Appearance
- Bald head and monk’s robes: Her identifying features when Xiahou first encounters her 31.
- Folding fan: Frequently held during conversations and used to reprimand Xiahou physically 37 38 40.
Personality
The Ancient One maintains a courteous, composed exterior even when Xiahou’s behavior infuriates her. Their first meeting establishes this contrast: she smiles and serves tea while privately acknowledging that killing or imprisoning him would not solve the problem posed by his resurrection. Her internal complaints also reveal a weary desire to leave her responsibilities behind 32.
Her indulgence toward Xiahou is deliberate rather than unconditional. She fears that persecution could turn him against the world, but also appeals to his underlying kindness and insists that other people’s lives are real. She accepts his willingness to retaliate against aggressors, drawing her clearest boundary at attacks on ordinary people 34 37.
She also has a mischievous and irritable side. She ejects Xiahou through a portal beneath his feet, strikes him with her fan when he insults her from afar, and considers fighting Mephisto as a way to vent her frustration 34 37 38 41.
History
Bringing Xiahou to Kamar-Taj
Shortly after Xiahou leaves his friends to travel across the United States, the Ancient One intercepts his motorcycle with a sparking portal. A mysterious ripple stops the vehicle in Kamar-Taj’s training yard, where she greets him before transporting them both to a tea room 31 32.
She announces that he will stay for two and a half years to adapt to the world and gain control over his abilities. Although she calls the arrangement an invitation rather than house arrest, she does not permit him to leave. She assigns her eldest disciple, Kaecilius, to supervise his training 32 39.
Her concealed motive is to prevent a disastrous future. In more than eighty percent of the timelines she has observed, Xiahou destroys the world; she fears that the conflict between mutants and ordinary people could lead to his capture, torture, and eventual turn toward evil. She also recognizes that death or banishment cannot permanently contain him because he can resurrect on Earth 32 34.
Magic, Fate, and Changed Futures
When Xiahou fails to operate a Sling Ring, the Ancient One explains that his internally generated magic lacks the standing needed to connect with the world’s space. Unlike Kamar-Taj’s sorcerers, who cultivate with borrowed magic, he must understand a spell’s underlying principles before he can use many of their techniques 35.
She initially tells him that major events are fixed and that Strange alone can inherit the position of Sorcerer Supreme in their universe. Nevertheless, after Xiahou helps Kaecilius speak with his deceased wife and reject Dormammu, she acknowledges that the future has changed. Smiling, she decides to prepare a new training plan for Strange 34 36.
The Ancient One later confronts Xiahou over his careless disclosure of future events. She warns that more than ten thousand worldlines were destroyed in the futures she observed because of such revelations. Having examined versions of this conversation thousands of times with the Time Stone, she obtains his promise to respect the world’s inhabitants and avoid harming those who do not provoke him 37.
Confinement and Departure
During Xiahou’s stay, his repeated visits eventually drive the Ancient One to relocate to New York. She nevertheless intervenes when Kaecilius mistakenly believes he has caused Xiahou’s permanent death in the Mirror Dimension, explaining that Xiahou will revive the following day 39.
At the end of the two and a half years, she serves Xiahou special tea that restores his mental state. She also explains that his soul and body are inseparable: his resurrection reconstitutes them rather than allowing an independently separable soul 40.
As compensation for his confinement, she agrees that Kamar-Taj can remain his respawn point and that he may request assistance from her or its sorcerers. She gives him a jade communication pendant and accepts a restorative Heaven’s Potion in return 40.
Before leaving, Xiahou tests his Quantum Bomb in the training grounds. The Ancient One immediately pulls the surrounding sorcerers into the Mirror Dimension and moves the bomb far away, reducing the shock wave reaching them to a breeze. She then returns his motorcycle and sends him away with another warning against revealing too much of the future 40.
The Proposed Mephisto Ambush
After his departure, Xiahou continues to invoke her protection. His claimed connection to the Sorcerer Supreme helps win Carter Slade’s trust, since Slade believes her presence forces Mephisto to operate on Earth covertly through avatars 44.
Xiahou contacts her through the jade pendant and proposes destroying Mephisto’s avatar when it appears. She initially refuses because the matter belongs to Johnny Blaze, but agrees after considering the cost of replacing an avatar and the opportunity to vent her anger. She instructs Xiahou to summon her at the crucial moment, since openly watching him would deter Mephisto from appearing 44.
