Power Progression
The table follows the protagonist’s development, not transformations achieved by his alternate-world counterparts.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Super Saiyan Full Power → Second Grade Peak → Third Grade Peak | 1 | Tests his younger body after rebirth. Retains exceptional transformation control, but lacking a tail causes continuous energy loss in Third Grade. |
| Controlled Great Ape | 5 6 | Uses Blutz Waves to activate his bloodline. Previous experience lets him suppress the form’s destructive instincts; its power rivals his current Third Grade. |
| Golden Great Ape | 6 7 | Activates Super Saiyan power while transformed into a Great Ape. His fur turns gold and his enormous body doubles in size. |
| Super Saiyan 4 | 7 8 | Compresses Golden Great Ape power into a humanoid form. Gains balanced physical enhancements and lower energy consumption; afterward, his base power is nearly twice its previous level. |
| Perfect mastery of Super Saiyan 4 | 11 | A year of training gives him voluntary control over the transformation, its aura, and its heightened excitement. |
| Potential unlocking and God Ki instruction | 14 | Receives Old Kai’s teachings while undergoing three hours of potential unlocking. Old Kai exhausts himself before reaching the limit of Goku’s reserves. |
| Super Saiyan 4: Limit Breaker | 29 | Neutralizes Beerus’s destruction sphere from within. His hair and pupils turn red; mortal power remains dominant, but Beerus detects powerful God Ki. |
| Super Saiyan 4: God State | 32 33 | Awakens under Beerus’s destruction energy. God Ki raises both his strength and level of existence, allowing him to survive in space. |
| Super Saiyan 4 God Blue | 47 | Breaks through after Vegeta transfers his remaining energy. The form still cannot stop Beerus’s Ultimate Destruction Sphere. |
| Super Saiyan 5 God of Destruction | 50 | Emerges after the souls from two space-times merge, elevating his body and soul and awakening ancient bloodline power. |
| Stabilized Super Saiyan 5 | 61 74 | Processes his battle experience through meditation and later becomes able to unleash the form’s full power. |
| Separate Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue forms | 68 99 | Establishes that he can use the divine transformation route independently of Super Saiyan 4; later demonstrates both with no God Ki leakage. |
| Super Saiyan Blue Evolved Evolution | 99 | Develops a transformation beyond Blue after absorbing the lessons of his battle with Vegito. |
| Super Saiyan 4 God Deep Blue Evolution | 100 | Combines evolved God Ki with controlled bloodline power. Whis estimates that its combat power surpasses some lower-ranked Gods of Destruction. |
| Ultra Instinct Sign — unstable | 126 | Improves through sparring with Vegeta. Less powerful than Super Saiyan 5, but superior in automatic evasion and precise judgment. |
| Ultra Instinct — completely mastered | 182 | Whis confirms that Goku can use the technique at will without a dedicated transformation. |
| Dual manifestation: Super Saiyan 5 God of Destruction and Super Saiyan Blue 3 Ultra Instinct | 209 | Separates into two selves, each taking on five Gods of Destruction. |
| Reunification and new transformation | 212 | Reabsorbs his Blue 3 self. Purple, silver, white, and deep-blue energies begin merging around him. |
| Super Saiyan 5 Extreme Sublimation | 217 | Combines bloodline power, God Ki, the Power of Laws, and peak Ultra Instinct against the Ultimate God of Destruction. |
| Super Saiyan Sixth Stage: Ultimate Realm Sublimation | 223 225 | Reveals his self-developed transformation beyond Super Saiyan 5 Extreme Sublimation. |
| Refined Super Saiyan 6 | 232 | After half a year of consolidation, transforms without leaking energy and fights without wasting it. Opens the Dragon Realm’s wish-power barrier. |
| Peak mastery of Super Saiyan 6 | 241 243 | Three years of space-time travel deepen his command of laws and bring the transformation to its peak, with no preliminary buildup or energy leakage. |
| Sacrifice of all power | 250 | Gives up his power to summon alternate Son Gokus. Becomes physically frail, with neither detectable energy nor a detectable Saiyan bloodline. |
| Second rebirth — powerless child | 258 | His surviving soul reaches Age 737. Awakens in his childhood body with his power gone. |
| Partial recovery after twenty-four years | 259 | Rebuilds his strength through training and retained experience. Has not recovered his former peak, but is overwhelmingly stronger than anyone in the current era. |
Background / History
Destruction of the GT World and First Rebirth
Goku originally comes from the GT world, where Omega Shenron’s Negative Karma Ball swallows him during the Shadow Dragon crisis. His consciousness drifts through darkness before following a mysterious voice toward a light. He awakens on King Kai’s Planet in Age 776, occupying another world’s younger Son Goku fourteen years earlier, two years after Majin Buu’s defeat 1.
