Background and History

Ancient God of Destruction

Beerus has existed since the birth of the universe and accumulated combat experience over countless ages under Whis’s instruction. His office involves more than destroying planets: he removes anything detrimental to the universe’s development and balance. The Gods of Destruction also protect their universes against interference from outsiders belonging to other worlds 18 36 214.

Before the main story, Beerus sealed Old Kai inside the Z Sword. Goku later interprets this as a safeguard against someone killing the Supreme Kais and thereby killing Beerus through their linked lives 18 97.

Beerus also appointed Frieza as his representative, although he intended to destroy him at their next meeting. During Vegeta’s childhood, Beerus pinned King Vegeta beneath his foot while demanding the best pillow in the universe. A single glance from Beerus frightened the young prince into immobility, leaving a humiliation Vegeta remembered decades later 19 20.

Awakening and the Search for the Super Saiyan God

Beerus awakens after thirty-seven years of sleep. His uncontrolled release of destruction power alarms gods throughout the universe, who associate his awakening with another purge. Whis explains that the destructive outburst also vents power accumulated during Beerus’s sleep 18.

Learning that a Saiyan killed Frieza draws Beerus’s attention to Goku and Vegeta. Their transformations, particularly Super Saiyan 4, remind him of the Super Saiyan God from his dream and the Oracle Fish’s prediction. He travels to Earth to investigate, arriving during Bulma’s birthday gathering 19 20.

Vegeta challenges him to reclaim the Saiyans’ dignity. Beerus dominates his successive transformations, eventually stopping Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta’s strongest attack with one hand and striking him over a thousand meters away 20 22 24.

Battle with Goku

When Goku cannot identify the Super Saiyan God, Beerus decides to destroy Earth. Goku intervenes in Super Saiyan 4, but Beerus restrains his wrist with his tail and subjects him to a heavy beating. Goku escapes by biting the tail, then kicks Beerus across Earth into an iceberg 26 27.

Their renewed battle pushes Goku into increasingly powerful states. Beerus remains largely untroubled until Dragon Fist wounds his chest and destroys his divine clothing—the first injury he says he has ever received from a mortal. Beerus’s destruction energy also triggers Goku’s latent God Ki, bringing about Super Saiyan 4 God 30 32 34.

Beerus praises the breakthrough but raises his power further. Recognizing that he cannot win alone, Goku returns to Earth to seek fusion with Vegeta 34.

Battle with Gogeta

The resulting Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta gives Beerus a much more demanding fight. Gogeta’s attacks send him through multiple planets, prompting Beerus to release his true God of Destruction Power and repair his injuries 36 38 40.

Beerus initially dominates Gogeta’s God State. When Gogeta reaches Super Saiyan 4 God Blue, however, Beerus recognizes him as the rival from his prophetic dream 41 42.

Gogeta’s nine energy avatars force Beerus to use imperfect Ultra Instinct and eventually expend a large burst of destruction energy to eliminate them. Their final exchange pits Beerus’s Ultimate Destruction Sphere against Gogeta’s escalating Big Bang Kamehameha, shaking the Twelve Universes and threatening the World of Void 44 45 46.

Goku subsequently absorbs the sphere’s destruction power inside a cocoon. Beerus attempts to destroy it, only for his attack to become nourishment. When the cocoon breaks, he realizes that his own destruction power has passed to a new master 49.

Exhausted, Beerus requires Whis’s rescue from the resulting space-time storm. After Goku disappears, Beerus assumes that the breakthrough failed and sincerely regrets losing him. He also leaves the dying Vegeta alive rather than finishing him off 50 51.

Future-World Counterpart

In the future world visited by Goku, Beerus dies without being defeated in direct combat. Whis explains that the Supreme Kai’s death during Trunks’s conflict with Dabura also caused Beerus to disappear through their shared life link. The destruction of the Z Sword killed the Old Kai sealed inside it as well 97.

With that world’s Gods of Destruction dead, Whis seeks replacements. Broly accepts the position of Universe 7’s God of Destruction Candidate 97.

Goku’s Return and Secluded Training

Beerus encounters Goku again during the Universe 6–Universe 7 tournament. Although outwardly dismissive, he is disturbed by how quickly Goku has approached the power of the Gogeta he previously fought 105 106 107.

He later confronts Goku over his mastery of God of Destruction Power, suspecting that the Saiyan wants his position. Goku denies any interest in the office. Beerus nevertheless permits Goku and Gohan to visit the God of Destruction Realm for training 123.

After witnessing Goku’s Ultra Instinct and Vegeta’s growing strength, Beerus abandons sleep and retreats deeper into his realm. He emerges stronger, having perfected Ultra Instinct during his seclusion 130 151 183.

Tournament of Power and the Gods’ Battle

Beerus accompanies Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta to Zeno’s Palace when ordered to bring three powerful warriors. During the tournament preparations, he assigns Old Kai to unlock the contestants’ potential and openly backs Universe 7 against the hostility of other universes 152 165 168.

After the Tournament of Power, Goku’s battles with the Gods of Destruction force Beerus to weigh his enjoyment of their defeats against his responsibility to uphold their collective dignity. He eventually fights Super Saiyan 5 Goku in an even contest of strength 208 211.

Against Goku’s Super Saiyan 5 Extreme Sublimation state, Beerus becomes the vessel for the other eleven Gods of Destruction. Their fusion creates Destruction, whose aura divides the World of Void against Goku’s and who breaks free of Goku’s spatial confinement 214.

Beerus is later present as an individual again, returning to the God of Destruction Realm with Whis and Broly 225.

Appearance

Personality

Beerus is arrogant, aloof, eccentric, and difficult to read. He repeatedly belittles mortals as inferior to gods, provoking Vegeta and dismissing even Gogeta’s divine transformations as the power of a “false god.” His temperament contributes to poor relations with almost every other God of Destruction 22 39 40.

Beneath that superiority is a genuine hunger for challenging combat. Long-standing invincibility has left him bored, and the prohibition against private battles between Gods of Destruction limits his opportunities. Goku and Gogeta revive his enthusiasm; he praises attacks that hurt him and acknowledges exceptional opponents even while fighting them 34 37 41 42 45.

He loves good food, has a destructive waking temper, and can abruptly shift from laziness to urgency. After seclusion, his immediate priority is eating Earth’s delicacies—until Zeno’s summons makes him abandon that demand at once 18 41 151 152.
