Background / History
Childhood and introduction to magic
Anne grew up in the Stark family, two years younger than William. Before discovering the wizarding world, she sent five letters of commission to Baker Street every week and proudly claimed to have received a reply. After meeting Hagrid, she redirected her enthusiasm toward Hogwarts, declaring that she would write Dumbledore seven times a week to request admission 2 3 277.
Her interest in William’s magical belongings frequently caused trouble at home. She secretly had a duplicate key made for his room, and one incident involving an exploding balloon produced enough smoke to bring out the fire brigade. Her early encounters with Hermione were similarly contentious: she exposed Hermione to William’s unfinished dark-circle glasses and stained her Encyclopædia Britannica with blotting ink, eventually having to apologize 100 101 102.
Anne also contributed financially to Akali’s Mystery Shop. William invested both his savings and hers in the business, and she later reminded him that he owed her money from that investment 101 237.
Hogwarts education
Anne received her Hogwarts acceptance letter while hiding inside the Lovegood family’s chimney during a game with Luna and Ginny. Before term, William checked her homework while Hermione supplied explanations and set challenging questions. Anne hoped to join William in Ravenclaw, but subsequently became a Gryffindor 222 225 258.
Despite her uneven preparation, Anne became a strong student under William’s instruction and through daily study with Hermione. She finished first in her year during her first year and maintained that position for several consecutive years. By her fourth year, Hermione was already pressing her to prepare for her O.W.L.s and warning her about slipping grades 369 810.
Werewolf Island
During a holiday in France, Anne took in a seemingly abandoned black dog and named him Dahei. She and Gabrielle later disappeared while playing near their hotel; William concluded that a powerful adult wizard must have abducted them, since Anne already knew numerous spells and carried defensive prank products 345 355.
Held in a werewolf cave, Anne comforted Gabrielle and used her overlooked storage pendant to set a trap for their guard, Rickon. The girls blinded and overpowered him, recovered Anne’s Safety Watch and wand, and escaped on her Nimbus 2001. Anne promised the other captive children that they would return for them 357.
Anne piloted through hostile spells and rammed a pursuing werewolf with the broom before escaping through Starlight Pool. A storm then threw the girls into a tree and broke the Nimbus. Continuing on foot, Anne used a Levitation Charm to lower Gabrielle safely from a high branch 357 359.
The girls subsequently encountered Thunderbird eggs and their protective mother. Anne’s wand warned her of the approaching danger, helping her evade repeated lightning strikes. A later account confirms that Anne and Gabrielle each took an egg from the island 360 1035.
Silver Wing
Anne’s egg hatched into a Thunderbird chick, which she named Silver Wing. She concealed him in a secret base shared with Ginny and Luna until William discovered them. The chick was affectionate toward Anne but threatened William with electrical discharges 458 1035.
William and Hermione decided that Anne could not yet raise a Thunderbird and proposed returning the chick to an adult Thunderbird’s care. Three years after Silver Wing went to the United States, Anne asked William to find him during his visit there 459 1035.
Work with Hermione and the Black household
After the Yule Ball, Anne became Hermione’s assistant as both a learning opportunity and a punishment. Her duties included preparing potion ingredients, collecting fan letters, feeding cats, and helping improve house-elves’ living conditions. She earned spending money through this work, but William refused her request to recruit an assistant of her own 660 662.
At Grimmauld Place, William asked Anne to spend time with Kreacher because he might know the whereabouts of a locket. Hermione urged her to treat him kindly rather than repeat Sirius’s hostile approach 735.
Anne’s relationship with Kreacher developed through contests over poisoned food and, eventually, genuine companionship. When she offered him Fizzing Whizbees as a gift between friends rather than an order, he accepted. After she suggested exchanging secrets, Kreacher produced a locket and asked her to destroy it; Anne responded by taking out a locket of her own 782.
She also attempted to reform Sirius’s mother’s abusive portrait. Using William’s enchanted painting supplies, Anne and Luna added frightening creatures to its frame whenever it cursed, demanding that it welcome visitors politely instead 782.
Ministry crisis and impersonation
The “Anne” who organizes the Ministry expedition is actually William in disguise. The apparent Anne challenges Harry’s assumptions, arranges reinforcements, distributes protective items, and enters the Department of Mysteries. The following chapter reveals that the real Anne has taken Polyjuice Potion to resemble Hermione and is attending the trial at Merlin Memorial Hall alongside Hermione, who is disguised as William 898 899 900.
The expedition leader’s Patronus, planning, and pursuit of the power needed to repair Ravenclaw’s Diadem therefore should not be attributed to Anne 898 899 900.
Later school and family life
Anne entered Gryffindor’s Quidditch tryouts with a Firebolt and subsequently played against William’s Ravenclaw team. She helped establish Gryffindor’s early lead with two goals and an assist, although Ravenclaw ultimately won when Cho caught the Snitch 813 830.
Her private combat lessons continued as war approached. William and Hermione taught her Apparition and other survival techniques, treating early preparation as more important than licensing restrictions 853.
Her mischief continued alongside those responsibilities. William caught Anne, Luna, Ygritte, and Fire Kiss stealing his koi and suspended them upside down with Levicorpus. In a later domestic scene, Anne prepared a successful dinner, then tried to make William choose between her cooking and Hermione’s 1010 1063.
Appearance
Anne resembles William, particularly in her dark green eyes. Cho calls her pretty after seeing her photograph 39 357.
- Eyes: Dark green, explicitly described as identical to William’s 101 357.
- Childhood hairstyle: Two topknots at age ten; she later wears her hair in a ponytail 100 590.
- Childhood clothing: Introduced at age ten wearing a floral dress extending below her knees and carrying a fake wand 100.
- Build: Noticeably shorter than William during her early Hogwarts years 277.
Personality
Anne is mischievous, competitive, and quick to turn an opportunity to her advantage. She sneaks into William’s room, negotiates over presents and mirror-rental payments, and tries to exploit his affection for her. William considers her an unreliable choice for a Quidditch spy because she would enjoy playing both sides and defeating Ravenclaw herself 101 237 258.
She dislikes being excluded from William and Hermione’s activities. She searches the school when they disappear for evening training, complains when their travels leave her behind, and frequently interrupts their private moments. Nevertheless, she recognizes Hermione’s feelings early and actively encourages William to invite her to the Yule Ball 277 535 597 643.
Her rivalry with Hermione conceals considerable loyalty. Anne attacks Malfoy for insulting her and becomes tearful when she fears Hermione has been attacked. With Gabrielle, she remains reassuring and resourceful during captivity; with Kreacher, she offers friendship that he has not experienced since Regulus’s death 258 284 357 782.
Anne is academically capable without sharing Hermione’s constant enthusiasm for revision. She complains about early study sessions and unfinished holiday work, yet repeatedly places first in her year and progresses to studying advanced magic 369 469 810 945.