Initially believing he has returned to his own past, Goku resolves to prevent the catastrophe he remembers. He regrets that Gogeta wasted the opportunity to kill Syn Shenron and recognizes that excessive Dragon Ball use caused the Shadow Dragons. He therefore intends to avoid further wishes except when necessary 1 3.
Rebuilding His Strength
Drawing on his previous life’s experience, Goku repeats the Great Ape–Golden Great Ape route and regains Super Saiyan 4. A year of dedicated training gives him much finer control than before. He also pushes Gohan to resume training, hoping to prevent his son’s extraordinary potential from going unused again 5 6 7 9 11.
Old Kai subsequently teaches him God Ki cultivation and unlocks part of his latent potential. Rather than choosing between the two opportunities, Goku persuades him to provide both 14.
Battle with Beerus
Goku challenges Beerus to protect Earth, first using Super Saiyan 4 and then increasingly powerful combinations of bloodline energy and God Ki. During the battle, he escapes Beerus’s grip by biting his tail, awakens Super Saiyan 4: God State under destruction energy, and survives a supermassive star’s explosion 26 27 29 32 33.
Even Super Saiyan 4 God Blue, awakened with Vegeta’s remaining energy, cannot halt Beerus’s Ultimate Destruction Sphere. As the sphere consumes his body and soul, Goku undergoes another transformation. The souls from his two lives merge into a new Son Goku, awakening Super Saiyan 5 God of Destruction 47 50.
The Ruined Future and Alternate Saiyans
Goku reaches a devastated future Earth and confronts Goku Black, who has stolen another version of his body. After eliminating Black’s threat, Goku promises Bulma that he will not let this Earth be destroyed. His attempt to arrange revivals is frustrated by the ruined Other World and the slaughter of Planet Namek’s inhabitants 52 54 55 59 60 61.
At Bulma’s request, he impersonates Goku Black to pressure Trunks into becoming a stronger protector. This leads to battles with the Super-Space-Time versions of Goku and Vegeta, whose Super Saiyan Blue forms initially fall far short of his strength. His confrontation eventually extends to Vegito; afterward, he returns to Earth carrying the unconscious alternate Goku and Vegeta 61 62 63 64 66 94.
During this period, he also befriends Broly. After recognizing Broly’s kind nature, he teaches him methods for controlling his power 74.
The Grand Priest’s Revelation
The Grand Priest confirms that he arranged Goku’s rebirth and takes him into the Space-Time Corridor. There, Goku witnesses Bardock’s final resistance against Frieza and nearly enters the timeline to save him, only to be stopped 102.
The Grand Priest then shows him both his original world’s destruction and another outcome in which Goku defeated Omega Shenron. Offered the opportunity to change his former world, Goku refuses, acknowledging the consequences of altering the past. He instead returns to the world where he fought Beerus, using the Time Ring to navigate the passage 103.
Tournament of Power and the Gods of Destruction
After returning, Goku reunites with his family and meets his granddaughter Pan. He gains Zeno’s favor, continues developing Ultra Instinct, and encounters Jiren in Universe 11. Their first major battle ends with Goku defeating Jiren’s life-consuming final attack and then saving him by transferring ki 118 119 126 139 145.
