later passages show the Will still resisting her attempt to secure final mastery 1288 1290.
Final Battle and Restoration
Logo returned in a concealed miniature Astral Realm and waited near the Golden Universe Cluster. At a critical moment, he tore away one-third of the realm’s territory, directly challenging the Mother of the Stars’ control 1289 1290 1292.
The ensuing battle damaged the realm on a fundamental level. The Mother of the Stars severed the rule supporting the existence of souls, threatening native intelligent beings regardless of cultivation below Third-Step Eternity 1305. The aftermath left collapsed planes, ruined civilizations, and shattered laws throughout the void 1315.
As the Lord of Truth, Logo subdued the remaining opposition and sent the Goddess of Fate into the Heaven-Bearing Reincarnation Disc beside the Mother of the Stars. He then restored the realm and its lost lives, received the Astral Realm Will’s acknowledgment, and declared his rule 1315.
Reconstruction and the Age of Great Conquest
The restored realm adopted the Heavenly Net and a complete Six Paths of Reincarnation. Over the following hundred thousand years, the emergence of more than a dozen Eternals further reinforced its foundation 1317 1319.
The Astral Realm Allied Forces subsequently attacked the Eternity Domain. Their Eternals benefited from the Nine Heavens of Eternity theory, which gave them a more precise understanding of cultivation and more efficient control of power than similarly ranked opponents 1320 1321.
Using the Eternity Domain as a springboard, the allied forces launched the Age of Great Conquest across the Chaos Sea. Domains including Brahma Sound, Rune, Light and Darkness, Machinery, and Myriad Phenomena were incorporated into the Astral Realm’s expanding civilization network 1323.
