Background
Blade was raised by humans, with Whistler serving as his adoptive father and mentor. He regards humanity as his own people despite his vampire heritage and rejects the idea that humans exist as food for vampires 13 27.
Repeated betrayals, particularly by his own mother, left Blade reluctant to trust others. He became accustomed to fighting alone, a habit that later brought him into conflict with the Nightcrawler Squad over his willingness to sacrifice himself 24.
Personality
Blade is reserved, blunt, and highly conscious of looking impressive. He enjoys dramatic entrances and poses, envies Xiahou’s striking weapons and clothing, and becomes irritated when Xiahou undermines his image. His habitual posing earns him the nickname “Pose Bro” 16 18 21 30.
His commitment to destroying vampires extends to accepting his own death if necessary. Initially, he treats the fight as his personal responsibility; after his teammates challenge that attitude, he begins accepting their support. Following their victory over Drake, he feels the warmth of belonging to a family 23 24 25 29.
Blade also recognizes the emotional cost of killing. At the blood bank, he offers to handle the workers when he realizes Xiahou has never killed humans, then tries to comfort him afterward and gives him space during the drive home 30.
Abilities & Skills
Superhuman Physical Attributes
Blade’s tested strength and speed substantially exceed those of ordinary humans and the newly enhanced Xiahou 22.
| Attribute | Recorded Result | Conditions / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Punching force | 2,800 kilograms of force | Blade used approximately 80% of his strength 22. |
| Running speed | 130 meters per second | Recorded during a treadmill test 22. |
| Overall physical attributes | Approximately 25–30 times those of an ordinary person | Little Fatty’s assessment after strength, speed, reaction, and weightlifting tests 22. |
- Breaks his interrogation restraints after recovering with suppressant serum 13.
- Kicks a burly vampire through an interrogation-room wall 13.
- Survives a dramatic drop from the FBI building and later escapes the headquarters battle by jumping through a window 14 28.
Swordsmanship & Close Combat
Blade combines sword attacks with punches, spinning kicks, and evasive movement 13 16 28.
- Defeats Xiahou in their first sparring match, disarming him and placing a sword against his neck while deliberately holding back 16.
- Identifies Xiahou’s lack of practical combat experience and offers daily sparring after independent practice 16.
- Keeps Drake occupied during the headquarters assault, repeatedly wounding him with a silver-containing sword 26 27.
- Cannot overcome Drake’s regeneration with sword wounds alone; after Drake transforms, Blade is forced onto the defensive 27 28.
Half-Vampire Traits & Limitations
Blade retains vampire characteristics without sharing every vulnerability of ordinary vampires 23 26.
- Sunlight resistance: Neither Blade nor Drake fears sunlight; both continue fighting during Hannibal’s ultraviolet-grenade attack 26.
- Enhanced recovery: Xiahou identifies stronger recovery as one of Blade’s advantages 18.
- Fangs: Blade bares them when irritated by Xiahou’s teasing 30.
- Red Queen incompatibility: Touching Xiahou’s sword burns his hand. Xiahou suggests its anti-demon properties may react to Blade’s half-vampire nature, but this explanation remains a theory 22 23.
- Uncertain Daystar susceptibility: Field has not tested Daystar against Blade’s blood or genes, so its danger to him is unknown 23 24.
Equipment
- Silver-containing alloy longsword — Carried on his back and used against vampires. It wounds Drake, but cannot prevent his immediate regeneration 16 27.
- Handguns — Uses firearms during the FBI escape, headquarters assault, and blood-bank raid 13 26 30.
- Darts — Checks these alongside his pistol before attacking vampire headquarters 26.
- Suppressant serum — Supplied by Sommerfield and administered by Hannibal during the rescue; it restores Blade’s strength sufficiently for him to break free 11 13.
Relationships
- Whistler — Adoptive father and mentor. Hearing Hannibal call Abigail “Whistler” immediately catches Blade’s attention 13.
- Abigail Whistler — Teammate and Whistler’s daughter. She blames Blade for her father’s death and Xiahou’s apparent death, then later confronts his insistence on fighting alone 14 25.
- Hannibal King — Rescuer and teammate. Hannibal administers Blade’s serum, initially sympathizes with his willingness to sacrifice himself, and then urges him to trust the squad 13 24.
- Xiahou — Sparring partner and ally whose teasing frequently irritates him. Xiahou challenges his lone-hero mentality, helps defeat Drake, and accompanies him on the final blood-bank raid 16 18 24 28 30.
- Drake — Vampire progenitor and ideological opponent. Drake tries to recruit Blade, but Blade rejects his treatment of humans as prey 19 27.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Capture & FBI Rescue
Blade is captured before Abigail and Xiahou can intervene. The Nightcrawler Squad organizes a rescue, with Hannibal entering his interrogation room while Abigail and Xiahou disable surveillance 8 11 12 13.
After receiving suppressant serum, Blade breaks free and drives off his captors. During the escape, he leaves through a ventilation duct to retrieve his sword while Xiahou covers Abigail and Hannibal’s retreat. Believing Xiahou has died, Abigail confronts Blade, who apologizes after learning what happened 13 14.
Preparing to Fight Drake
Blade defeats the newly enhanced Xiahou in a sparring match and advises him to turn his acquired techniques into practical experience. He subsequently accompanies the group to Dr. Vance’s office, where they encounter Drake in disguise. Blade pursues Drake after Xiahou shoots him through a window, while Abigail collects blood for Daystar research 16 19.
When Daystar is completed, Blade declares that he will accept dying from it if doing so eliminates Drake and the other vampires. Xiahou argues that this sacrifice is unnecessary and dismisses the squad’s contribution. Hannibal also asks Blade to trust his teammates, prompting him to reconsider his solitary approach 23 24.
Blade’s initial apology still includes an offer to fight alone, provoking Abigail to punch him. He ultimately accepts Xiahou’s invitation to stand with the team and joins their collective pledge before the assault 25.
Headquarters Assault & Drake’s Defeat
Blade engages Drake while the others fight through the headquarters. His sword repeatedly wounds the progenitor without defeating his regeneration. When Xiahou arrives, they coordinate their attacks, and Blade covers him while he charges the Blue Rose 26 27 28.
At Xiahou’s warning, Blade withdraws before Daystar is deployed. He watches from a distant rooftop as the weapon destroys the remaining vampires, then alerts Hannibal that the police are approaching. Back at the safe house, the celebration gives him a sense of belonging 28 29.
Final Blood-Bank Raid
With Abigail and Hannibal recovering, Blade and Xiahou volunteer to destroy the last blood bank. They discover humans suspended in sealed bags and drained through tubes, then kill the facility’s human and vampire workers. Xiahou burns the warehouse, and Blade tries to reassure him afterward when the violence leaves him shaken rather than triumphant 30.