At the Tournament of Power, Jiren returns as Super Jiren after merging with his future self. Goku answers with his own combined mortal and divine power, reveals complete mastery of Ultra Instinct, and eventually uses Super Saiyan 5. Their ultimate attacks shatter the World of Void 170 182 185.
Goku later fights the Gods of Destruction, divides into two manifestations, and reunites to produce stronger forms. Against the Ultimate God of Destruction—the fusion of all twelve—he uses Super Saiyan 5 Extreme Sublimation before unveiling Super Saiyan 6. Despite his achievements, he refuses Zeno’s offer to become God of Order and chooses to return to his family 209 212 217 223 224.
Journey Through Space-Time
Half a year later, Goku begins another journey through parallel worlds. In the AF world, he intervenes against Zaiko, discovers Lyra’s manipulation, heals the defeated warriors, and ultimately seals Zaiko’s power. He then enters the Dragon Realm and meets AF Son Goku, defeating him with Super Saiyan Blue 3 after an escalating contest 225 226 227 230 232 237.
Over the next three years, Goku fights numerous alternate versions of himself, repairs space-time rifts, and strengthens his command of laws. Upon returning, he confronts Vegeta’s Dark Super Saiyan 6; the destruction of countless space-times during their clash hardens his resolve to stop his rival 241 243 245.
The Great Evil God and Second Rebirth
Against the Great Evil God, Goku sacrifices all his power to summon counterparts from other space-times. Initially too weak to fight, he depends on their protection as more versions arrive through the shattered Wall of Rules 250 251.
The Great Evil God is ultimately defeated at the cost of Goku’s power, body, and soul. Although his counterparts cannot determine whether he survived, a remnant of his soul crosses the river of time. He awakens as a powerless child in Age 737, where Grandpa Son Gohan finds him on Mount Paozu and takes him in 258.
Extra Chapters: A New Family Life
Twenty-four years after his second rebirth, Goku has largely allowed familiar events to unfold, with one crucial exception: he prevents Grandpa Gohan’s death by Great Ape and lets him live peacefully until old age. The preserved Ox-King fortune also removes his family’s financial strain, allowing Chi-Chi to support his training 259.
Goku and Chi-Chi have three sons in this life: Gohan, followed by the twins Goten and Gou. When Raditz arrives, Goku refuses to leave Earth and offers his brother protection from Vegeta, seeking to avoid their previous mutual death under Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon 259 260.
Appearance
- Super Saiyan 4: A tall, muscular, red-furred humanoid with waist-length black hair and golden eyes 7 17.
- Super Saiyan 4: Limit Breaker: Retains the Super Saiyan 4 physique, but his hair and pupils become vivid red 29.
- Super Saiyan Blue 3: Has waist-length deep-blue hair and is surrounded by deep-blue divine lightning 237.
- Second rebirth: Returns to a small, tailed childhood body; by the extra chapters, he has grown into an adult again 258 259.
Personality
Goku retains his love of fighting, readily abandoning fieldwork when Vegeta offers a worthwhile challenge. Powerful opponents excite him even when they injure him, and he treats difficult training environments as opportunities rather than obstacles 16 30 167.
His previous world’s destruction makes him more reflective about responsibility. He regrets wasting the chance to defeat Syn Shenron, questions reliance on the Dragon Balls, and urges Gohan not to wait for disaster before training. Nevertheless, he explicitly refuses to dictate his son’s future 3 9.
He can be ruthless when trying to force another warrior to grow. His impersonation of Goku Black subjects Trunks to genuine despair, although he privately regrets the suffering involved and sees it as preparation for protecting Earth 61 66.
His compassion is equally pronounced: he befriends Broly, saves Jiren after defeating him, and recognizes Zaiko as a manipulated child rather than simply an enemy. For all his divine power, Goku values ordinary pleasures—food, rest, family, and training—and rejects a divine office that would separate him from that life 74 145 182 224 227.
