Power Progression

The following progression concerns the main-timeline Gohan; alternate versions are listed separately under Alternate-Timeline Counterparts.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Weakened Mystic State 9 Retains the transformation unlocked through Old Kai’s potential release, but two years without training leave his body unable to use even half its power effectively.
Reawakening combat instincts 10 Sparring with Goku restores his instinctive fighting movements, increasing his speed, strength, reactions, and Mystic State output during the battle.
Former peak restored 21 Regular exercise brings him back to his previous peak. He is identified as Earth’s third-strongest fighter at this point.
Beyond his previous peak 105 Serious training during Goku’s absence makes his ki several times stronger than it was at Bulma’s birthday party.
Predictive battle instinct 107 108 Learns Hit’s attack patterns well enough to counter his 0.1-second Time-Skip. Hit’s improvement to 0.2 seconds initially defeats those predictions.
Super Saiyan Beast 109 110 Anger drives a breakthrough beyond Mystic State. Whis judges its power increase greater than Super Saiyan 4’s when comparing equal base combat power.
Beast transformation at will 121 123 After three months, Gohan can transform freely, but Goku identifies lingering energy leakage and excessive excitement. Gohan makes controlling both his next training goals.
God Ki mastery 148 Two months of training under Whis improve his base power and transformations, allowing him to apply God Ki to his existing forms.
Super Mystic State 149 Layers God Ki over Mystic State. Goku assesses the resulting transformation as being on the same level as Super Saiyan Blue.
Super Saiyan Beast God 150 Reinforces Beast with God Ki, reaching the Quasi-God of Destruction realm, though still below a true God of Destruction at this stage.
Super Saiyan Beast · God Ki Sublimation 183 184 Further refines Beast God with purer God Ki, overwhelms Toppo’s God of Destruction form, and defeats him with Beast Soul · Burst.
Beyond most established Gods of Destruction 241 Three years after the Tournament of Power, his existing God Ki Sublimation form has grown strong enough to surpass most long-established Gods of Destruction.

Appearance

  • Mystic State: Black hair spikes upward, surrounded by a stark white aura and blue-white electricity 9 149.
  • Super Saiyan Beast: Silver-white hair stands fiercely upright; his pupils turn blood-red, his muscles swell, and a silver baleful aura surrounds him 109.
  • Super Saiyan Beast God: His hair becomes more upright and silvery, his eyes turn blue, and his savage aura gains a sacred radiance 150.
  • God Ki Sublimation: Silver-white lightning coils around his body as purer God Ki strengthens the transformation 183.

Personality

Gohan is ordinarily refined, easygoing, and devoted to scholarship. During peacetime, he initially prioritizes college and academic research so completely that his fighting ability declines. After Goku confronts him about the danger of neglecting training, he promises to pursue both his mother’s hopes for a scholar and his father’s hopes for a dependable warrior 2 9 110.

His father’s recognition is a powerful source of motivation. Goku’s encouragement during the fight with Hit resolves a longstanding emotional barrier and allows Gohan to fight without reservations. He later seeks opportunities to demonstrate his progress, while remaining willing to bow, acknowledge his shortcomings, and ask for instruction after losing 107 118 123 150.

Large increases in power can make him overconfident. Upon awakening Beast, he believes he can defeat Goku’s Super Saiyan 4, unaware of his father’s actual strength. Beast also intensifies his excitement and desire to continue fighting until his opponent is beaten—an issue he explicitly works to overcome 111 121 123.

Despite his increasingly fierce combat style, he can exercise restraint. Against Lavender, he wins decisively but deliberately shows mercy rather than killing him 156.

Abilities & Skills

Instinctive Combat

Gohan’s fighting techniques remain embedded in his body even after prolonged inactivity, allowing combat to reawaken skills he has neglected 10.

