Duties and Authority

Universal Balance

  • Periodic purges: Gods of Destruction eliminate unqualified or superfluous planets and anything threatening universal balance 18.
  • Removal of harmful beings and objects: Their work extends beyond planetary destruction to anything detrimental to the universe’s development 18.
  • Negative Energy disposal: Accumulated Negative Energy is treated as a universal impurity that must be erased 18 233 234.
  • Protection against outsiders: They destroy beings from other worlds when those beings interfere with the universe 214.
  • Physical cost: Completing this work places an enormous burden on the god’s body. Beerus’s long periods of sleep accompany a workload described as greater than the Supreme Kai’s 18.

Divine Hierarchy

  • Zeno: Can personally reprimand Gods of Destruction for neglecting their duties. Beerus and Champa bow to him and react fearfully to his arrival 117.
  • Grand Priest: Directs the selection of replacements; Whis cites his command when recruiting Broly 96.
  • Supreme Kais: Handle creation. Their positions are outwardly equal to those of Gods of Destruction, although the narration places the destruction office one rank higher in practice 18.
  • Angels: Attend and train the gods. Whis’s role as Beerus’s teacher demonstrates that an attendant can surpass the god in strength 99 100.

Known Holders

The Twelve Universes each have a God of Destruction. The following holders are named in the documented events 48 214.

Universe Holder Notable details
1 Iwan Presides over a universe with an exceptionally high average mortal level; ranks among the strongest Gods of Destruction 204 207.
2 Heles Accompanied by Sour; warns Liger during the battle against Son Goku 48 206.
3 Mosco Has a mechanical body and attacks Goku alongside Rumsshi 206 208.
4 Quitela Beerus’s mouse-like rival; markedly stronger than Rumsshi and Mosco 153 173 208.
5 Arak One of the strongest holders; joins Iwan in attacking Goku 207.
6 Champa Beerus’s blood brother; attended by Vados 38.
7 Beerus Repeatedly identified as the foremost of the twelve and described as a “Super God of Destruction”; trained by Whis 34 36.
8 Liger A fox who carefully grooms his appearance; attended by Cus 39.
9 Sidra Uses highly compressed Destruction Spheres, but is swiftly defeated by Goku 205 206.
10 Rumsshi An elephant-like god defeated by Goku’s 20x Kamehameha; later found dying by Belmod and Marcarita 132 140 146.
11 Belmod A clown-like god associated with Marcarita and the candidate Toppo 146 158 183.

Candidates and Alternate Holders

  • Broly — Becomes Universe 7’s candidate in the parallel world where Beerus has died. Whis offers training to help him master his unstable power 96 97.
  • Toppo — Universe 11’s candidate and captain of the Pride Troopers. Uses a God of Destruction transformation during the Tournament of Power; Belmod remains the universe’s established holder 158 183.
  • Son Goku, protagonist — Considered by Whis as a possible replacement in the devastated world, but later explicitly declines any interest in taking Beerus’s office 61 123.
  • God of Destruction Son Goku — An alternate Goku from a branch timeline, personally selected and taught by Beerus after the Tournament of Power. Combines destruction power with Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego 250.
  • Frieza — Beerus’s personally appointed representative, rather than a confirmed successor or candidate 19.

Succession and Linked Lives

A God of Destruction’s life is linked to the corresponding Supreme Kai’s. Killing the Supreme Kai can therefore remove the God of Destruction without overcoming the latter’s combat power 97.

In the devastated parallel world, Beerus disappears after the Supreme Kai dies during Trunks’s battle with Dabura. Whis states that all Gods of Destruction in that world have perished. Universe 6’s Champa likewise vanishes when Fuwa dies, leaving Vados waiting for a successor 88 97.

Whis initially considers the visiting Son Goku for Universe 7’s vacant position, then recruits Broly under the Grand Priest’s orders. Broly accepts candidacy and receives a candidate outfit before departing for training 61 96 97.

  • Candidates require training: Whis promises to guide Broly in the God of Destruction Realm 97.
  • Power alone does not establish suitability: Whis considers Gohan unsuited to the office despite his exceptional growth 151.
  • Incumbents can resist retirement: Champa refuses Vados’s suggestion that he appoint a successor, saying it is tens of millions of years too early 38.

Abilities & Skills

God of Destruction Power / Law of Destruction

God of Destruction Power is also called the Law of Destruction 214 234.

