Background
Obito lost both parents when he was young; they had sacrificed their lives for the Uchiha Clan. His grandmother raised him until her death, two years before he met Koki. Afterward, he lived alone on the outskirts of the clan grounds, supported by a monthly clan allowance sufficient for food and clothing 21 34 35.
Despite frequently helping others, particularly the elderly, Obito experienced prejudice from villagers and ridicule at the Ninja Academy. His poor grades and unawakened Sharingan made him an easy target for classmates who expected every Uchiha to be gifted. Children within the clan did not play with him, but he distinguished their distance from the bullying he faced at school, emphasizing that clan elders continued to care for him 21 22 34 68.
Rin was initially his main source of encouragement. Returning each day to an empty house left him deeply lonely, making Koki and Shisui’s friendship especially meaningful 22.
Appearance
- Childhood clothing: A blue jacket with orange trim at the collar and cuffs, bearing the Uchiha crest 21.
- Distinctive accessories: Bright orange goggles and a forehead protector. Obito explains that he wore the goggles to protect his eyes while hoping to awaken the Sharingan 21 68.
- Hair: Initially recognizable by his spiky black hair; later described as short and neatly kept 21 210.
- After three years: Has a handsome face, high nose bridge, and sharply defined jawline. He no longer wears his goggles, retaining only Konoha’s forehead protector 210.
- Sharingan: Three spinning tomoe appear when his eyes awaken 144.
Personality
Obito is helpful, expressive, and determined to become Hokage, but his outward enthusiasm conceals considerable insecurity. Being dismissed as an incompetent Uchiha makes him question his own worth. Koki’s unqualified belief in his dream nearly brings him to tears because he has rarely received such firm support 21 23 68.
He is easily provoked by Kakashi and often answers perceived condescension with loud complaints. Nevertheless, his concern for Kakashi is genuine: when a joke leaves Kakashi visibly hurt, Obito feels remorse and wants to explain the misunderstanding 33 112.
With Koki, Obito becomes notably tender and attentive. While drunk, he is unusually clingy, tearful, and eager for reassurance. Later, his protectiveness develops into sustained discipline, although guilt over Koki’s injury continues to drive him years afterward 65 67 69 194 210.
Abilities & Skills
Three-Tomoe Sharingan
Obito awakens the Uchiha Clan’s ocular ability during the attack on Koki 144.
- His first documented awakening already possesses three tomoe; no earlier one- or two-tomoe stage is shown 144.
- The awakening is accompanied by intense emotional distress and chakra gathering in his eyes 144 145.
- Koki presents awakening the Sharingan as a prerequisite for the genjutsu instruction Obito requests from Shisui 82.
- Strong emotion can still bring out his Sharingan involuntarily after the three-year interval 212.
Ninja Training and Combat
Obito develops from an academically weak student into a recognized, battle-hardened shinobi 22 194 275.
- Early limitations: Struggles with academic subjects, ninjutsu, and the fundamentals of shuriken throwing 22 77.
- Training access: Practices alongside Koki, Shisui, and Itachi under Fugaku’s instruction 77.
- Improvement: Combines strenuous physical training with concentrated ninjutsu study, eventually graduating with excellent results 194.
- Battlefield conduct: Sends a distress signal and shields an exhausted Kakashi while facing stronger enemies 274.
- Endurance: Continues protecting Kakashi despite concealing a grave wound sustained against Yugito 277.
Genjutsu Interest
After watching Shisui defeat Koki with genjutsu, Obito asks to learn it so that he can protect others 82.
- Shisui agrees to teach him but warns that the training will be difficult 82.
- The conversation ends with the reminder that Obito has not yet awakened his Sharingan; these passages do not establish his later mastery of genjutsu 82.
Abilities Known from the Original Storyline
The following abilities appear in Koki’s knowledge of Obito’s original fate, rather than as documented advancements for the novel’s changed Obito.
- Kamui: Identified as Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan ability and regarded by Koki as exceptionally powerful. Its intangibility has a duration that Konan planned to outlast 23 68 316.
- Izanagi: Used by the original-story Obito to survive Konan’s six hundred billion explosive tags. His activation lasted ten minutes; the technique costs the sight of the Sharingan used to perform it 316.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Orange goggles — His childhood trademark, worn to protect his eyes; abandoned after his Sharingan awakening 68 210.
- Konoha forehead protector — Worn both in childhood and after his later transformation 21 210.
- Kunai and pouch — Carries a sharpened kunai at his waist and later uses a kunai while guarding Kakashi 144 274.
- Shuriken — Uses them during Fugaku’s basic weapons training 77.
Relationships
- Koki Uchiha — Close friend and central emotional support. Koki buys him dango, believes in his Hokage ambition, and draws him into a family environment. After Koki saves his life, Obito becomes intensely protective and trains to prevent a similar tragedy 22 23 57 143 194.
- Shisui Uchiha — Friend, fellow trainee, and an example Obito hopes to match. Shisui mediates his disputes with Kakashi and agrees to teach him genjutsu 33 78 82.
- Kakashi Hatake — Academy rival who becomes a trusted comrade. Their relationship moves from insults and jealousy toward a shared promise to grow stronger and protect Koki; Obito later shields the wounded Kakashi in battle 22 33 174 274.
