Background / History
Previous Life and Transmigration
In his previous life, William lived in China. Orphaned during childhood, he completed university with help from charitable supporters. After winning the lottery, he was abducted by a man wearing Joker-like makeup, robbed, and killed 1.
He awakened in 1990 as eleven-year-old William Stark in the United Kingdom, retaining both his previous memories and those of his new body. His new family was comfortably situated: his father worked as a dentist, his mother was a University of Cambridge professor, and his sister Anne was nine. Having previously grown up without parents, he welcomed the chance to live with a family 1.
Introduction to Magic
An owl delivered his Hogwarts acceptance letter while his rescued cat, Bobocha, attempted to attack it. William recognized the school’s crest and realized that the strange abilities remembered by his new body were magic 1.
Roy and Lyanna initially dismissed Hogwarts as fraudulent, preferring conventional education for their son. William asked the visiting Hagrid to demonstrate magic as a practical way to overcome their doubts 2 3.
Despite recognizing several famous names, William remembered virtually nothing of the Harry Potter plot. He therefore could not rely on detailed foreknowledge to prepare for the dangers of his new world 2.
Appearance
- Hair: Thick, glossy dark brown hair 1.
- Eyes: Dark green 1 3.
- Age and build: An eleven-year-old child when he enters the wizarding world 1.
- Reputation: Described as Ravenclaw’s newly crowned heartthrob; several girls confess to him after the school year begins 23 39.
Personality
William combines an intense appetite for learning with sustained discipline. He buys far more books than Hogwarts requires and treats the summer before school as an opportunity for concentrated magical study. His previous university education gives him greater patience and a clearer sense of purpose than most children his apparent age 9 12.
He is also mischievous and commercially minded. He imagines renovating the Leaky Cauldron into a full-service entertainment venue and proposes selling imported Lao Gan Ma and Mayinglong at Hogwarts. His willingness to join pranks is tempered by caution: during the train raid, he rejects a plan that would expose his face and make him the obvious suspect 4 9 15.
In emergencies, William remains unusually composed. He treats Snape despite disliking him, protects classmates during the Grindylow incident, and takes command when panic prevents others from acting. He also gives Tywin credit for teaching the spells that helped resolve the crisis 26 27 31.
Abilities & Skills
Charms
Charms are William’s strongest subject. He can perform many first- and second-year spells on his first attempt, often with greater power than other students his age 33.
- Wingardium Leviosa: His first successful spell; later used to levitate the wooden box containing Fluffy 10 49.
- Lumos: Illuminates nearly fifty metres of the dark path to Hogwarts. He also manipulates reflected red light during the Niffler prank 16 17.
- Alohomora: Opens a Hogwarts Express compartment without requiring him to knock or reveal himself 15.
- Shrinking Charm: Reduces his packed luggage enough to carry it in his pocket 13.
- Bluebell-like flame: Produces blue fire that forces Devil’s Snare to retreat and release Summerby 43.
- Waddiwasi: Redirects a Quaffle into McLaggen’s thigh during the Quidditch-ground disturbance 38.
- Wand technique: Executes the basic wand movements perfectly in Flitwick’s class, earning Ravenclaw a point 32.
Defensive and Combat Magic
William readily learns Tywin’s defensive spells and adapts them to circumstances beyond their classroom demonstrations 31 33.
- Extraction Charm — “Hasek”: Removes the top of a Grindylow’s skull, killing it outright. The result demonstrates a substantial power difference between William and his classmates using the same spell 31.
- “Ah~ Puncture”: Breaks tank fragments into slender spikes, which he gathers and directs toward the remaining Grindylows 31.
- Battlefield leadership: Restores order, places the students behind him, and assigns them to fight in pairs 31.
- Threat assessment: Stops Cho from rushing into danger during both the Grindylow incident and Summerby’s entanglement in Devil’s Snare 31 43.
Potions
William shows natural aptitude for Potions as well as Charms 33.
- Successfully brews and cools a Cure for Boils potion 26.
- Uses the completed potion to remove boils from Snape; Cho and Bell Lyme help administer it to the injured pair 26.
- Tells the other students to stop brewing while Snape and Marietta are examined, preventing the unsupervised lesson from continuing 26.
Transfiguration
Transfiguration is a relative weakness rather than an area of exceptional talent. William remains interested in it and works diligently despite progressing more slowly than Cedric 33 35.
- Needs more than half a month to turn a match into an imperfect needle; Cedric accomplished the same task perfectly in two days 33.
- Nevertheless performs a transformation in his first lesson that McGonagall had expected most students to attempt successfully only weeks later 34.
- Receives McGonagall’s praise for his diligence and an invitation to ask her questions 35.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Cherrywood wand: His primary spellcasting tool; wielded in his right hand during the Grindylow encounter 7 31.
- Wand-care tools: Purchased with his wand for a combined thirteen Galleons. Cedric subsequently offers to maintain the wand himself 8.
