Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resurrected diary Horcrux | 305 307 312 | Escapes the diary through a sacrifice involving his own soul. His incomplete resurrection leaves him possessing Lockhart. Dumbledore identifies a mutual Horcrux relationship between Tom and Voldemort. |
| Restored independent body in America | 541 559 | Regains a body before returning to Britain for the Quidditch World Cup. His magic remains fixed at his sixteen-year-old level; William kills him, leaving him in shadow form again. |
| Sixteen-year-old body restored | 724 | Wormtail first gives him a rudimentary body using snake venom and Unicorn Blood, then restores his adolescent body through the bone, flesh, and blood ritual. Tom deliberately avoids using Harry’s blood for this resurrection. |
| Separation from the Horcrux collective | 1048 1049 | Uses magic stored in Slytherin’s Wand to sever every remaining connection between his soul and the other Horcruxes. He could not cast the spell with his own limited magic. The separation makes him killable. |
| Return after William’s killing blow | 1052 | An old wizard restores him after William confirms his death. Snakewood leaves and unidentified powerful potions treat his chest wound. |
| Prehistoric Mysteries practitioner | 1090 | Masters forms of magic that function without the restrictions imposed on ordinary wizardry in the Underworld. This expands his capabilities without immediately increasing his underlying magical reserves. |
| Repeated revival through the Ark of the Covenant | 1092 | Places his heart inside the Ark and tests its protection by killing himself. Thereafter, his corpse disappears and he revives nearby with an intact body, even after decapitation. |
| Complete soul restored | 1113 | Reunites eight soul pieces after 4,396 deaths during the restoration process. Gains Voldemort’s seventy years of memories and ceases to be merely a sixteen-year-old soul fragment, though the knowledge does not instantly grant him Voldemort’s strength. |
Background / History
Tom originates from the first fragment of Voldemort’s soul, preserved in his diary. During the summer when the original Riddle was sixteen, he murdered his father, obtained Slytherin’s Ring, framed his uncle, and made the diary his first Horcrux. The diary fragment knew about the ring because Riddle had already selected it as a future vessel, but knew nothing definite about the later Horcruxes 618.
Dumbledore believes the diary fragment’s comparatively large share of the original soul and unusual autonomy made its resurrection possible. That autonomy had served Voldemort’s intention of having someone reopen the Chamber of Secrets. Once resurrected, however, Tom pursued an existence of his own rather than remaining his creator’s instrument 312.
Tom regards Voldemort’s later life as a failure. Where Voldemort split his soul to preserve himself, Tom seeks to gather the fragments, become complete, and replace his original self 438.
Appearance
Tom normally has the handsome appearance of his sixteen-year-old self; restoring his body does not initially age him beyond that point 294 724.
- Possession form: His young face appears on the back of a host’s head. During full possession, it moves forward and replaces the host’s features 307 629.
- Disguise: Uses Polyjuice Potion to appear as a middle-aged wizard at the Quidditch World Cup 541.
- Constantinople clothing: Wears a loose white robe and Muslim skullcap while carrying a battered Quran 1059.
- Vatican clothing: Later wears a skullcap, purple Catholic robe, and close-fitting white vestment 1113.
Personality
Tom’s chief advantages are intelligence, charm, and an understanding of other people’s desires. Dumbledore remembers the young Riddle as a talented student who studied his professors’ interests and cultivated useful connections. Both Dumbledore and William consider this calculating younger self more dangerous as a manipulator than the later Voldemort 294 1038.
He treats followers as expendable. A possessed host’s approaching death matters little if it helps him recover a Horcrux, and he watches Scourers die without concern while concentrating on his own objective 629 1048. His speeches about wizard freedom likewise encourage domination, theft, and violence against Muggles rather than equality 992.
His ambition makes cooperation possible but never reliable. He helps undermine Voldemort and sabotages a Scourer operation when either serves his advancement 724 934. William’s deception also teaches him to feign belief when an apparent benefactor offers something useful. After recovering his original self’s memories, he becomes markedly more restrained and composed, without abandoning his desire to kill his rivals 1053 1113 1114.
Abilities & Skills
Horcrux Knowledge and Survival
Tom understands Horcruxes from the unusual position of having been one himself 1049.
- Mutual protection: Before severing their connection, Tom and Voldemort form a symbiotic Horcrux relationship 312.
- Growth limitation: His fragmented soul initially fixes his magical development at sixteen. Many adult wizards can defeat him despite his ability to survive bodily death 312.
- Incomplete knowledge: His memories stop before Voldemort’s later Horcruxes were made, forcing him to infer their identities and hiding places 618.
- Soul restoration: Eventually reunites the scattered pieces through repentance understood as a form of emotional power, enduring the lethal pain through repeated revival 1113.
Possession
Tom can attach himself to another person and eventually take full control of the body 307 629.
- Attachment gradually drains the host’s life force; full possession accelerates the process 629.
- Full control lets him act through the host and use his own power 629.
- Possession does not eliminate physical vulnerability. The cave potion leaves his host so weak that Tom loses control, allowing the host to crawl into the Inferi-filled lake 629.
Manipulation and Political Organization
Tom builds influence through tailored promises, public grievances, and carefully staged confrontations 934 992.
- Turns arrest into an opportunity to present himself as a persecuted leader 934.
- Incites underpaid prison guards to rebel by promising access to Muggle wealth and property 992.
- Uses his prison escape to strengthen his reputation and secure promotion to the Scourers’ innermost leadership 1036.
- Designs layered operations with replacement plans, including Peter’s identity switches and the diversion of Ilvermorny’s defenders 485 1044.
