Background / History

Entry into the Marvel World

Xiahou was an ordinary gamer who volunteered to test a Soonami virtual-reality pod. After its installation, he selected the Marvel Universe and lost consciousness during the connection process. A fire subsequently engulfed his bedroom, destroying his original body while he continued exploring the other world 1 2 3.

Initially treating everyone around him as NPCs, he provoked a passerby and was shot dead. His resurrection confirmed that he possessed player-like mechanics, but he could find neither a logout option nor customer service. His concern about returning home included his family, friends, and unfed cat 3 8.

Nightcrawler Squad and the Vampire Campaign

While seeking shelter in a subway station, Xiahou intervened when four vampires attacked Abigail Whistler and a baby. Recognizing Abigail from a film, he disclosed what he remembered about her father’s impending death and the Nightcrawler Squad’s future destruction. Abigail later invited him to join the squad while he searched for a way home 7 10.

During Blade’s rescue, Xiahou stayed behind to cover Abigail and Hannibal’s retreat. He was killed by gunfire, then resurrected at the squad’s base. His subsequent defeat in a spar with Blade exposed the gap between possessing combat knowledge and having actual fighting experience 13 14 16.

Xiahou’s growing abilities made him a major combatant in the attack on Drake’s headquarters. After holding the stairwell against the vampire reinforcements, he joined Blade, weakened Drake with Daystar, and beheaded him with Red Queen. Daystar’s spreading dust then destroyed the remaining vampires inside the building 25 27 28.

He and Blade later destroyed the final blood bank, discovering humans suspended in bags and drained of blood. Killing the facility’s human and vampire workers left Xiahou troubled rather than satisfied by his apparent victory. After a farewell feast, he left the squad to explore the world 30 31.

Two and a Half Years at Kamar-Taj

The Ancient One brought Xiahou to Kamar-Taj for two and a half years of training and adjustment, assigning Kaecilius to oversee him. Xiahou regarded the enforced stay as confinement and repeatedly complained about the lack of entertainment and outside communication 32 33 41.

His intervention also changed Kaecilius’s future. Using Spirit Phone, Xiahou connected him with his dead wife, who urged him to stop pursuing resurrection and continue protecting Earth. Kaecilius subsequently vowed never to join Dormammu 36.

The Ancient One confronted Xiahou over his careless disclosure of future events, explaining that she had seen more than ten thousand worldlines destroyed by the resulting chaos. He acknowledged that his growing power had made him arrogant and promised to respect the world’s inhabitants as real people 37.

Although he failed to learn Kamar-Taj’s magic, Xiahou developed into a seasoned warrior through physical training and Siegfried’s dream instruction. Before his departure, the Ancient One restored his mental balance with tea, explained the nature of his resurrection, and allowed him to use Kamar-Taj as a respawn point 35 38 39 40.

Travels and Johnny Blaze’s Commission

After leaving Kamar-Taj, Xiahou contacted Hannibal and learned that the squad was fighting vampires and werewolves in the United Kingdom. He resumed traveling, rescued Alisa from an armed truck driver, and considered opening a commission agency named Ready Player One 41 42 43.

In New York, he followed Ghost Rider to a cemetery and introduced himself to Johnny Blaze and Carter Slade. Johnny hired him for four million dollars to protect Roxanne and help confront Blackheart and Mephisto’s avatar. Xiahou took custody of the San Venganza Contract and personally explained the danger to Roxanne 43 45 46.

Before the confrontation, he merged with the Ultra-Small Flawless Holy Grail and summoned Mordred. She accepted his invitation to experience another life, fight powerful opponents, and help ordinary people. The two then departed with Johnny and Slade for San Venganza 48 49.

Appearance

Xiahou describes himself as an average-looking young man, neither handsome nor ugly. He has black hair and black eyes; after enhancement, his muscles become defined without becoming especially bulky 1 21.

Personality

Xiahou is irreverent, talkative, and fond of showing off. He poses with his equipment, teases Blade about his dramatic entrances, and reacts theatrically to disappointing prize draws. His increasingly frequent self-talk initially serves as a way to manage the anxiety of being unable to leave the game 7 11 16 21 30.

His insistence that the world is a game partly protects him from confronting separation from his original life. Abigail’s grief makes him question that belief, and he becomes agitated when she directly suggests that her world might be real. He nevertheless apologizes and explains that he still has family elsewhere 8 18.

Despite dismissing superheroes as constrained by other people’s expectations, Xiahou repeatedly risks himself for his companions. His respect for Siegfried’s selflessness, discomfort after the blood-bank killings, and response to the Ancient One’s criticism reveal limits to his cynical treatment of the world 8 13 20 30 37.

He values freedom but can commit himself to improvement once he recognizes its necessity. Blade’s criticism prompts him to practice rather than rely solely on purchased knowledge, while his eventual promise to respect others retains a firm boundary: he will retaliate against those who attack him 16 17 37.

• Blue Rose — Bound revolver with unlimited ammunition and three enhanced power levels.