- Personal book collection: Includes first-year textbooks, numerous supplementary works, and The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 2. His purchase of more than one hundred Galleons’ worth of books earns him intermediate membership at Flourish and Blotts 9 13.
- Diary: Contains the winning lottery number from his former life, which he hopes might eventually make him wealthy again 1.
Relationships
- Roy Stark — Father and dentist. Initially distrusts Hogwarts, then accompanies William and Hagrid to Diagon Alley 1 2 4.
- Lyanna — Mother and Cambridge professor. Favors Cambridge over Roy’s proposed Oxford education and initially rejects the existence of magic 1 2.
- Anne — Younger sister. William promises to write weekly; her correspondence with Dumbledore also gives him a way to submit magical questions before school 12 13.
- Bobocha — Rescued orange cat and close companion. William brings Bobocha to Hogwarts as his permitted pet 1 12.
- Drogon — Family tawny owl, named by Anne and kept at home for correspondence. Dumbledore enchants the owl’s ring to conceal and protect letters 12 39.
- Cedric Diggory — Close friend and early magical tutor. They meet at Ollivander’s, correspond over the summer, and share an interest in possible business ventures 6 8 9 12.
- Cho Chang — Fellow Muggle-born Ravenclaw and friend. William protects her during dangerous incidents and respects her willingness to help Marietta when others retreat 13 20 31 43.
- Fred and George Weasley — Friends and prank partners. They celebrate his supposed victories over Snape and show him the enchanted map taken from Filch 15 16 27.
- Hagrid — Guide to the wizarding world and trusted friend. William later helps arrange a temporary hiding place for Fluffy 3 4 48 49.
- Albus Dumbledore — Answers William’s summer study questions, rewards his response to the Potions accident, and cautions him about publishing Hogwarts’ secret passages 12 26.
- Minerva McGonagall — Transfiguration teacher. Praises his work ethic and offers academic help, while discouraging his questions about conflict between professors 34 35.
- Severus Snape — Potions teacher. The Sorting Hat publicly exposes William’s private insult about him; William nevertheless treats him after the cauldron accident 20 26.
- Professor Tywin — Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Praises William’s talent after William takes control of the Grindylow crisis 31.
- Cormac McLaggen — Antagonistic schoolmate who resents William’s achievements. William later knocks him down with a redirected Quaffle 18 34 38.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express
- First magical intervention: During the confrontation between the Weasleys and Malfoys, William tries to stop Draco from using a glass bottle as a weapon. His first Levitation Charm instead sends Draco’s ice cream into his face 10 11.
- Train prank: Helps the twins raid a Slytherin compartment with smoke and a Niffler. He unlocks the door, directs light toward Cho’s mirror, and helps recover coins from the creature 15 16.
- Sorting: The Sorting Hat retaliates against him by announcing that he thinks Snape resembles a “greasy old bat.” It then places him in Ravenclaw, while Gryffindor students acclaim him as a hero 20.
Classroom Rescues and the “Professor Killer” Reputation
- Potions accident: Helps treat Snape and Marietta, earning Ravenclaw fifty points from Dumbledore. Rumors subsequently recast him as the student who made Snape “explode” 26 27.
- Grindylow outbreak: Protects the trapped Ravenclaws and helps the class regain control after Tywin is incapacitated 31.
- Public reputation: Two professors’ hospitalizations in two days produce the nickname “professor killer,” despite William having dealt with emergencies caused by others. By this point, he has earned Ravenclaw 120 points, including 100 associated with the two accidents 32.
Mapping Hogwarts and Investigating Suspicious Events
- Castle map: Proposes making a Hogwarts map after struggling with the castle’s layout. Dumbledore warns him about exposing secret passages, while the twins reveal their confiscated enchanted parchment 23 26 27.
- Professors’ conflict: Questions McGonagall and Hagrid about the hostility between Snape and Tywin, but receives few direct answers 35 37.
- Ministry break-in: Notices suspicious circumstances surrounding the delayed reporting of an August 1 attack. He theorizes that the Ministry intends to pressure Lucius Malfoy for money while concealing its knowledge of the real culprit; this remains his interpretation rather than an established finding 37 38 40 41.
- Flying-class emergency: Uses blue fire to free Summerby from Devil’s Snare after warning Cho against approaching on a broom 43.
Hiding Fluffy
- Temporary refuge: Helps persuade Hagrid that the Room of Requirement can conceal Fluffy until Charlie takes the dog to Romania the following summer 48 49.
- Night-time transport: Joins Charlie, Cedric, and Cho under Charlie’s Disillusionment Charm. After Cho sings Fluffy to sleep and Hagrid packs him into a box, William levitates the container toward the castle 49.
- Room of Requirement: Opens the newly appeared door and enters a vast chamber filled with objects hidden by generations of Hogwarts students 50.