Parseltongue and Serpent Control
Tom speaks Parseltongue and uses it to access Slytherin’s legacy 997 1049.
- Awakens the serpent associated with the Snakewood, allowing the tree to flower 997.
- Works with a Horned Serpent during the prison uprising; it brings him a wand and helps kill the warden 992.
- Activates Slytherin’s Wand through a hissing incantation when severing the Horcrux connections 1049.
Spellcasting and Mental Magic
Tom remains a capable duelist even when his magical reserves are limited 541.
- Creates a silver defensive barrier and conjures a venomous snake from the floor 541.
- Places the professor leading Uagadou’s delegation under the Imperius Curse to create disorder at Ilvermorny 1044.
- Uses Legilimency, although it reveals nothing when he attempts to examine the old wizard claiming to be Slytherin 1053.
- Subdues the protective enchantment on Wormtail’s silver arm when it tries to strangle him 1100.
Prehistoric Mysteries
These ancient forms of magic allow Tom to operate effectively in the Underworld, where ordinary spells consume excessive magical power 1090.
- Draws on hatred for William to construct multiple magical shields 1092.
- Seals the Ark of the Covenant after placing his heart inside 1092.
- Continues studying religious texts for concealed magical knowledge after returning from the Underworld 1113.
- Limits: His early mastery is insufficient against Vivian, who repeatedly kills him. The magic taught through the old man’s scheme also conceals markings that can control his body and soul 1092 1114.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Diary — His original Horcrux vessel, from which he escapes during the Chamber of Secrets incident 304 312.
- Slytherin’s notes — Provide information about the Prehistoric Mysteries and the spell for severing Horcrux connections. Tom destroys them to prevent anyone else from reading them 724 1049 1052.
- Slytherin’s Ring and Resurrection Stone — Takes the real ring and leaves a cursed Opal Necklace in its place. William later removes the ring from his body 437 1049.
- Slytherin’s Wand — Contains the stored magic needed to sever the Horcrux collective. William takes it after killing Tom outside the valley 1049.
- Ark of the Covenant — A Deathly Hallow that preserves his extracted heart and enables repeated revival. He hides it in the River Styx, but Gaunt eventually retrieves and opens it 1092 1114.
- Soul-Gathering Coffin — Obtained through Harry’s request to Death for a means of gathering killed souls. Tom uses it to collect the fragments required to restore himself 1091 1113.
- Clay figurine of Elaine — Obtained from Death as part of his agreement with the old man. Tom later threatens it while demanding further help 1091 1114.
Relationships
- Voldemort — His original self and eventual rival. Tom wants William and Dumbledore to kill Voldemort, clearing the way for his own independent future 438 724 1073.
- William Stark — His principal personal enemy. William ruins his Chamber of Secrets scheme, kills him repeatedly, and infiltrates his plans through the Targaryen identity 486 541 1049.
- Peter Pettigrew / Wormtail — Servant and spy inside Voldemort’s circle. Peter restores Tom’s body and supplies intelligence; Tom promises him safety and immortality to retain his cooperation 724 1100.
- Harry Potter — Intended sacrifice, captive, and unwilling companion in the search for Death. The soul fragment attached to Harry makes him useful for satisfying the journey’s requirements 304 1053 1073.
- Albus Dumbledore — Enemy and occasional beneficiary of Tom’s self-serving assistance against Voldemort. Dumbledore correctly identifies Tom’s desire for a complete soul as the source of their temporary shared interest 312 724.
- Professor Babbling / “Targaryen” — Babbling helps establish the false identity used to infiltrate his organization. Tom mistakes Targaryen for a valuable recruit while Babbling and William exploit his trust 398 997.
- Gaunt, posing as Salazar Slytherin — Rescuer and teacher whose offers draw Tom deeper into a prepared trap. Gaunt ultimately reveals that Tom’s restored body was intended as a vessel for Death 1052 1053 1114.
- Vivian — Overwhelms his defenses and repeatedly kills him shortly after he obtains the Ark’s revival protection, forcing him to flee 1092.

- Plans to use Ilvermorny’s students as the foundation for infiltrating the Magical Congress and eventually fighting William in a third wizarding war 1048.
- Successfully severs the Horcrux connections, only for William to stab him, finish him with a spell, and reveal the deception behind Targaryen 1049.
- Returns through the old wizard’s intervention and accepts instruction despite doubting his claim to be Slytherin 1052 1053.
The Search for Death
- Spends more than two months in Constantinople studying religious texts and walking the city as an imam. The routine initially produces no sensed magical breakthrough but noticeably calms his temperament 1059.
- Takes Harry into the Underworld. By breaking Harry into despair and then rekindling his desire for revenge, Tom completes Death’s trial and reaches the River Styx 1073 1090.
- Obtains the Hallows needed to gather souls and protect his own life, but fails to kill Harry before William, Hermione, and Vivian intervene 1091 1092.
- After Voldemort’s defeat, gathers the dead soul fragments and restores himself in the Vatican Secret Archives 1113.
Death’s Vessel
- Attempts to renegotiate his agreement by withholding Elaine’s figurine until the old man helps kill Dumbledore and William 1114.
- Gaunt reveals that he engineered Tom’s pursuit of the wand, the Prehistoric Mysteries, Death, and a complete soul. Hidden magical markings immobilize Tom, while the recovered Ark removes his means of escape through revival 1114.
- William tries to kill Tom before the descent completes, but the protective red hair defeats his sword. A skeletal manifestation merges into Tom as his soul and heart are drained 1115.
- During the ensuing battle, Death repeatedly returns despite William’s attacks, while Tom’s body becomes cracked and badly damaged 1120.