  • Learns Hit’s attack patterns and anticipates strikes delivered through 0.1-second Time-Skip 107 108.
  • In Beast form, senses and evades Invisible Ki Blasts, then counters an attack launched from Time-Skip Space 111.
  • Can attack and evade simultaneously, placing pressure on Goku’s base form during their spar 122.
  • Limit: His instincts are not Ultra Instinct. Whis explains that Beast heightens his reactions and combat instincts, whereas Ultra Instinct enables independent bodily responses without conscious thought 112.
  • Unfulfilled goal: After learning that Ultra Instinct is a realm rather than a transformation, he resolves to pursue it and combine it with Beast; the supplied chapters do not confirm that he succeeds 127.

God Ki Cultivation

Goku passes on the divine cultivation method he learned from Old Kai, advising Gohan to use it after stabilizing Beast. Whis subsequently guides his training in the God of Destruction Realm 123 148.

  • Strengthens Mystic State directly instead of first developing Super Saiyan God, contrary to Whis’s expectations 149 151.
  • Applies divine power to Beast, developing Beast God and later God Ki Sublimation 150 183.
  • By the Beast God stage, his aura conceals weaknesses that Goku could previously identify in ordinary Beast 150.

Energy Techniques

Technique Applications and limits
Compressed Ki Blast Concentrates energy in one hand and throws it at Goku during their field-work spar 9.
Special Beam Cannon Fires a highly piercing beam. Against Toppo, increasing its output drives him into the arena despite his initial attempt to charge through it 122 160.
Light Grenade A technique taught by Piccolo. Gohan scatters numerous blasts around an opponent, then directs them inward; Toppo counters the barrage with Justice Flash 159.
Beast Soul · Burst Solidifies God Ki into a roaring primordial beast. It destroys Toppo’s Destruction Sphere, breaks through his power, and leaves him unconscious 184.
Energy barriers Can create barriers, although he acknowledges that Goku uses them with far greater skill 122.

Academic Research

  • Attends college and devotes substantial time to academic research 9.
  • Receives a professor’s recognition for an academic report, freeing time for additional training 121.
  • Continues researching while maintaining regular training after the Tournament of Power 225.

History

Return to Training

Two years after Majin Buu’s defeat, Gohan has largely abandoned training in favor of his studies. Goku draws him into a spar intended to prepare farmland through controlled shockwaves, but quickly exposes his slowed reactions and weakened Mystic State. Gohan responds by promising to become both an outstanding scholar and a reliable warrior 9.

The fight reawakens his instincts, although Goku’s full base-form power still overwhelms him. His subsequent training is initially modest—simple exercises fitted around his studies—but eventually restores his former strength 10 12 21.

Goku’s Disappearance and the Fight with Hit

When Goku vanishes after the confrontation with Beerus, Gohan comforts Chi-Chi and Goten despite his own doubts. The possibility that his father may never return forces him to consider inheriting the responsibility of protecting the universe, and the shock drives him to train seriously 51 112.

At the Universe Martial Arts Tournament, Hit initially dominates him with Time-Skip and repeated vital-point strikes. After Goku returns and encourages him, Gohan begins predicting Hit’s attacks. Hit responds by extending Time-Skip and seriously injuring him with a blow over the heart 105 107 108.

Gohan rises again and uses anger to break beyond Mystic State, awakening Super Saiyan Beast. His new speed and instincts overwhelm Hit’s direct attacks, Invisible Ki Blasts, and strikes from Time-Skip Space. He eventually releases a destructive energy wave in an attempt to destroy that space, shattering the arena beneath him 109 110 111 113.

Training under Goku and Whis

Three months after Goku’s return, Gohan seeks a spar to measure his Beast form against his father. He pressures base Goku and lands heavy blows, but his demand to see Goku’s full strength brings out Super Saiyan 5, God of Destruction form. Goku ends the fight by stopping a potentially fatal punch a centimeter from his cheek 121 122 123.

Recognizing his shortcomings, Gohan accepts the God Ki cultivation method and Whis’s invitation to train. Two months of guidance produce Super Mystic State and Super Saiyan Beast God, both demonstrated in another spar with Goku 123 148 149 150.