  • Erases targets without leaving a trace and can destroy both bodies and souls 233 248.
  • Removes Negative Energy, making it particularly effective against the Shadow Dragons 233 234.
  • Can penetrate an opponent’s divine defenses and damage the body internally 92.
  • Can reinforce physical attacks, form protective coatings, or be released as destructive light and energy spheres 30 37 183 218.

Destruction Techniques

  • Destruction Energy Spheres: Range from small projectiles to enormous attacks; Sidra compresses one to ping-pong-ball size 206.
  • Ultimate Destruction Sphere: Beerus’s finishing attack grows to the size of a star during his clash with Gogeta 46.
  • God of Destruction’s Wrath: Beerus releases Destruction Energy in multiple directions, canceling Goku’s 10x Kamehameha 30.
  • Mass bombardment: The Ultimate God of Destruction controls thousands of Destruction Energy Spheres simultaneously 215.
  • Sonic attack: The fused god inherits Rumsshi’s destructive roar, which affects bodies, souls, and concentration 216.

Growth Through Destructive Will

  • Beerus’s destructive power rises with his desire to destroy; his true power is described as capable of expanding without limit in this sense 40 41.
  • Rumsshi also grows stronger as his destructive desire intensifies 139 140.
  • This growth does not guarantee victory: Goku overcomes Rumsshi and later overwhelms the fused god 140 218.

Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct

  • Beerus possesses both techniques and initially stands above the other Gods of Destruction in their use 36.
  • Ultra Instinct is difficult even for gods to master. Beerus has not perfected it when Goku pursues Zamasu, but completes it during subsequent secluded training 130 183.
  • The alternate God of Destruction Goku combines Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego in his destruction form 250.

Limits

  • Destruction is not unbeatable: Strong opponents can neutralize, shatter, absorb, or overpower Destruction Energy 29 49 135 184.
  • Strength varies substantially: Beerus and Quitela stand far above holders such as Rumsshi and Mosco 36 208.
  • Linked lives remain a vulnerability: A holder can perish through the death of the Supreme Kai 97.
  • Higher beings can resist the law itself: The Great Evil God devours Goku’s Destruction Energy attacks without injury 248.

Realm and Regalia

  • God of Destruction Realm: A higher-dimensional residence containing a towering temple. Whis maintains Universe 7’s realm while Beerus sleeps 8.
  • Training grounds: Whis trains mortal visitors there, including Vegeta and Gohan; visiting the realm does not itself confer candidate status 123 124 151.
  • Divine garb: Beerus’s clothing is bestowed by Zeno and possesses extraordinary durability, although Goku’s Dragon Fist tears it apart 34.
  • Candidate outfit: Whis changes Broly into this clothing upon accepting him as Universe 7’s candidate 97.

Major Story Events

Beerus’s Awakening and the Challenge to Divine Invincibility

Beerus awakens after thirty-seven years, alarming the universe’s gods and signaling another purge. His search for the Super Saiyan God brings him into conflict with Vegeta, Goku, and eventually Gogeta 18 19 36.

The battle reveals the gap between Beerus and ordinary holders of the title. Goku’s attacks reach god-slaying strength, yet Beerus remains competitive against Gogeta’s higher forms. Their final clash shakes the Twelve Universes, and its aftermath leads to Goku acquiring destruction power and being swept into another space-time 31 34 45 50.

Mortals Surpass the Gods

The title’s reputation for invincibility is repeatedly challenged. Goku defeats Rumsshi, while Gohan overcomes Toppo’s God of Destruction transformation and destroys his final Destruction Sphere 140 183 184.

After winning the Tournament of Power, Goku challenges all twelve holders simultaneously. He swiftly defeats Sidra and withstands coordinated assaults from other gods, eventually reaching a level at which the twelve recognize that he could kill them with a casual strike 204 206 207 213.

The Ultimate God of Destruction

The twelve unite through Beerus as their vessel, creating Destruction. The fusion inherits their strengths, weaknesses, and special techniques, attaining an angel-level existence 214 216.

Goku overwhelms the fusion, but the Great Evil God intervenes before its defeat is finalized. Evil power repairs the fused body and turns it into a stronger, irrational puppet. Goku ultimately separates the evil origin from Destruction, restoring his consciousness but leaving him severely depleted 218 219 220 223.