- Rin Nohara — Early confidante and apparent childhood crush. Obito gradually recognizes that his feelings are closer to dependence and familial attachment, eventually stating plainly that he is not in love with her 22 68 99 212.
- Fugaku Uchiha — Clan leader, instructor, and supporter of his ambitions. Fugaku encourages him not to be discouraged by Shisui’s superior ability and explains that becoming Hokage requires wisdom and responsibility as well as strength 57 77 78.
- Mikoto Uchiha — Maternal figure who reassures him after Koki’s injury. Over the years, she comes to treat Obito and Kakashi as her own sons; Obito remains particularly obedient around her 35 150 210.
- Itachi Uchiha — Younger member of his household circle and fellow participant in Fugaku’s training 23 77.
- Madara Uchiha — A hidden manipulator who selects Obito as a potential agent of Infinite Tsukuyomi, believing his kindness would produce especially deep despair if corrupted 253.
- Black Zetsu — Secret observer who interferes during Obito’s emotional collapse. Koki’s ability to restore Obito’s tenderness makes him question whether Obito can be fully controlled 145.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Koki and Finding a Family
Obito meets Koki and Shisui outside a three-color dango shop after several disappointments. He had bought roses to confess to Rin, only to find her apparently spending time with Kakashi. On the way home, another Academy student mocked his dream of becoming Hokage. With no money left for dango, he was overwhelmed when the two younger Uchiha approached him kindly 21 22 23.
Koki offers him food, affirms his ambition, and invites him home to meet Itachi. His motives include both genuine sympathy and the hope of preventing Obito’s original descent into darkness 22 23.
As Obito becomes part of the household, he experiences the family warmth he has lacked since his grandmother’s death. During a gathering, he proudly declares his Hokage ambition and receives encouragement from Koki and Fugaku. He comes to understand that he is no longer a lonely orphan without anyone to support him 35 57 58 59.
Reconsidering His Feelings for Rin
Obito initially interprets Rin’s kindness as romantic love. In a private conversation with Koki, however, he wonders whether she sees him as a teammate or younger brother, and whether his own attachment resembles family affection 68.
His doubts deepen as he recognizes that Rin’s feelings for Kakashi differ from her concern for him. Meanwhile, Koki continues arranging what he believes will be Obito’s confession. Obito becomes increasingly reluctant, and when Koki accidentally interrupts the meeting, he steps in to take responsibility and shield Koki from embarrassment 99 122 130 132 133.
After the three-year interval, Obito explicitly tells Koki that he is not in love with Rin. He even argues that Rin and Kakashi would make a suitable couple 212.
Root Attack and Sharingan Awakening
After Koki disappears, Obito searches for him with mounting alarm. He eventually holds the injured Koki in his arms, unaware that a wounded Root operative is preparing a final attack against his back 140 143.
Koki detects the danger and saves him, suffering a blade wound in the process. Obito’s fear and fury erupt: he repeatedly stabs the attacker’s corpse while carefully shielding Koki from the blood. His Sharingan awakens directly with three tomoe 143 144.
Black Zetsu secretly exploits the crisis by activating a mysterious power within Obito, encouraging his frenzy. The attempt fails to keep him consumed by hatred: feeling Koki’s faint breathing brings him back to himself. Obito carries Koki toward safety, transfers him into Kakashi’s arms when they meet, and collapses from exhaustion 145.
Guilt, Reconciliation, and Transformation
Obito blames himself for Koki’s injury despite Mikoto’s reassurance. His distress worsens when Kakashi treats him coldly, while Shisui also struggles with resentment over Koki having been hurt to save him 150 157.
After Koki wakes, Kakashi apologizes for directing his anger at Obito. The two exchange a fist bump and promise to become stronger together so they can protect Koki 174.
Koki’s scar becomes a lasting reminder of Obito’s helplessness. He begins rising before everyone else to train and studying ninjutsu late into the night. His grades improve dramatically, followed by graduation, promotion to Chunin, and a growing reputation throughout Konoha. Three years later, Mikoto recognizes his maturity but also sees that he remains haunted by the incident 194 210.
Disrupting Madara’s Expectations
Madara had considered Obito’s kindness an ideal foundation for manipulation: once driven into despair, he expected Obito to embrace Infinite Tsukuyomi. White Zetsu’s report of Obito’s changes instead leaves Madara doubtful about his suitability. Seeking to redirect Madara’s attention, White Zetsu proposes Koki as a better candidate 253.
Koki nevertheless continues worrying about the original Kannabi Bridge tragedy. Later reports confirm that the bridge has been destroyed and Rin is safe, rather than reproducing the disaster Koki remembers 233 329.
Battle Against Yugito
Obito and Kakashi are overwhelmed by three powerful enemies, including the Two-Tails jinchūriki, Yugito. With Kakashi nearly out of chakra, Obito sends a distress signal and positions himself between his companion and the threat 274.
Kakashi subsequently discovers that Obito has been hiding a severe wound. Despite their exhaustion, Obito insists that they cannot place all their hopes in rescue and must continue trying to survive through their own efforts 277.