Tournament of Power

Gohan decisively defeats Lavender during the preliminary matches, then steps into the arena when Toppo challenges Goku. He initially matches Toppo in Mystic State before revealing Super Mystic State and gaining the upper hand 156 159 160.

Before the main tournament, he recruits Piccolo, Majin Buu, Android 17, Android 18, Trunks, and Goten for Universe 7’s team 164 167.

During the tournament, Piccolo draws Pirina and Saonel away so Gohan can face Toppo. After Toppo adopts God of Destruction power, Gohan unveils God Ki Sublimation and defeats him with Beast Soul · Burst. Later, he rescues Gotenks from Kefla and overwhelms her, but Super Jiren’s arena-destroying energy eruption ultimately eliminates Gohan alongside several remaining fighters 183 184 197 201.

Earth’s Protector and the Dark Realm Invasion

After the tournament, Gohan maintains both his research and regular training. During Goku’s three-year absence, with Vegeta also away from Earth, he becomes the planet’s principal defender and deals with Moro after his escape from the Galactic Prison 225 241.

When a dark red vortex appears above West City, Gohan and Piccolo investigate together. Inside, they encounter Vegeta under an evil influence. Gohan immediately uses Super Saiyan Beast · God Ki Sublimation; both he and Piccolo have grown substantially stronger since the tournament, but Vegeta attacks them with enormous demonic claws 241.

Relationships

  • Son Goku — Father, training partner, and a central source of motivation. His disappearance prompts Gohan’s serious return to training, while his encouragement helps unlock Beast 51 107 112.
  • Chi-Chi — Mother. Gohan explicitly includes her hopes for his academic future in his promise to balance scholarship and combat 9.
  • Son Goten — Younger brother. Gohan reassures him after Goku’s disappearance and later recruits him for the Tournament of Power 8 51 167.
  • Videl — Romantic partner. They are deeply in love and discussing marriage early in the story; she later introduces Pan to Goku as his granddaughter 2 119.
  • Pan — Daughter. Piccolo frequently cares for her while Gohan continues his academic and martial pursuits 119 121 225.
  • Piccolo — Master and trusted battlefield partner. He recognizes Gohan’s potential, worries about his tendency to neglect training, and coordinates with him through a single exchanged glance 110 112 183.
  • Whis — Divine instructor. Guides Gohan’s God Ki development, clarifies the nature of Ultra Instinct, and helps him refine his existing transformations 123 127 148 151.
  • Vegeta — Respected senior warrior, addressed as “Uncle Vegeta.” Praises Gohan’s progress but warns him not to waste his newly awakened power 124 151.
  • Hit — Tournament opponent whose techniques push Gohan toward predictive combat and Beast. Their fight also drives Hit to improve his own Time-Skip 107 108 109.
  • Toppo — Recurring opponent. Their rivalry culminates in Gohan defeating his God of Destruction form during the Tournament of Power 159 183 184.

Alternate-Timeline Counterparts

Despair-Timeline Gohan

This Gohan was killed by the androids. King Yemma allowed his soul to retain its body because he was Goku’s son. After Goku Black kills King Yemma and devastates the Other World, Gohan becomes its sole remaining keeper of order, dealing with escaped souls 59.

He mistakes the visiting Goku for Goku Black, transforms into Super Saiyan Second Grade, and attacks with Masenko followed by a lethal close-range assault. Goku finds him far more experienced and efficient than the Gohan of his own timeline. Once the misunderstanding is resolved, Gohan apologizes and acknowledges Goku as his father from another timeline 59 60.

Gohan after Goku’s Second Rebirth

In the extra chapter’s new timeline, Goku again names his eldest son after Grandpa Son Gohan. This Gohan has two younger brothers: the twins Goten and Son Gou 259.

  • Already possesses Super Saiyan 1 while still a young child 259.
  • Transforms calmly and naturally, with minimal aura leakage 259.
  • Serves as Goku’s example when teaching Goten and Gou to control their energy and transformation-induced excitement 259.
